Stop sending money, contact the exchange or cryptocurrency ATM operator you used, and report the scam. Save the transaction details and every message. A completed crypto transfer may be difficult to recover, so treat any promise of a guaranteed refund—or demand for an upfront recovery fee—as a warning sign.
What to do first
- Stop paying and stop following the scammer’s instructions. Do not send more cryptocurrency to cover supposed taxes, verification, withdrawal, or account-unlocking charges. Do not give the person your seed phrase, password, or other account credentials.
- Contact the exchange or ATM operator promptly. Tell its support team that the transaction was connected to fraud and ask whether it can stop, reverse, or refund it. Use contact information you find independently on the operator’s official website—not a link or phone number sent by the person who contacted you. The FTC recommends contacting the payment operator immediately, while cautioning that crypto payments do not have the same legal protections as credit and debit card payments and can be difficult to recover. FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams.
- Secure accounts if your access or credentials may be exposed. Contact the relevant exchange through its independently verified official channel. If you reused a password, change it on affected accounts and enable available security protections. Do not respond to urgent unsolicited messages claiming that your account has been compromised; scammers may use that claim to obtain login or identity information. FBI warning about cryptocurrency recovery schemes.
- Preserve the evidence before deleting anything. Save the transaction hash, wallet addresses, token and platform names, amount and asset type, date and time, receipts, messages, emails, website addresses, usernames, phone numbers, and screenshots. Note how the first contact happened. Keeping these records can make reports more useful, but does not guarantee that funds will be recovered.
- Report the fraud. In the United States, submit a complaint to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI also lists a local field office as a reporting route. Include any later recovery-service or purported-lawyer contact in your report. Outside the United States, use your local law-enforcement and consumer-fraud reporting channels.
Can you get the crypto back?
There is no reliable way to promise that a particular transfer can be recovered. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as card payments and can be hard to get back. Contacting the exchange or ATM operator quickly is still worthwhile: ask whether it can take action, but do not treat that request as a likely or guaranteed refund.
An exchange may freeze an account under its internal processes or in response to legal process. A private recovery company cannot issue a seizure order. As the FBI puts it, “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” FBI public service announcement, August 11, 2023.

How to spot a second recovery scam
After an initial loss, victims may be targeted again by people posing as recovery firms, tracing experts, lawyers, government agents, or exchange representatives. Be wary of unsolicited contact, guaranteed recovery claims, requests for seed phrases or account credentials, demands for personal or banking information, and upfront fees or charges described as taxes or release costs.
