Stop digging or construction in the immediate area, leave the object where it is, and do not clean or handle it unnecessarily. Photograph the find in place, note its exact location and context, then contact the heritage or archaeology authority responsible for your property. Wait for that authority’s instructions before moving the object or resuming work. A find on private land does not by itself determine who owns it, whether reporting is mandatory, or whether the site may be disturbed.
What should you do if you find an artifact?
Use this sequence for an unexpected object, structure, or deposit that could have historical, archaeological, or cultural significance:
- Stop ground-disturbing activity nearby. Pause digging, grading, trenching, demolition, landscaping, or other work that could affect the find or surrounding soil. The legally required standstill period differs by jurisdiction; do not assume a universal number of days.
- Leave the discovery in place. Do not excavate around it, pull it out, dismantle a wall or structure, scrape away soil, or try to expose more of the object. Do not wash, polish, glue, or otherwise clean it. Soil and material attached to a find can contain evidence about its age, use, and position.
- Record what you can see without disturbing anything. Write down the date and time, the work being done, who noticed the find, and a precise description of where it lies. Photograph the object in place and take wider images showing the surrounding area.
- Report the discovery promptly. Contact the heritage, archaeology, museum, or other government authority that handles discoveries in the location where the property sits. The correct office can depend on whether the find is Indigenous or First Nations cultural material, a non-Indigenous archaeological object, a fossil, a wreck item, or possible human remains.
- Follow the authority’s directions. Ask whether the area needs to be fenced off, whether a specialist must inspect it, and what written permission is needed before work can restart. Do not treat silence, a contractor’s opinion, or a neighbor’s advice as clearance.
British Columbia’s Archaeology Branch summarizes the safest approach as: “Please do not disturb any archaeological finds or remains that you may encounter.”
Why leaving the context matters
An artifact is not just an isolated object. Its depth, orientation, nearby materials, soil layers, buildings, vegetation, and relationship to other objects may be the evidence that allows an archaeologist to interpret it. Removing a cup, tool, brick, coin, or fragment can destroy that information even when the object itself appears intact.

Actions to avoid
- Do not dig a wider hole to look for “more of the same.”
- Do not use a metal detector or probing tool around the discovery after finding it.
- Do not separate attached soil, plant roots, mortar, corrosion, or other deposits.
- Do not repair, stabilize, repaint, or dismantle a structure that may be historic.
- Do not sell, give away, export, or post the exact location publicly before the responsible authority advises you.
If the object is already loose because of erosion or construction, place nothing back into the ground and do not attempt a homemade conservation treatment. Set tools and vehicles away from the find, restrict foot traffic, and wait for instructions about temporary protection.
How to document a discovery without disturbing it
Good documentation lets an authority triage the report without asking you to excavate. Take photographs before moving people, machinery, or soil around the location.
Photographs
- Take a close image showing the object as found, with a ruler or familiar item for scale only if you can place it without touching the find.
- Take several wider photographs that show the find area, nearby structures, slopes, watercourses, fences, and access points.
- Keep the original files and note when they were taken. Avoid filters or edits that change color or shape.
Notes to make
- Exact address and, if available, map coordinates or a marked site plan.
- Date and time of discovery, weather, and whether erosion, gardening, utility work, or construction exposed it.
- Depth and position as visible, without digging to measure them.
- Visible materials, markings, inscriptions, dimensions, and condition.
- What lies immediately around it: soil color and texture, stones, timber, masonry, charcoal, shell, bone, vegetation, or other objects.
- Any earlier disturbance, such as a trench, tree fall, flood, demolition, or grading.
Do not guess an age or identify a culture from appearance alone. Report what is observable and let the relevant specialists assess significance.

Start with the government heritage or archaeology authority for the property’s country, state, province, or territory. Its website or public telephone line may direct different discoveries to separate offices. Queensland, for example, routes First Nations cultural heritage, non-Indigenous archaeological artefacts, fossils, and human remains through different contacts. Tell the intake staff exactly what was found and where; they can redirect you if another agency has jurisdiction.

Information to provide in the first report
- Your name and a reliable callback number.
- The property address and whether it is private, leased, or managed for an organization.
- A concise description of the object or feature and whether it remains in place.
- Photographs and a map or site sketch, sent through the authority’s approved channel.
- Whether machinery, weather, water, or people still pose a risk to the area.
- Whether you saw bone, teeth, a burial-like feature, ammunition, wiring, fuel, or another potential hazard.
Keep a copy of your message, photographs, and any case or reference number. Ask the authority to state the work boundary, any standstill period, and the conditions for returning to the site.
If the discovery may be human remains
Possible human remains require an immediate, separate response. Stop activity around the area, keep everyone away, and do not touch, move, clean, or expose the remains. Contact local police or the emergency authority and the relevant heritage authority immediately, following the call sequence required where you live.
British Columbia’s Archaeology Branch asks people to report possible human remains immediately and not disturb them; it says the branch will notify the Coroner’s Office and local policing authority. Queensland directs people to notify police immediately when remains are discovered during development or similar work. Michigan guidance calls for stopping activity and contacting local law enforcement and the State Historic Preservation Office for finds on private or federal land, while state-land discoveries are routed to the state natural-resources department. These are examples, not a universal procedure.
If the object could be unexploded ammunition or another immediate physical hazard, keep people away and call emergency services. Do not handle, transport, or test it. The authority handling archaeology may not be the agency responsible for a dangerous device.

Can you keep an artifact found on your property?
Not necessarily. Private ownership of the land does not settle ownership of an artifact, control of an archaeological site, reporting duties, or permission to disturb buried material. Those rules depend on the jurisdiction, the type and age of the discovery, the land category, and sometimes whether it is associated with human remains or a protected cultural site.
For example, British Columbia says archaeological sites on both public and private land are protected under its Heritage Conservation Act, whether the sites are known or unknown, and may not be altered without a permit. Newfoundland and Labrador states that archaeological artifacts are Crown property held in trust for provincial residents and may not be sold, traded, bequeathed, or taken out of the province without permission. Michigan guidance says reporting a site does not change private landownership, while applying different rules to artifacts from federal, state, tribal, and private land.
Do not keep, sell, export, donate, or give away the item until the responsible authority explains the rule that applies to your location. An official report is not an admission that you have done something wrong; it is the safest way to establish what the law requires.
Examples of jurisdiction-specific rules
The following examples show why a universal answer is unsafe. They are not interchangeable rules and do not determine what applies to another country or state.

Queensland’s official discovery guidance captures the practical reason to report uncertain cases: “Relatively recent and/or small finds can be important—if in doubt, report your find.” That page was reviewed June 6, 2025. British Columbia’s quoted guidance was last updated June 22, 2026.

Resume only after the responsible authority tells you what is permitted. Depending on the case, it may require an inspection, a protected-area boundary, a heritage-impact assessment, a permit, archaeological monitoring, or a written release. Ask whether the instruction applies only to the immediate find or to a wider project footprint.
Before restarting a project
- Obtain any required permit or written authorization.
- Give contractors a marked exclusion zone and a simple stop-work instruction.
- Preserve the photographs, notes, and agency correspondence in the project file.
- Confirm how to report additional objects or features uncovered later.
- Use a qualified archaeologist or archaeological consultant if the authority recommends an assessment or protection plan.
Michigan’s State Historic Preservation Office says its archaeologists can assist with identification and protection plans. Newfoundland and Labrador describes private consulting archaeologists as professionals who conduct impact assessments. A specialist can help after the initial report, but professional advice does not replace the duty to notify the government authority where local law requires notification.

You already moved the object
Stop handling it, place it on a clean, stable surface only if leaving it where it was creates a safety risk, and record its original position as accurately as possible. Do not clean or repair it. Tell the authority exactly what you moved, when, and how.

You already cleaned it
Do not apply further treatment. Save any removed soil, fragments, or residue in a labeled container without mixing it with other material, and disclose what was done. The authority may still be able to document the find.
You resumed work and found more material
Stop again, secure the expanded area, and report the new disturbance. Provide a timeline and photographs showing the sequence; do not backfill, relocate, or conceal additional objects unless directed.
You cannot tell whether it is important
Uncertainty is a reason to report, not to test the object yourself. Size, apparent modernity, or lack of decoration does not prove that a find has no heritage value.

- Work stopped in the immediate area.
- Object, structure, and surrounding soil left undisturbed.
- Close and wide photographs taken in place.
- Date, time, location, activity, and observations written down.
- Possible human remains or immediate hazards reported to emergency authorities.
- Heritage or archaeology authority contacted for the property’s jurisdiction.
- Ownership, reporting deadline, and work-resumption conditions confirmed with that authority.
- Instructions shared with everyone who may enter the site.
