If you downloaded a purported GTA 6 build or another suspicious game file, don’t open or run it. If it has already run, stop interacting with it, update Microsoft Defender, and scan your Windows PC. A scan can help detect malware, but it cannot prove that a file is an authentic or safe GTA 6 build.

If you downloaded the file but haven’t opened it

  1. Don’t open or execute it. Avoid installer prompts and any instructions to bypass Windows security warnings or disable antivirus protection.
  2. Remove the download. Use your browser’s downloads list to locate and delete it, or delete it with File Explorer. If you can’t identify which file it is, don’t open files to check; use the download list or ask someone you trust for help.
  3. Run an updated security scan if you want to check the device. On Windows, update Microsoft Defender’s security intelligence, then run a scan. Microsoft recommends downloading software only from trusted sources and keeping security protection current. Microsoft’s guidance on protecting your PC explains these precautions.

A download that was never opened is a different exposure from software that was run. Still, don’t treat deletion or a clean scan as proof that the file was safe or genuine. Don’t upload a potentially sensitive file to an unknown scanning website.

If you opened or ran the file

Stop interacting with the file and don’t follow prompts asking you to disable antivirus, install additional programs, or bypass Windows warnings. A game installer downloaded from an unverified source may be bundled with unwanted or malicious software; Microsoft describes common ways malware can reach a PC, including third-party downloads.

Update Defender and run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection, then choose Protection updates or Check for updates and install available security intelligence updates. Labels can vary slightly by Windows version.
  3. Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and select Scan now.
  4. If Defender reports a threat, follow the action it recommends, such as quarantine or removal. Some detections require you to take an action in Windows Security.

Microsoft’s malware detection and removal guidance covers updating protection, scanning, and responding to recurring detections.

Use Defender Offline if malware persists or returns

If a detection keeps returning or you suspect malware remains after removal, run Microsoft Defender Offline. It scans outside the usual Windows environment, which can help with threats that are difficult to remove while Windows is running. Save open work first: the scan restarts your PC. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and select Scan now. Microsoft calls it the most complete scan option, but no scan guarantees that a device is threat-free. See Microsoft’s scan instructions.

If the threat is detected again or symptoms continue

  • Follow the security product’s quarantine or removal instructions rather than reopening the installer or trying its suggested fixes.
  • If the same malware is detected again after removal, it may be hiding or reinstalling. Microsoft recommends Defender Offline for recurring malware.
  • Don’t use a clean scan as a guarantee that no threat remains, and don’t use scan results to authenticate the purported game build.
  • If you’re unsure how to respond to a detection or the problem continues, get help from a trusted IT professional or Microsoft support.

If malware damaged files or the PC remains compromised

Microsoft says that if malware made irreversible changes, you may need to reset or reinstall Windows. If you restore personal files, use a backup made before the infection and, where possible, stored externally. A backup left on the infected PC may also have been changed; an external drive is a backup destination, not a way to disinfect the computer. Follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance for malware problems.

What a scan can—and can’t—tell you

Microsoft’s security guidance explains how to reduce malware risk and scan a device; it does not verify any specific GTA 6 file. A security product’s result concerns detected threats, not whether a purported build is authentic, complete, or safe to run. Treat the file as unverified unless an authoritative source establishes otherwise.

The detailed recovery steps above apply to Windows. Microsoft also provides Defender scan instructions for macOS and Android, but scan options and recovery steps differ by operating system.
