If a shark appears during an Arctic dive, stop chasing your objective, stay calm, keep the animal in view, remain with your group and follow the dive leader’s pre-agreed instructions. Do not touch, pursue, block or feed it. Your safest exit is the one established in the site briefing, because species, visibility, currents, rescue resources and ascent procedures differ widely across the Arctic.
Preparation matters more in polar water than improvised reactions. Confirm the likely species, visibility, cold-water hazards, dive-termination triggers and emergency arrangements before entering. Greenland sharks are the best-known large-shark example for Greenland diving, but “Arctic waters” covers many regions and local plans always take precedence over general advice.
What to do the moment you see a shark
A calm, coordinated response protects both divers and the animal. Use this sequence unless your dive leader has briefed a different, site-specific procedure.
- Pause and control your breathing. Avoid frantic finning, rapid turns or a sudden bolt for the surface. SHARKPROJECT’s diver guidance emphasizes composure and avoiding hectic movement.
- Keep the shark in view. Track its position without swimming toward it. Maintain awareness of the three-dimensional space around you, including your buddy, the rest of the team, the bottom, overhead ice or rock and your ascent route.
- Stay with the group. Signal the dive leader and your buddy using the hand signals agreed during the briefing. Do not split off to obtain a closer look or a better photograph.
- Make no contact and do not interfere. Do not touch, grab, chase, block, harass, feed or deliberately attract the shark. A large animal that appears slow may still change direction or depth faster than a diver can react.
- Follow the agreed termination plan. The leader may direct the group to hold position, move away, begin the planned ascent or leave by another route. There is no single ascent or exit maneuver that fits every Arctic site, so use the procedure you were given rather than inventing one underwater.
- Keep cameras secondary. If you are filming, stop recording when it competes with monitoring the shark, your instruments or the group. A camera is never a reason to delay an instructed exit.
Do not interpret a shark swimming away as permission to follow it. Once the encounter has ended, continue according to the leader’s plan and report what happened during the post-dive debrief.

What you may encounter in Greenland and the wider Arctic
Greenland sharks
Greenland sharks occur in Arctic waters and are the central shark example for Greenland-focused diving. The Institute of Marine Research’s Greenland shark species page, originally published in 2018 and updated 25 August 2026, lists a maximum length of 7 metres. Their size can make an encounter feel intimidating even when the animal is not approaching you.
“There are no known harmful interactions with humans, including from divers who have observed these animals under water.”
This is the Institute of Marine Research’s wording and its qualification matters: known interactions are not the same as a guarantee that every encounter is risk-free. The available sources do not establish an encounter or attack probability for Arctic divers, so no numerical risk estimate should be assumed.

Why identification still matters
Arctic geography includes Greenland, northern Canada, Norway, Russia, Icelandic waters and other areas with different species, regulations and operating practices. Ask the operator which sharks are plausible at the specific site. A plan designed around a Greenland shark may not cover a different species, a seal-rich area or a location where ice, kelp, current or overhead terrain changes the exit options.

Brief the dive before you enter
Ask for precise answers, not a general assurance that the site is safe. Write the plan on a slate or repeat it back if conditions are complex.
- Species and behavior: Which sharks have been recorded here, at what depth and season, and what behavior should trigger a retreat?
- Conditions: What visibility, current, temperature, ice exposure and bottom or overhead hazards are expected today?
- Group control: Who leads, who stays at the rear, how far apart should buddies remain, and what signal means “shark” or “end the dive”?
- Termination criteria: At what visibility, current strength, gas reserve, equipment problem or animal behavior does the team leave?
- Exit route: Will the group ascend where it is, move to a fixed line, return to a boat pickup point or use another route? How will the leader account for every diver?
- Emergency measures: What happens after a separation, lost mask, regulator problem, entanglement, injury, uncontrolled ascent or missed boat pickup?
- Communications: Which hand, light, line or surface signals work in the expected visibility, and who has authority to abort?
- Photography rules: Where may cameras be used, and when must they be clipped away?
Confirm that your own training and recent experience match the plan. If you cannot comfortably manage buoyancy, navigation, dry-suit procedures or a controlled ascent in the expected conditions, do not rely on a shark briefing to compensate.
Cold, darkness and visibility change the problem
Greenland diving is demanding cold-water diving. DAN describes subzero temperatures, generally clear visibility and June through September as the best diving period, while noting that some fjords remain accessible in winter. “Usually clear” is not a promise for a particular day: wind, plankton, sediment, snowfall, darkness and local geography can reduce the view rapidly.
The Canadian Shark Attack Registry advises against diving in less than six metres of visibility where Greenland sharks or other large mobile sharks may be present. The registry presents this as a recommendation, not a universal regulation. Its stated concern is that reduced visibility cuts reaction time and raises the chance of a surprise encounter, collision, disorientation or uncontrolled ascent.

| Planning question | Why it matters in Arctic water | What to confirm with the operator |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | A large animal may appear only when it is close, and visual contact with buddies can be lost at the same time. | Today’s measured or expected visibility, the minimum accepted for the dive and the abort threshold. |
| Temperature and exposure | Cold can impair dexterity, breathing comfort, buoyancy control and decision-making. | Water and surface temperatures, exposure protection, maximum bottom time and warming procedures. |
| Season and light | Winter access may involve limited daylight, ice or more difficult logistics even when a fjord is technically diveable. | Daylight window, ice status, weather limits and the boat or shore team’s operating hours. |
| Rescue capability | Remote sites can have long delays before medical care or evacuation. | Nearest suitable medical facility, evacuation method, communications coverage and who coordinates an emergency. |
If actual visibility falls below the briefing limit, end the dive as planned. Do not stay merely because the water looked clear at entry.
Never turn the encounter into an interaction
Non-interference is both a safety rule and a wildlife-welfare rule. Canada’s 2025 COSEWIC assessment describes previous diver harassment at a Quebec congregation site: divers grabbed tail fins and blocked sharks’ paths. The assessment says this disturbed natural movement and behavior and imposed stress and energy costs that can affect essential activities. That site is in Quebec rather than an Arctic dive location, but the lesson applies wherever divers meet a Greenland shark or another large mobile shark.
Blocking a route, cornering an animal against ice or rock, shining lights into its face, touching it for a photograph or repeatedly pursuing it can change its behavior. Give the shark room to choose its direction. If the animal turns toward the team, hold the group together, keep it in view and follow the leader’s planned movement rather than trying to steer or physically repel it.

General advice cannot replace a local procedure. Arctic sites differ in depth, current, overhead hazards, surface support and the possibility of a rapid boat pickup. The leader’s briefing should define how the team leaves and how divers are counted.

If the shark passes and the group remains together
Maintain the instructed position, monitor gas and instruments, and leave on the planned route when directed. Do not extend the dive because the encounter was uneventful.
If the shark remains nearby or approaches repeatedly
Signal the leader, keep buddies close and follow the pre-agreed termination trigger. Avoid rapid, uncoordinated movement; the leader may choose to move the group, hold briefly or begin the ascent depending on the site.
If a diver becomes separated
Use the lost-buddy procedure from the briefing rather than searching independently. The remaining team should stay under the leader’s control, while surface personnel follow the operator’s missing-diver protocol.
If visibility collapses or equipment fails
Prioritize breathing, buoyancy and contact with the team. Signal the problem, follow the emergency ascent or exit method you practiced and do not attempt to film or approach the shark. A sudden loss of visibility is a reason to apply the dive plan, not to improvise a pursuit or sprint.

After surfacing
Account for every diver, manage cold exposure and report injuries, equipment problems, unusual animal behavior or a missed separation procedure to the operator. Ask how the encounter should be logged or reported locally; there is no single reporting protocol for every Arctic jurisdiction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a site and operator
There is no defensible ranking of Arctic operators from the available evidence. Compare the planning factors that determine whether a team can respond coherently.
| Factor | Questions to ask before booking |
|---|---|
| Wildlife briefing | Does the guide explain likely species, non-interference rules, encounter signals and photography limits? |
| Cold-water competence | What minimum dry-suit, cold-water, depth and recent-diving experience is required? |
| Visibility policy | Is there a published minimum visibility and a clear cancellation or termination decision? |
| Emergency support | What communications, first aid, evacuation and medical coordination are available at this site? |
| Group management | How are buddies assigned, divers counted and separated divers handled? |
| Seasonal logistics | How do daylight, ice, weather and winter access affect the schedule and exit plan? |
Ask for the briefing before paying or traveling if possible. Conditions and services vary by site and season, so verify current arrangements directly with the operator.

Training, insurance and local rules
DAN says Greenland is not a place for divers who are not seasoned cold-water divers. Build experience progressively in cold water, dry-suit buoyancy, low-temperature equipment management, navigation and limited-visibility procedures before attempting a remote Arctic itinerary.
DAN also recommends dive-accident insurance that covers medical evacuation for Greenland diving. Confirm that the policy applies to the depth, remoteness, activities and country involved; availability and terms vary, and no particular program is established here as a universal recommendation.
Professional diving may be subject to additional national requirements. The Danish Maritime Authority lists special requirements involving equipment, training and medical examinations for professional diving in Greenland. Recreational divers should confirm which local rules apply to their activity with the operator and relevant authorities.
A compact pre-dive checklist
- Species likely at this site and how the team will behave around them.
- Expected visibility and the minimum value that ends the dive.
- Buddy positions, leader authority and shark or abort signals.
- Exact termination route, ascent method and surface pickup arrangement.
- Lost-buddy, equipment-failure, injury and uncontrolled-ascent procedures.
- Cold exposure limits, warming plan and emergency medical support.
- Camera rules that keep observation and team control first.
- Personal training, medical fitness and evacuation insurance suitable for the itinerary.
The practical rule is simple: remain calm, maintain visual awareness, stay with your divers, do not interfere with the shark and execute the plan agreed for that site. In Arctic water, disciplined preparation is more valuable than any gadget or improvised maneuver.
