Stop interacting with the page, close it, and work out what—if anything—you disclosed. A click alone does not prove that your TikTok account, device, or money was compromised. The response depends on whether you only opened the destination, entered a password or verification code, supplied payment or identity details, sent money, or downloaded software or granted remote access.
Use the genuine app, website, or telephone number for the service involved—not a link, number, or message supplied by the ad. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises contacting a company directly through a link you already use or a phone number you know is correct. (FTC guidance)
Do these things first
- Leave the suspicious destination. Close the browser tab or app page. Do not answer follow-up messages, return through the advertisement, install an app it recommends, or pay anyone who offers to “recover” your money.
- Use trusted contact details. Open TikTok, your bank’s existing app, or the company’s address that you typed or bookmarked previously. Do not use contact information shown on the scam page.
- Record what happened. Note the ad, account name, destination address, time, screenshots, receipts, transaction IDs, and messages. Keep this information for TikTok, your bank, or a government report, but do not revisit the page just to collect it.
- Classify your exposure. Decide whether you only opened the page; entered a password or verification code; supplied card, bank, Social Security, or other identity information; paid; downloaded a file or app; or granted remote access. More than one category can apply.
The FTC cautions that even opening an unexpected link can expose someone to scammers, but that warning does not establish that malware was installed or that an account was accessed. Take the conditional steps below that match what you actually did.
Match the exposure to the right response

If you only opened the ad
If you did not type information, approve a sign-in, download anything, or grant access, there may be no further account action to take. Do not treat the click itself as proof of infection or takeover. Keep an eye on TikTok, email, and financial accounts for alerts you do not recognize, and report the ad or account while you still have its details.

Do not “test” the page again, enter fake information, or follow instructions that claim you must install a security tool, pay a fee, or contact a supposed support agent. A person who contacts you because you clicked may be attempting a second scam.
If you entered a TikTok password or verification code
Change the password from TikTok itself
Open the official TikTok app or type TikTok’s known web address yourself. Change the password promptly, even if you have not seen suspicious activity. If you used that password anywhere else, change it on every reused service, giving each account a unique password. A verification code is also sensitive: anyone who received it may be able to complete a sign-in attempt, so report the suspected compromise to TikTok.

TikTok’s account-safety guidance recommends enabling 2-step verification, checking logged-in devices, reviewing security activity and alerts, and verifying contact methods. The documented path for security alerts is Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → Security alerts. Labels can change between app versions or regions, so use the security settings that appear in your genuine TikTok app. (TikTok Support: Account safety)

Security checkup also lists managing trusted devices and adding a passkey. These are account-hardening options; finding no unfamiliar device does not prove that a scammer never saw the credential, and seeing an unfamiliar device is a reason to remove it and continue with TikTok’s recovery process.
If you entered card, bank, or payment details
Contact the provider through an official channel
Use the card issuer’s or bank’s genuine app or website, or a telephone number printed on the physical card or on a statement you already trust. For a payment app or money-transfer service, open its established app or type its known web address. Explain that your information may have been exposed, or that a transaction was fraudulent, and ask what to do about the account or card.
For a credit or debit card, ask the issuer to investigate the charge. For an unauthorized debit or withdrawal, contact the bank. If you sent money through a transfer app, contact the company behind that app and report the fraudulent transaction. Ask whether the payment can be reversed, but do not assume recovery is guaranteed: the outcome depends on the payment method, provider, timing, and circumstances. Check for follow-on activity
Review recent and pending transactions, account-profile changes, new payees, password-reset notices, and replacement-card requests. Save the provider’s case number and any instructions it gives you. If the provider asks you to move money to a “safe” account, disclose a one-time code, or pay a fee to protect funds, stop and verify through the number on your card or statement; those demands are common signs of another scam.

If you supplied Social Security or other identity information
U.S. readers who gave a scammer a Social Security number or other identity data should use IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. The FTC specifically directs people there when they think they have given someone a Social Security, credit-card, or bank-account number.
Also contact the fraud department of each affected financial institution. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says people dealing with identity theft should close affected accounts and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. A freeze or alert is a response to identity-theft risk, not a declaration that every person who clicked an ad has been victimized. (CFPB identity-theft guidance)
Follow the instructions from the institutions involved, preserve confirmation numbers, and watch credit and account records for changes you did not authorize. The FTC and CFPB routes cited here are U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should use their bank’s local fraud team and their country’s official consumer-protection or identity-theft service.
If a file or app may have downloaded
A download is a different risk from merely viewing a page. Do not open an unexpected file or continue using an app that the ad instructed you to install. The FTC recommends updating the security software already on the computer or phone, running a scan, and removing anything the scan identifies as a problem. (FTC phishing guidance)

That advice does not require buying a new antivirus product solely because you clicked a link. Use the security tools already on the device and follow their documented remediation steps. If the scan reports a problem, keep records of the detection and complete the tool’s removal or quarantine process before signing in to sensitive accounts from that device.
If someone obtained remote access or your phone number
If you installed remote-control software, allowed a stranger to operate the device, or believe control of your mobile number was hijacked, treat the event as an account-and-device incident rather than a simple click. Secure affected accounts using a device you trust, and contact your mobile provider through its official channel to recover a hijacked number. The FTC’s scam-recovery guidance covers this escalation. In a browser, the flow begins from the profile’s More options menu. TikTok’s instructions document account reporting; they do not establish that every advertisement type has an identical ad-specific menu in every region. Report fraud to U.S. agencies
U.S. consumers can submit a fraud report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also lists forwarding phishing texts to SPAM (7726) and phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org; those channels apply to the corresponding text or email, not necessarily to an in-feed TikTok ad.
The CFPB points consumers to the FBI, a state attorney general, and local police as possible reporting contacts. Use official agency websites or contact details you already know. Someone claiming to be law enforcement, a bank investigator, or a recovery specialist who asks for money to “protect” your funds is not a reason to bypass those checks. Continue monitoring after the initial response
- Review TikTok security alerts, logged-in devices, email, and other reused-password accounts.
- Check bank, card, and payment-service activity for unauthorized charges, withdrawals, new payees, or profile changes.
- Keep the incident timeline, screenshots, receipts, provider case numbers, and reports together.
- Be skeptical of callers or messages promising refunds, account “verification,” or paid recovery. Verify every contact independently.
- If you are outside the United States, ask your bank and local government consumer-protection or identity-theft service for the equivalent reporting and recovery steps.
The central decision is not how alarming the ad looked; it is what access or information the click led you to disclose. Stop the contact, use the genuine organization for the affected asset, and escalate only the exposure categories that actually occurred.
