Stop before setting it up. An unauthorized seller does not prove that your Trezor is counterfeit, but it makes the device’s previous handling unknown. Photograph the package, compare it with the authentication guide for your exact model, and use Trezor Suite from Trezor’s official channel. If firmware is already installed on a new device or Suite reports an authenticity failure, do not use the wallet and contact Trezor Support. Never give anyone your wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase.

What an unauthorized purchase means

Trezor’s official safety guidance says: “Never buy a Trezor from an unauthorized third party, as you can never tell who may have had access to it before you.” That warning is about uncertain provenance. It is not, by itself, proof that the individual device in your hands is fake or compromised.

Your priority is to establish whether the device can be trusted before it receives funds or reveals any wallet information. Treat the seller history as a risk signal, not as an authenticity result. A marketplace may be legitimate while a particular listing was supplied by an unknown seller, returned by another customer, opened, or altered.

  • Not yet initialized: preserve the device and packaging, perform the official checks, and stop if any check fails.
  • Already initialized: do not disclose the wallet backup or other secrets. If Trezor Suite reports a failure, protect funds using Trezor’s current recovery instructions before retiring the device.
  • Seeking a refund: deal with the seller or marketplace. Trezor says its own RMA process is for purchases made through its e-shop.

Do this before connecting or initializing the device

1. Preserve evidence

Take clear photographs of the shipping box, product box, seals, labels, accessories, and the marketplace listing. Save the order confirmation, seller name, listing URL, messages, and payment record. Do this before removing anything else. These records help with a seller dispute even if the device later passes its technical checks.

2. Do not enter a wallet backup anywhere

A wallet backup (also called a recovery seed) controls the assets in the wallet. Do not type it into a website, support form, chat, phone app, computer file, or another hardware wallet merely to “verify” a Trezor. Trezor says support will not ask for your wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase while investigating an authenticity case. Anyone who requests them is not following that process.

3. Check the exact model’s packaging guide

Use the authentication instructions for the precise model and packaging generation, rather than comparing your box with a current product photograph. Trezor has changed packaging over time, so an older-looking box is not conclusive evidence of tampering. For example, the Model One guidance includes a seal check and says to contact support immediately if the relevant seal is not intact; other models can use different packaging details.

4. Stop if the box or contents are suspicious

A broken or missing seal, unexplained opening, missing accessories, or instructions that differ materially from the model guide should end the setup attempt. Do not “test” a questionable device by creating a wallet or depositing a small amount. Contact Trezor Support with your photographs and purchase information.

How to check whether the seller and device claims are credible

Check the actual seller, not only the marketplace

Trezor identifies its official shop, its official Amazon storefront, and resellers on its current authorized list as generally safe purchase channels. On a marketplace, inspect the “sold by” or equivalent seller field, not just the platform’s name. A marketplace listing can change sellers, and a channel-level recommendation does not authenticate every individual listing.

If the seller is absent from the current official list, keep the provenance concern active even when the listing has positive reviews. Reviews describe buyers’ experiences; they do not establish who had physical access to your unit or whether firmware and packaging were altered.

Do not use a box number as a serial-number test

Trezor says its devices do not have serial numbers. A number printed on a box identifies a packaging batch, not a unique device, and it is not a standalone authenticity proof. Do not send a box number to a stranger who claims to be able to “unlock” or validate the wallet. Use the reseller list, model-specific packaging instructions, and the software checks instead.

Use model-specific hardware checks

Inspect seals, labels, cable, documentation, and other contents against the guide for your model. Do not generalize a detail from Model One to another Trezor. For Safe-series devices, Trezor separately describes a device-authentication check involving Secure Elements. The exact check and expected result depend on the model, so follow the instructions for that device rather than an online checklist made for a different one.

Firmware and Trezor Suite checks

A new Trezor should arrive without firmware

Trezor says devices are shipped without firmware and that firmware is installed during setup. If a new, uninitialized device reports that firmware is already present, do not use it. Do not reinstall firmware, initialize it, or connect it to a wallet in an attempt to clear the warning. Preserve the state and ask Trezor Support what to do.

Install Suite through Trezor’s official channel

Download Trezor Suite from Trezor’s official distribution channel and follow the setup instructions for your model. Avoid software linked from an unsolicited message, a seller’s chat, a pop-up, or a search advertisement that asks for a recovery seed. Keep the device disconnected until Suite is installed from a source you independently reached.

Understand an authenticity warning

When the device is connected, Suite checks the authenticity of the firmware. Trezor’s firmware-authenticity material describes verification of the firmware signature, version, and RevisionID; a mismatch produces a warning. These checks are important safeguards, but they should not be turned into a claim that counterfeit risk is impossible. A passing software check does not make an unknown seller an authorized one, and a packaging difference alone does not prove failure.

What to do if Trezor Suite reports an authenticity failure

New and never-initialized device

  1. Stop using the device immediately. Do not initialize it, install replacement firmware, or connect it to a wallet.
  2. Keep the box, seals, accessories, and purchase records together.
  3. Contact Trezor Support through its official support channel and provide the model, the exact warning, and photographs. Do not include your wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase.
  4. Separately contact the seller or marketplace to request a return or refund. Trezor’s RMA policy does not replace the seller’s obligation for an off-site purchase.

Device that has already been initialized

An initialized device requires a funds-protection response, not a routine setup retry. Do not panic, but do not disclose secrets or continue normal use while the warning is unresolved. Trezor’s authenticity-failure guidance describes moving funds to a new wallet, stopping use of the failed device and its wallet backup, obtaining a legitimate replacement, creating a new wallet backup on that replacement, and then moving funds to the new wallet.

  • Do not share or photograph the existing wallet backup. Anyone who obtains it can potentially control the assets.
  • Do not reveal the PIN or passphrase to support, the seller, or a person offering remote help.
  • Do not create new receiving addresses with the failed device; Trezor states that it will not be able to generate new receive addresses after this failure.
  • Follow the current Suite and support instructions for your software version. Click paths and available migration options can change.

If you must transfer assets, verify the destination address and network on a trusted screen before confirming each transaction. The general rescue path may not apply identically to every asset, account type, token, or multisignature arrangement. If an asset or account cannot be moved as described in the current instructions, stop and ask official support rather than improvising with a website or a person in a direct message.

Moving funds safely after a failed check

Create a clean destination

Use a legitimate replacement Trezor obtained through an official channel or an authorized reseller. Set it up as a new wallet and write its new backup using the device’s instructions. Never reuse the backup from the questioned device. Keep the new backup offline and protect it as the sole recovery authority for that wallet.

Transfer and verify

  1. Confirm that the replacement device and its firmware pass the normal authenticity checks.
  2. Open the correct account and asset in the current official Suite instructions.
  3. Compare the destination address and network on the device’s trusted display, not only on the computer screen.
  4. Send a small test transaction only when the asset and network support it and the official instructions do not prohibit it; then verify receipt before sending the remainder.
  5. After the transfer is confirmed, stop using the failed device and its old wallet backup.

Network fees, confirmations, address formats, and account derivation differ by asset. A successful transfer of one asset does not prove that every account has migrated. Record transaction IDs and confirmation status without recording your recovery words.

Returns, refunds, warranty, and support

Trezor’s FAQ says it can process RMA requests only for purchases completed in its own e-shop. For a device bought from another seller, it directs the customer to contact the seller and negotiate compensation directly. Warranty conditions can vary by country and by reseller policy.

Send the seller the order number, seller identity, photographs, the listing, and the exact Suite warning, but never send a wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase. Ask for a prepaid return process and written confirmation of the refund terms. Keep the device in the condition required by the seller’s return policy, while avoiding any step that would initialize or alter it after an authenticity warning.

Consumer-law rights and dispute deadlines depend on your location, payment method, and purchase facts. Trezor’s support pages do not decide the outcome of an individual marketplace dispute. If the seller refuses a remedy, use the marketplace’s formal dispute process or your payment provider’s procedure before its deadline, supplying the evidence you preserved.

Choosing a legitimate replacement

If support confirms that replacement is appropriate, buy a genuine Trezor from Trezor’s official shop, its official Amazon storefront, or a reseller listed on the current official reseller page. Check the actual marketplace seller at checkout. Keep the invoice and packaging until the device has completed setup and authenticity checks.

Purchase route What to verify Who normally handles a problem
Trezor official shop Order confirmation and intact model-appropriate packaging Trezor’s e-shop RMA process, subject to its terms
Official Amazon storefront The seller shown on the listing and at checkout, plus the model guide Seller or marketplace process; confirm applicable warranty terms
Authorized reseller That the exact seller appears on Trezor’s current list The reseller under its country-specific policy
Unauthorized marketplace seller Provenance is uncertain even if the package looks normal Seller or marketplace; Trezor says its e-shop RMA does not apply

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Initializing a device that already has firmware: Trezor says a new device should receive firmware during setup, so preinstalled firmware is a stop signal.
  • Using a different model’s packaging checklist: seals and packaging generations differ.
  • Treating a box batch number as a serial number: Trezor says devices have no serial numbers.
  • Assuming a marketplace name means an authorized seller: inspect the actual seller field.
  • Entering the recovery seed to prove ownership: no legitimate authenticity investigation requires it.
  • Continuing to receive funds after a failed check: Trezor says a failed device cannot generate new receive addresses.
  • Relying on a visual pass alone: packaging changes over time; combine the seller, model guide, firmware state, and Suite result.

A practical decision table

What you observe Action
Seller is unauthorized, but the device is unopened and no checks have been run Photograph it, compare the exact model’s packaging, install official Suite, and stop if any check fails.
Seal is damaged or contents are missing Do not initialize; contact Trezor Support and the seller with photographs.
New device reports firmware already installed Do not use it; preserve it and contact support.
New, uninitialized device fails Suite authenticity Stop immediately; contact support and pursue a seller or marketplace remedy.
Initialized device fails Suite authenticity Keep secrets private, follow current funds-transfer guidance, replace the device, and retire the old backup.
Device passes checks but seller was unauthorized Continue to treat provenance as a risk consideration; retain purchase records and use official support for any anomaly.

Bottom line

An unauthorized purchase calls for caution, not a rushed conclusion. Do not initialize a device that already contains firmware, do not ignore a Suite authenticity warning, and never disclose your wallet backup, PIN, or passphrase. Use the exact model’s packaging guidance and official software checks, contact Trezor Support when a check fails, and seek compensation from the seller or marketplace. If an initialized device fails, protect the funds first and replace both the device and its wallet backup through a legitimate purchase channel.
