If you see a mountain lion near your home, do not run toward it or away from it. Face the animal, stay upright, make yourself look larger, and leave it a clear route to retreat. Keep children close and secure pets; if the lion attacks, fight back and try to remain standing. Once everyone is safe, report the sighting to the wildlife agency or park authority responsible for your area.
What to do during an encounter
A mountain lion may be passing through rather than seeking contact. Give it room to leave instead of approaching, cornering, or trying to drive it toward another person or animal. Do not move closer for a photograph. If you are near a doorway or vehicle and can get inside without approaching the animal or turning your back, do so calmly. Otherwise, hold your position and give the lion space.
Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation, according to the National Park Service and Rocky Mountain National Park guidance. That is a reason to avoid crowding the animal, not a reason to assume it is harmless or to wait for it to come closer. Do not block the route it could use to leave. The same basic response applies whether you spot it in the yard, near a path, or at the edge of the property: stay upright, keep it in view, and avoid sudden movement.

- Make yourself appear larger. Raise your arms or open your jacket. Wave your arms slowly, and speak firmly and loudly so the animal can recognize you as a person.
- Keep an escape route open. Do not surround the lion, block its path, or move toward it. If you need to retreat, do so slowly while continuing to face it.
- Keep children close. Tell them to stay still and near you rather than run. Pick up a small child if you can do so without bending over or turning away; the aim is to prevent the child from panicking and running.
- Respond more forcefully if it advances or acts aggressively. Shout and throw rocks, sticks, or other available objects while facing the animal. Do not crouch to pick something up if doing so would put you in a vulnerable position.
These actions are consistent across guidance from the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and California wildlife officials. The central distinction is between giving a lion space to leave and allowing it to approach without resistance: stay facing it, appear large, and escalate your response if it comes closer or behaves aggressively.

Keep children within arm’s reach rather than allowing them to scatter or run ahead. If you need to pick up a small child, do it only if you can stay facing the lion and avoid bending over. The guidance is not to put a child down and turn away to reach them; instead, prevent panic and keep the child close while maintaining your stance.
There is no need to approach the animal to determine exactly how far away it is. The National Park Service’s Rocky Mountain National Park recommends keeping 120 feet from wildlife, but that is park-specific guidance, not a universal residential minimum. At home, prioritize space and a clear escape route rather than trying to measure a distance.
If the lion attacks
Fight back with whatever is available and try to remain on your feet and face the animal. Do not play dead. The National Park Service notes that people have used rocks, sticks, jackets, garden tools, and bare hands. Use what you can reach, protect yourself, and keep resisting rather than giving up your position.

The practical difference between an animal that is moving away and one that is advancing matters: if it moves closer or acts aggressively, make noise and use available objects to defend yourself while continuing to face it. Do not run or turn away to get an object. If something is already within reach, use it; otherwise, do not put yourself in a vulnerable posture trying to retrieve it.
If another person is with you, they should help without running away or turning their back. Once the animal withdraws and you can move safely, get to a secure place and contact emergency services if anyone is injured. Then notify the wildlife agency or park authority that handles reports in your area.
Protect children and pets around the property
Children should be supervised outdoors, particularly around dawn and dusk, and should not run ahead of adults. Explain in advance that if they see a mountain lion, they should stay close, avoid running, and follow an adult’s directions. During an actual sighting, gather children calmly and keep them within arm’s reach.

These precautions address both the immediate encounter and ordinary time outside. A child who is playing in the yard should remain supervised, especially at dawn and dusk, and adults should keep children from running ahead on walks. If a lion is seen, the goal is to keep children together and prevent sudden running while the adult stays upright and faces the animal.
Bring pets indoors at night when possible. If pets or livestock must remain outside, use a sturdy, secure shelter; Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks advises a kennel with a secure top for pets. Do not leave pets unattended outdoors at night. Do not feed pets outside: leftover food can attract smaller animals, which may in turn attract a predator. Secure livestock and large outdoor pets in covered shelters at night.
For a pet that must be outside, the choice is not simply indoor versus outdoor: bringing it inside removes its exposure outside, while a sturdy, covered, secure enclosure is the recommended alternative when it must remain outdoors. A kennel without a secure top does not match Montana’s specific advice. Keep pet food indoors rather than leaving it out where smaller animals may find it.
If a pet or livestock animal is missing, injured, or killed, do not approach a carcass. A mountain lion may return to feed. Keep people and pets away, and report the loss or suspected attack to the responsible local wildlife agency. California Department of Fish and Wildlife specifically asks property owners to report potential or actual mountain-lion depredation, including losses involving pets or livestock.
Reduce conditions that can draw lions close
Home precautions address different potential contributors to conflict; none guarantees that a mountain lion will stay away. California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks recommend practical steps focused on visibility, hiding cover, prey attractants, and animal security.
| Concern | Practical step | What the step does—and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dark approaches | Install outdoor lighting around the home perimeter. An outdoor motion-sensor light is one way to implement the general lighting recommendation. | Lighting can make it harder for an animal to approach unseen. The agencies do not claim that a particular light prevents encounters or endorse a specific product. |
| Hiding cover | Remove or thin dense or low vegetation, especially near children’s play areas and places where people routinely gather. | This reduces concealed spots near the house; it is not a guarantee that a lion will not enter the property. |
| Prey and food attractants | Do not feed deer. Keep pet food indoors and avoid leaving food outside that may draw smaller prey animals. | These steps reduce food-related attractants. They do not establish that every sighting is caused by food or deer. |
| Outdoor animals | Bring pets inside at night or use a secure kennel with a top. Keep livestock and large outdoor pets in sturdy covered shelters. | Secure shelter protects animals by limiting exposure; it cannot make an outdoor enclosure a guarantee against an encounter. |
| Possible feeding site | Stay away from animal carcasses and keep people and pets away from them. | A lion may return to feed, so a carcass should not be treated as safe to inspect or remove yourself. |
Think of the measures as addressing separate problems rather than as competing products or one complete solution. Lighting addresses visibility; vegetation management addresses concealed cover; avoiding deer feeding and outdoor pet food addresses potential prey attractants; and secure shelters address the exposure of pets and livestock. The guidance does not rank these measures by effectiveness or promise that any one of them will prevent an encounter.

Keep the home perimeter lit and pay particular attention to children’s play spaces. The point of these measures is to make the immediate surroundings less inviting or less concealed and to reduce the chance that a pet is left exposed—not to create a promise of safety.
Do not feed deer, and avoid animal carcasses rather than treating them as something to inspect or remove. The National Park Service notes that lions may return to feed. Keep people and pets away from a carcass and report the situation to the appropriate local authority if needed. Likewise, clearing dense or low vegetation near a play area is a targeted way to reduce hiding cover there; it does not mean every part of a property must be cleared.
Report the sighting to the right local authority
After reaching a safe place, report the sighting to the wildlife agency or park authority responsible for the location. Follow that agency’s current instructions, since reporting routes and responses vary by jurisdiction. If the encounter occurred in a park, contact a ranger or the park authority. If it occurred at home, use your state or local wildlife agency’s reporting channel.

Provide the location, time, direction the animal traveled, and a brief description of what happened. Report whether the lion approached people, appeared injured, remained nearby, or was associated with an injured or missing pet or livestock. Do not follow it to obtain more information, and do not approach a carcass. If someone is in immediate danger or injured, contact emergency services first.
Contact details are jurisdiction-specific. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service page cited for mountain-lion safety lists contacts for its California service area; those numbers should not be used as a general contact list for other states. Verify the correct authority for your location rather than assuming a federal or neighboring-state contact handles residential sightings.
If a pet or livestock animal has been lost, include that information when you contact the responsible agency. California Department of Fish and Wildlife asks property owners to report potential as well as actual mountain-lion depredation, including pet and livestock losses. Reporting rules and contact paths differ by location, so use the current local instructions instead of relying on a number published for another state or service area.

How to interpret the risk
A sighting is a reason to use caution and report the animal, but it does not by itself establish that an attack is imminent. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says, “Few sightings result in a mountain lion being identified as an imminent threat to public safety.” Treat that as an agency statement about California, not a guarantee about an individual encounter or a substitute for following safety guidance.
The same department reports fewer than 50 verified mountain-lion attacks on humans in California since 1890, including six fatal incidents. This is a California-specific cumulative figure, not a national count; it should not be used to estimate risk for a particular home, location, or encounter. Whatever the overall frequency, the useful response in the moment remains the same: do not run or approach, protect children, give the animal room to leave, and report the incident after reaching safety.
The figure is useful context, not a prediction. It covers verified attacks in California over a period beginning in 1890 and says nothing by itself about the risk at a particular address or the behavior of the lion in front of you. Keep the distinction clear: sightings are not automatically imminent threats, but a person should still use the recommended response during an encounter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distance guidance depends on where you are
Rocky Mountain National Park’s wildlife guidance recommends keeping 120 feet from wildlife. That figure is specific to the park’s guidance and should not be treated as a universal residential rule. At home, do not approach a lion to measure or maintain a particular distance; create space, keep an exit route open, and follow the instructions of your local wildlife agency.
