If your Southwest boarding pass will not open, retrieve the reservation again with your confirmation number and a passenger’s first and last name in the Southwest app or on Southwest.com. If that fails, use an airport self-service kiosk where available or ask a Southwest agent at the ticket counter. You need a boarding pass or an accepted security document to pass through TSA, and you need an actual boarding pass to board the aircraft.
Act immediately because Southwest’s check-in and gate deadlines still apply even when the problem is technical. The steps below put the fastest recovery options first and explain which travelers must use an airport counter.
Start with the fastest digital recovery
- Open the Southwest app or mobile website. Choose the option to retrieve or check in to an existing reservation.
- Enter the confirmation number and a passenger’s first and last name. Southwest’s desktop check-in process uses these details. Check the spelling against the reservation, including hyphens and middle-name fields if shown.
- Complete check-in if it has not been completed. A boarding pass is generated through the app or mobile website after successful check-in.
- Save or display the pass. Increase your phone’s screen brightness, keep the pass open before reaching the checkpoint, and take a screenshot only as a backup. A screenshot does not fix an incorrect or incomplete check-in.
If the reservation cannot be retrieved online, do not assume it has disappeared. The booking may still be available through an airport kiosk or a Southwest employee.

Check Apple Wallet or Google Wallet
If you previously added the mobile boarding pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, open the saved pass even if the Southwest app is having trouble. Wallet storage is useful when an app session has expired or airport connectivity is weak. Confirm that the name, flight, date and barcode on the saved pass match the trip before relying on it.

A wallet copy is not available for every passenger or itinerary. Southwest identifies lap children, unaccompanied minors, certain international itineraries, partner reservations, and military and government fares as categories that are not eligible for mobile boarding passes. Eligibility can depend on the specific itinerary, so a missing mobile option may be a rule rather than a technical failure.
Print a boarding pass at the airport kiosk
Southwest self-service kiosks can retrieve a reservation and print a boarding pass at airports where the service is available. At the kiosk, use one of the identification methods it offers:
- Your confirmation number.
- Your Rapid Rewards number.
- A mobile boarding pass, if you can display one.
- Your passport.
- A major credit card bearing the traveler’s name.
Follow the on-screen prompts to locate the trip, confirm the passenger and flight, and print the pass. If the kiosk finds the reservation but does not offer the action you need, follow its instruction to visit a counter rather than repeatedly restarting the transaction.

When to use the Southwest ticket counter
Go directly to a Southwest ticket counter if the kiosk cannot find the reservation, the itinerary requires document verification, or you fall into a category Southwest says must be handled by an agent. Unaccompanied minors and customers traveling on group reservations must use the counter. Certain partner itineraries can also have limited kiosk functionality.
Have the confirmation number and a government-issued identity document ready. Explain that you need the boarding pass for a specific flight and show any saved reservation email or wallet pass. The agent can check whether you are checked in, correct a retrieval problem, and tell you which airport channel to use next.
Southwest’s formal carriage terms list kiosks, Skycap podiums, ticket counters and departure-gate podiums as possible boarding-pass distribution points, subject to availability. Southwest also reserves the right to restrict distribution to the gate podium. In practice, follow the signs and instructions from airport staff rather than assuming every location can print every pass.
Understand a security document versus a boarding pass
Southwest sometimes issues a security document when it cannot issue the final boarding pass immediately. Southwest’s online check-in guidance states: “To pass through security, you must retrieve your boarding pass or security document either online or at the airport.” A security document therefore may let you proceed through TSA to the departure gate.

It is not permission to board. Southwest’s security-document guidance states: “To board the plane, you’ll need to obtain your boarding pass at the airport.” After reaching the gate, follow the agent’s instructions to exchange or complete the document process and receive the boarding pass. Do not leave the airport or assume the security document will be scanned at aircraft boarding.
Do not miss Southwest’s time limits

These are operating deadlines in Southwest’s current online check-in guidance, not guarantees that an agent can make an exception. Airport security lines, parking, baggage drop and a kiosk queue all consume the same clock. If you are already inside the airport and the digital recovery fails, go to a kiosk or counter immediately instead of trying multiple app resets.
Choose the recovery route that fits your situation

Troubleshoot a pass that will not load
The confirmation number is rejected
Re-enter the code without spaces, verify that you selected the correct passenger, and try the mobile website if the app fails (or the app if the website fails). Check whether the booking was made under a different passenger’s first and last name. If you still cannot retrieve it, take the confirmation email or itinerary details to a kiosk or counter.

Move to a stronger connection, close and reopen the app, and sign in again. If the pass was saved to a wallet, open that copy. Do not rely on a frozen image that does not show the current flight information; ask an agent to print a new pass.

The app says you are not eligible for a mobile pass
Treat the message as an eligibility issue, not necessarily a booking error. Use the airport kiosk if the itinerary supports it, or go to the counter for the required paper boarding pass or document review.
The kiosk cannot find the reservation
Try the confirmation number, Rapid Rewards number, passport or named credit card options the kiosk provides. If none works, stop using that machine and ask a Southwest employee. A different kiosk may not solve a partner-itinerary or passenger-category restriction.
You have reached the airport close to departure
Tell the first Southwest employee you see that you lack a boarding pass and state the flight’s scheduled departure time. Use the fastest directed channel, keep identification ready, and do not queue for a general service issue when a gate or counter agent has sent you elsewhere. If the check-in cutoff has passed, ask what rebooking options remain; Southwest’s guidance warns that a missed cutoff can mean the next available flight.

Unaccompanied minors
Southwest routes unaccompanied minors to the ticket counter, and they are among the categories not eligible for mobile boarding passes. Plan for an in-person document and escort process rather than attempting to force a mobile pass.

Group reservations
Customers traveling on group reservations must use the counter according to Southwest’s airport-lobby guidance. Bring the group confirmation information and arrive early enough for the agent to process each traveler.
International and partner travel
Some international itineraries and partner reservations do not support mobile passes or kiosk handling. Document checks may also require an agent. Use the international cutoff of 60 minutes before scheduled departure, or 75 minutes for Aruba, and verify the airport’s instructions when you arrive.
Lap children, military and government fares
Southwest lists lap children and military and government fares among categories that may not receive mobile boarding passes. Go to the counter if the app does not offer a pass, even when other passengers on the same booking have mobile passes.

Prepare a backup before leaving home
- Save the confirmation number in a password manager or secure note, not only in an email that may be difficult to open.
- Add an eligible mobile pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet after check-in.
- Carry government-issued identification required for the trip and keep the reservation details accessible.
- Charge your phone before traveling. Some airports list charging stations, but availability varies; a portable power bank can keep a device running but cannot restore a missing reservation or replace a kiosk or agent.
- Allow enough time to reach a kiosk or counter before the applicable check-in cutoff and to be in the gate area at least 10 minutes before departure.
Losing access to the digital screen does not by itself cancel a Southwest reservation. The practical recovery path is to retrieve the booking online, use a saved wallet pass, print at a kiosk, or obtain help from an airport employee—while treating the published cutoffs as firm operating constraints.
