Do not assume your Zcash is gone because a wallet will not open, sign in, or finish syncing during a network upgrade. First identify whether the failure is in the wallet app, its synchronization service, a full node, or a recovery scan. Then use only the wallet’s official update and recovery process; never give a recovery phrase or private key to support, a website, or a person claiming to unlock funds.
Identify which problem you actually have
“I cannot access my wallet” can describe several unrelated failures. The correct remedy depends on the wallet name, device and operating system, whether the wallet is custodial or self-custody, and the exact error message. Record those details before changing anything.

A network upgrade changes consensus rules at a scheduled block height. It does not by itself prove that a particular wallet has lost funds or that every end-user application requires a manual migration.
If the wallet app will not open or you cannot sign in
- Stop using unofficial installers. Download updates only through the wallet’s established app store listing, desktop updater, or official website. Do not click a “recovery” link sent by direct message or email.
- Check the provider’s status and support pages. Look for a maintenance notice that names the network upgrade, affected platform, and expected service behavior. A provider outage can look like a protocol problem.
- Confirm your device environment. Note the operating-system version, wallet version, and whether the failure happens before or after entering credentials. Preserve the exact error text or a screenshot with private information hidden.
- Do not disclose secrets while asking for help. A legitimate support agent does not need your seed phrase, private key, or wallet backup to diagnose an app failure.
- Use the provider’s documented recovery path only after verifying compatibility. Reinstalling an arbitrary wallet can create a second problem if it does not support the account type or shielded pools used by the original wallet.
The Zcash Foundation states that it does not collect, hold, or have access to wallet keys, seed phrases, or the contents of shielded transactions (privacy policy). It also does not operate every third-party wallet. Therefore, contacting the Foundation cannot restore keys that a separate wallet provider controls.

If the wallet opens but will not sync
Remote or light-wallet synchronization
Many wallets obtain chain data from a remote service instead of maintaining the entire Zcash blockchain locally. In that arrangement, the wallet can open normally while balances remain stale because its server is offline, upgrading, or not yet compatible with the activated rules. Check that wallet’s own status page and release notes for the upgrade name and supported version. Avoid repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the app: doing so does not repair an unavailable synchronization service and can complicate recovery if you have not verified your backup.
Compare what the app reports with an independent, publicly viewable transaction record only when you can do so without exposing a viewing key or private key. A delayed display is not the same as a failed transaction. Keep the transaction identifier, approximate time, amount, and whether the transfer involved a transparent or shielded address for the provider’s support team.
Wallets connected to a full node
If you run a full node, the node software must understand the active consensus rules and peer protocol. The official upgrade pages direct node operators to Zebra documentation and state that zcashd is being deprecated and will be replaced by the Zebra full node. Follow the version-specific instructions on the relevant official upgrade page rather than copying commands from an old forum post.

Do not interpret a stalled block height as proof of a lost balance. During an upgrade, an outdated node can stop communicating with peers that require the newer protocol. The protocol specification explains that upgraded nodes disconnect from peers below the minimum protocol version; non-upgraded nodes can be partitioned onto an old-protocol network. It also notes that a chain reorganization across an activation height is possible (Zcash Protocol Specification). These conditions can produce synchronization errors while the keys remain intact.
Before making a node change, write down the node software version, wallet software version, current block height, peer count, operating system, and the exact log message. Use the official upgrade documentation for the release and network you are running. If the node is managed by an organization or hosted service, ask that operator to confirm its upgrade status instead of attempting an uncoordinated migration.
What the current upgrade information means
As of October 13, 2026, the official Network Upgrade 7 page says that the activation height has not yet been set and describes NU7 as a planned major upgrade. It directs node operators to Zebra guidance and says zcashd is being deprecated (Network Upgrade 7). This is node-operator guidance, not a statement that every wallet user must manually move funds.

An activation height is a protocol milestone, not an account lock. Whether you need an update depends on how your particular wallet obtains chain data and signs transactions.

A recovery phrase restores key material only when the destination wallet supports the relevant account format, derivation method, and shielded pools. It is not a universal password that can be entered into any Zcash application. Identify the original wallet and account type first, then use that wallet’s documented restore screen.
- Verify the application. Obtain the wallet from its official distribution channel and confirm that it supports the account and shielded pools you used.
- Enter the phrase offline where possible. Never paste it into a website, chat, support ticket, screen-sharing session, or “recovery service.”
- Choose the documented restore option. Do not create a new wallet and assume the phrase was rejected; a new account can simply have a different derivation path.
- Allow the initial scan to finish. A restored wallet may show an empty or partial balance while it examines historical blocks. Keep the device powered and connected as the wallet requires.
- Check shielded and transparent areas separately. A wallet can display one pool while still scanning another. Record the last scanned height and any warning shown by the app.
- Escalate with non-secret diagnostics. Give support the wallet version, platform, restore method, scan height, and error text, but never the phrase or private key.
Why shielded funds may take time to appear
Draft ZIP 326, dated June 30, 2026, describes a technical consequence of NU6.3 for wallet scanning. It explains that the use_qsk setting is not stored in wallet recovery information, so a wallet restoring from a seed may initially need to scan using both possible values. The purpose is interoperability across wallet implementations, not a guarantee about any named consumer app (draft ZIP 326).

Because ZIP 326 is draft technical guidance, treat it as an explanation for developers and wallet implementers rather than a promise that every application exposes two scan modes. The practical implication for a user is to allow the official restore process to complete and to ask the wallet provider whether its current release handles the relevant shielded pool and derivation settings.
A seed restore that finishes quickly but shows no shielded balance can therefore require compatibility checking and a complete rescan, not an immediate conclusion that the funds were destroyed. Do not try random derivation paths or import the phrase into multiple unrelated applications; that increases exposure without establishing which account format was used.

- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Anyone who obtains it can control self-custodied funds. Support personnel, wallet developers, and the Zcash Foundation cannot legitimately require it to inspect a sync error.
- Reject “unlock” or “validation” payments. A stranger promising to release funds after you pay a fee is not an official recovery mechanism.
- Do not install remote-control software for support. Screen sharing can expose seed entry, private keys, passwords, and wallet files.
- Use signed, official releases. An upgrade notice should identify the project, version, and distribution channel. Treat shortened links and unsolicited attachments as hostile.
- Protect screenshots and logs. Redact seeds, private keys, spending keys, viewing keys, addresses when unnecessary, passwords, and personally identifying information before posting diagnostics.
What to send when you need technical support
Prepare a concise incident report so the wallet team can distinguish an app outage from a protocol or scanning issue:

- Wallet name and exact version
- Device model and operating-system version
- Self-custody, custodial, remote/light-wallet, or full-node setup
- Transparent, shielded, or mixed account use
- Whether the app launches, signs in, displays a balance, and shows a current block height
- Exact error text, timestamp, and the upgrade name or activation height mentioned
- For a full node: node implementation, software version, block height, peer status, and relevant log excerpt with secrets removed
- For a restore: whether the phrase is available, the scan height reached, and the account or pool the wallet claims to support
This information is enough for most first-line diagnosis. Do not include the recovery phrase, private key, wallet password, or an unredacted wallet database.
When to wait, when to update, and when to stop
Waiting is reasonable when
- The provider has announced maintenance or an upgrade-related synchronization delay.
- The wallet is scanning and its displayed scan height continues to advance.
- A full node is following the official migration path and its logs show normal peer or replay activity.
Update through official guidance when
- The wallet provider lists a minimum version for the active network rules.
- Your full node is an older implementation covered by the deprecation notice for
zcashd. - The official release notes specifically address your platform and failure message.
Stop and seek verified help when
- An app asks for your seed phrase outside the documented restore screen.
- A website or person claims to recover funds without controlling the wallet software or keys.
- The wallet shows conflicting account types, an unexplained derivation choice, or a completed scan with no expected account and no documented explanation.
The central distinction is custody: a custodial provider must repair access on its service, while a self-custody user must preserve and use compatible key material. A network upgrade can expose software and synchronization incompatibilities, but it does not, by itself, freeze or erase the underlying keys.
