Stop interacting with the site, but first distinguish what happened: simply connecting a wallet is not the same as approving a token transfer, signing a transaction, or exposing your recovery phrase. Disconnect the site and separately check token approvals. If you entered your recovery phrase or private key, treat that wallet as compromised and move any remaining assets to a new wallet with a new phrase, using a secure device and official wallet instructions.
What happens when you connect a crypto wallet to a suspicious site?
A wallet connection typically shares its public address with the site. That can let the site display the address’s balances and public transaction activity, but it does not by itself reveal the recovery phrase or give the site authority to move tokens.
Other actions carry different risks. A token approval gives a contract permission to interact with specified tokens, sometimes up to an unlimited amount. A signed permit can authorize a future transaction without moving funds immediately; the Singapore Police Force describes this risk in its 1 July 2026 advisory. Signing a transaction may already have transferred assets or changed permissions. Sharing a recovery phrase or private key gives someone who obtains it control of the wallet.
So, if you connected your crypto wallet to a suspicious website, that alone does not prove you have been hacked. What you clicked, signed, or disclosed determines the next step.

What to do first
- Stop interacting with the site. Close it. Do not follow prompts to “verify,” “synchronize,” or “secure” your wallet, and do not return through the same link.
- Use an independent route to your wallet provider. Type a known official address yourself or use a trusted bookmark. Do not trust support links or phone numbers sent by the suspicious site or an unexpected contact.
- If the device may be compromised, use a different trusted device. Kraken advises disconnecting a device from the internet if someone may have access to the wallet, then using a secure device to protect remaining assets. See its compromised-wallet guidance.
- Work out what you did. Check whether you only connected, approved spending, signed a transaction or permit, or entered a recovery phrase or private key. If you are unsure, treat the interaction as potentially risky and inspect the wallet’s activity and permissions.

If you only connected the wallet
Disconnect the site using your wallet’s connected-app or dapp-permissions settings. Then check the wallet’s activity and token approvals: a connection and an approval are separate actions, and closing or disconnecting a site does not necessarily revoke an onchain approval.
If you approved token spending or signed a permit
Inspect token allowances on each network you use and revoke approvals you do not recognize or no longer need. An approval can give a contract authority over the relevant tokens; a permit signature may authorize later movement even if no immediate transfer appeared. Coinbase warns that unlimited allowances can let a malicious contract withdraw the full token balance covered by its access in its dapp permissions and token approvals guidance.
Use your wallet’s own controls or reach a trusted approval-checking service through verified official documentation. The UK National Crime Agency’s Operation ATLANTIC page identifies Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker and Revoke.cash as tools for reviewing approvals. Carefully inspect any revocation transaction before signing it: revocation itself requires a wallet signature and may incur a network fee. Never use a tool link supplied by the suspicious site or an unsolicited “support” contact.

If you signed a transaction
Review the wallet’s activity and the relevant blockchain explorer for transactions you did not intend. Record the transaction hashes and check whether assets moved or permissions changed. Onchain transfers generally cannot be undone, so act quickly to secure anything that remains.
If you entered or shared your recovery phrase or private key
Treat the wallet as compromised. Disconnecting the site or revoking approvals cannot make an exposed phrase secret again. Create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase on a secure device, record the new phrase securely, and transfer remaining assets as soon as you can do so safely. A wallet created from the exposed phrase is not a safe replacement. Never paste a recovery phrase into a website, support chat, or approval tool.
Follow the wallet provider’s official migration instructions. Kraken’s guidance covers both seed-phrase and embedded wallets. If you use an embedded wallet, also secure the identity used to sign in—such as your email, Apple, Google, or passkey account—sign out unknown sessions, and change the password where applicable.

How to disconnect and revoke an approval
Wallet menus differ, so use the provider’s current official instructions rather than relying on a generic menu path. Coinbase documents controls for connected dapps and token approvals in its wallet permissions guide. It also describes an automatic access-revocation behavior for its in-app encrypted Dapp Browser when a dapp is closed; that is specific to that product and should not be assumed for other wallets.
- Open the wallet’s official app or extension, not a link from the suspicious page.
- Find connected apps, dapp permissions, or a similarly named setting and disconnect the suspicious site.
- Separately open the token-approval or allowance controls for each network where you use the wallet.
- Review unfamiliar or unnecessary allowances. Confirm the network, token, and contract before revoking.
- Read the transaction details in your wallet before signing. Make sure you have the network’s native token available for any required fee.
Contact providers, preserve evidence, and report the incident
Contact the wallet provider and any exchange or custodial platform involved using contact details obtained independently from its official site or app. Ask whether it can secure your account or stop activity within services it controls. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, timestamps, screenshots, the suspicious URL, and relevant messages.
Report the incident through the police, cybercrime, or consumer-protection channels for your location. Reporting routes differ by jurisdiction: Singapore’s Police Force advisory lists Singapore-specific contacts, while the UK NCA’s Operation ATLANTIC page discusses UK reporting and cross-border contacts. The NCA page is marked expired, so verify current contact routes through official government channels before using them.

Do not expect a provider to reverse a blockchain transfer. Kraken states, “Onchain transactions cannot be reversed,” and says it cannot freeze a seed-phrase wallet or retrieve assets sent to another address in its wallet-compromise guidance. Contacting a provider can still matter: the European supervisory authorities’ 2025 consumer factsheet notes that a provider may be able to freeze an account on its own platform or blacklist an address.
Watch out for recovery scams
Stop communicating with the original scammer. Be wary of unexpected calls, messages, or emails from people claiming to be wallet support, law enforcement, regulators, or crypto-recovery specialists. The NCA warns that Operation ATLANTIC participants do not offer recovery services, and the European authorities caution that recovery-room fraud targets people who have already lost money.

- Do not pay an upfront “unlock,” “tax,” or recovery fee.
- Do not share your recovery phrase, private key, passwords, one-time codes, or remote access to your device.
- Verify any claimed authority or provider contact through its independently located official channels.
How to reduce risk next time
- Open dapps from a source you can independently verify, and check the site address carefully.
- Read wallet prompts before approving or signing. A connection, token approval, permit, and transaction are different requests.
- Avoid unlimited token allowances when a smaller allowance will do, and review approvals periodically.
- Keep your recovery phrase offline and private. The Singapore Police Force advises not entering a seed phrase on a website, application, or device you do not fully trust.
- A hardware wallet may add protection for storing keys, but it is not an emergency cure: it does not make a malicious transaction safe to sign, and a replacement wallet must have a new phrase if the old one was exposed.
