Act according to what happened, not what the scam promised. A file that was downloaded but never opened calls for safe deletion. A file that ran requires device isolation and malware scanning. A wallet connection requires permission checks, while a signed transfer, token approval, or exposed recovery phrase can require moving your remaining assets to a new wallet. Do not revisit the download page, enter a recovery phrase, or pay anyone who promises guaranteed recovery.

The incident analyzed by Malwarebytes in September 2026 involved two separate exposure paths: fake GTA 6 pages delivering an infostealer and wallet code requesting transfers or ongoing permissions. Merely connecting a wallet is not proof that funds moved, and disconnecting a site does not revoke permissions already recorded on a blockchain.

First, identify your branch

Use this table before taking action. If more than one row applies, complete all applicable branches, starting with device containment and then wallet protection.

What happened Do this now Why it matters
Downloaded a build, never opened it Do not run it. Delete it with normal operating-system controls and avoid the download page. A downloaded file is a precautionary risk; execution is the point at which malware can operate.
Opened or installed the file Disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, scan with legitimate security software, and seek trusted professional help if needed. An infostealer or other malware may be active and may have exposed local accounts or other devices on the same network.
Entered a password or other account credential From a clean device, change that password and every reused password. Check sign-ins, email changes, and connected apps. Malware or a fake login page may have captured the credential.
Connected a wallet but did not sign anything Review permissions on every chain you used, revoke anything unfamiliar, then disconnect the site. Connection and permission are different states; a connection alone does not authorize a transfer.
Signed a transfer or token/NFT approval Revoke active permissions immediately. If assets already left, move remaining assets to a newly created wallet. A signed approval can permit immediate or later movement, and a completed blockchain transfer cannot be reversed.
Entered a recovery phrase Treat the wallet as compromised and move remaining assets to a new wallet. Never reuse that phrase. Anyone with the phrase can control the wallet, regardless of whether the site visibly requested a transfer.

I downloaded a fake GTA 6 build but did not run it

Do not open or inspect the executable

Do not double-click the file, run it in a “test” environment, or upload it to a random online scanner. Leave the download page and do not return to it to seek an activation key, patch, crack, or “fix.” A fake game installer can be renamed, bundled with another program, or replaced after a page reload.

Delete it using trusted system controls

  1. Close the browser tab that offered the download.
  2. Open your operating system’s normal Downloads folder and delete the file.
  3. Empty the system trash or recycle bin.
  4. Check the browser’s download history and remove the entry if it contains a link that could be revisited accidentally.

This is precautionary handling. The incident sources do not establish a special remediation procedure for a file that was downloaded but never opened, so do not claim that deletion proves the computer is clean. If you entered credentials on the page, follow the credential branch below even though the file was never executed.

I ran the fake build: contain the computer first

Cut the network connection

Immediately turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet on the affected computer. Do not use it to sign in to email, banking, a game account, or a wallet until it has been checked. The Federal Trade Commission’s September 2025 cybersecurity guidance recommends disconnecting an infected device from its network to limit further activity.

If the computer shared a home or work network, check other devices for unusual pop-ups, new programs, disabled security tools, unexpected browser extensions, or unexplained account alerts. Containment reduces opportunities for malware to spread, but it does not identify every affected device.

Scan with legitimate security software

  1. Use a trusted security product already installed on the computer, or obtain legitimate security software through a clean device and the vendor’s genuine channel.
  2. Run a full scan, not only a quick scan, and allow the software to quarantine or remove detections.
  3. Install security and operating-system updates after the device is isolated, following the software’s normal update process.
  4. If the scan reports a serious infection, security tools are disabled, or you cannot trust the result, contact a reputable security professional. Do not let the suspected computer reconnect merely to ask an unknown “support” account for help.

A completed scan is not a guarantee that every compromise has been found. If the device held sensitive accounts or business data, preserve useful alerts and consult a qualified incident-response professional before restoring normal use.

Change credentials from a clean device

On a different, trusted device, change passwords that were typed on the affected computer and any password reused elsewhere. Start with email, password-manager access, financial accounts, game accounts, and the account used for your wallet. Turn on two-step verification where available, review active sessions, and remove unfamiliar recovery email addresses, phone numbers, app passwords, and third-party connections.

Rockstar Games Customer Support’s account-security guidance, last updated February 17, 2026, states: “Don’t download software from third-party sources, including cracked games.” It also recommends unique credentials, 2-Step Verification, current software, and reporting suspicious activity to support.

If you typed credentials into the leak site

A fake download page can steal information even when its file is never opened. From a clean device, change the exposed password and every account that used the same password. Do not change passwords from a computer that may still be infected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the account for takeover signs

  • Unknown sign-ins, devices, or locations.
  • Password-reset emails you did not request.
  • Changed email addresses, phone numbers, recovery codes, or 2-Step Verification methods.
  • New forwarding rules in email.
  • Unrecognized connected applications or social accounts.
  • Messages, purchases, trades, or profile changes you did not make.

Sign out other sessions, remove unknown connections, and contact the service through its published support channel. Keep the alert emails and timestamps; they can help the provider investigate. If the same credential protected a wallet service, exchange, or financial account, treat that service as exposed too.

I connected a wallet to a GTA 6 leak site: can they take my crypto?

Connection is not the same as authorization

A wallet connection lets a site see a public address and request actions. It does not, by itself, prove that a transfer occurred. The asset risk arises when you approve a transaction, grant a token or NFT allowance, or reveal the recovery phrase.

In Malwarebytes’ analysis of one fake GTA 6 site published September 1, 2026, the examined code did not request or expose the recovery phrase. Instead, the page used malicious transaction and permission requests. One path was prepared to transfer nearly the whole Solana balance; a separate script could request transfers or continuing permissions across Ethereum, Polygon, BNB Smart Chain, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Base, and Fantom. Those are findings about that investigated page, not a description of every leak site.

Check and revoke permissions on every chain

  1. Open the wallet’s security, connected-sites, or permissions view and identify the suspicious domain.
  2. Use a reputable, third-party token allowance checker for each chain you used. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) advises: “Periodically use a third-party token allowance checker to help you see which sites or apps you have inadvertently permitted to access funds in your wallet and revoke those permissions.”
  3. Revoke unfamiliar ERC-20, NFT, or other token allowances. A revocation is an on-chain transaction and may require network fees.
  4. Repeat the check for every network and asset type involved; a revocation on one chain does not clear a permission on another.
  5. After revoking, remove the suspicious site from the wallet’s connected-sites list.

Disconnecting ends the wallet-to-site connection. It does not cancel permissions already granted on-chain, which is why revocation must come first.

Inspect balances and activity

Review token and NFT balances, outgoing transfers, approvals, and recent transactions on every chain you used. Compare the destination addresses and times with your own activity. Save transaction hashes, the site address, screenshots, and wallet alerts before closing them. If you see an unfamiliar approval but no transfer, revoke it immediately; a continuing allowance can be used later.

If you signed a transfer or approval

Separate a completed transfer from a standing permission

A one-time transfer moves assets in the transaction you signed. A token or NFT approval can authorize a contract or site to move eligible assets later, sometimes repeatedly, until the allowance is revoked or exhausted. Review the transaction details and revoke every active permission you do not recognize.

Move what remains if assets left the wallet

If a completed transfer sent funds to an unknown address, treat those assets as stolen. Blockchain transfers are generally final and cannot be reversed by a wallet provider. Create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase on a trusted, uncompromised device and move remaining assets there. Do not send more funds to the old address merely to “unlock” or “recover” what was taken.

Do not reveal the recovery phrase or private key to a website, a chat account, or a person claiming to be wallet support. A genuine support channel will not need your secret phrase to inspect a public transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you entered your recovery phrase

Assume the wallet is fully compromised, even if the page’s visible code did not ask for it. Create a new wallet and transfer remaining assets as soon as safely possible, prioritizing assets that could be moved by an attacker. Never reuse the exposed phrase for the new wallet or for another account.

After moving assets, revoke permissions associated with the old wallet and monitor its addresses. Keep the old wallet’s public addresses and transaction history for reporting, but do not continue using it as a savings wallet.

Report the scam and preserve evidence

What to save

  • The complete site address and any redirect addresses.
  • Wallet addresses that received funds.
  • Transaction hashes, chain names, token or NFT identifiers, and timestamps.
  • Browser download records, file names, security alerts, and account-notification emails.
  • Screenshots of the page, permission request, and transaction details, if safely available.

Where to report

Report the receiving address and suspicious domain to your wallet provider and a public scam-reporting service. The FBI IC3 specifically requests reports about suspicious crypto-gaming activity. For malware and other fraud, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reports cannot guarantee recovery, but they preserve intelligence that may connect related victims and addresses.

Ignore paid recovery promises

Malwarebytes warns that recovery-fee offers frequently become a second scam. Anyone demanding cryptocurrency, gift cards, remote access, or your recovery phrase to “unlock” or retrieve stolen funds is asking for another opportunity to take money. A wallet provider cannot reverse a settled on-chain transfer.

How to recognize the fake-release setup

Rockstar’s official support information, last updated August 18, 2026, lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and describes digital and physical editions. The physical package contains a download code rather than a disc. The page identifies November 19, 2026 as the planned launch date and November 12, 2026 as the planned preload date in its regional information. Release dates, platforms, and package details can change, so verify them on Rockstar-authorized stores and retailers close to publication or purchase.

A playable “leak” offered before that release, especially outside an authorized channel, is a serious warning sign. In the investigated scam, genuine-looking game information was mixed with contradictory claims, an unauthorized leaked-copy offer, a cryptocurrency payment option, and a wallet-connection prompt. Rockstar does not ask buyers to connect a crypto wallet or send cryptocurrency to obtain the game.

Safer buying and downloading rules

  • Use Rockstar-authorized stores and retailers listed in current official support information.
  • Reject cracked, leaked, early, or “pre-release” executables from file hosts, social posts, and unofficial launchers.
  • Do not disable security software to make an installer run.
  • Do not connect a wallet to claim a game, verify ownership, receive a download code, or unlock a supposed beta.
  • Keep the operating system, browser, and security software updated, and use unique passwords with 2-Step Verification.

After the emergency: monitor for delayed damage

For several weeks, watch email, game, financial, exchange, and wallet activity for unfamiliar logins, password resets, approvals, transfers, or new browser extensions. Keep notifications enabled. If the infected computer was used for work, banking, or identity documents, notify the relevant organization and follow its incident procedure.

Separate the three kinds of evidence when explaining the incident to support: whether a file executed, whether credentials were entered, and whether a wallet transaction or permission was signed. That distinction helps responders choose device remediation, account protection, or on-chain revocation instead of treating every wallet connection as an asset transfer.
