Tell a uniformed zoo employee, visitor-services worker, receptionist or security officer immediately that your group has separated. Give your name and description, what you were wearing, where and when you last saw the person, and where you are now. Follow that zoo’s instructions; procedures, phone numbers and lost-person locations differ by venue.
If you can safely call the missing person, try while alerting staff. Do not spend long searching alone, leave the zoo, or assume a public announcement will be made.
What to do immediately
- Stop in a safe, visible place. Move to a staffed entrance, information desk, exhibit gate, café counter or other public area. Avoid climbing barriers, entering restricted areas or wandering into isolated paths.
- Report the separation. Tell the first employee you find that a member of your party is missing. If no employee is visible, go to reception, visitor services or security, or use the zoo’s published visitor-assistance number.
- Give usable identifying information. State the person’s name, approximate age, height, clothing, hair, distinguishing features, mobility or medical needs, and whether they have a phone. Give the exact last-seen time and location, the direction they may have been walking, and your current location.
- Share a recent photo if available. A phone photograph can help staff recognize the person quickly. Keep your phone available for calls from staff or the missing person.
- Follow the venue’s plan. Staff may direct you to a security office, reception point, meeting place or another designated location. Stay reachable and do not duplicate a coordinated search unless staff ask you to.
North Carolina Zoo tells visitors with a separated party to contact uniformed staff or its Rangers department. Detroit Zoo instructs visitors to notify staff immediately about a missing child and identifies its Security Office as the lost-child location. Those examples illustrate why you should use the zoo’s own process rather than rely on a universal “lost and found” office.

Report a missing child without delay
Tell staff that the missing person is a child, then provide a concise description and last known location. Mention age, clothing, shoes, hair, any disability or medical condition, and whether the child knows your phone number. Ask where staff want you to wait and keep your phone audible.

Do not delay the report while checking every nearby exhibit. A zoo can coordinate employees, radios, entrances and security cameras more effectively when it receives the report immediately.
If you encounter a child who appears separated
Approach calmly, remain in a public area and contact zoo staff. Philadelphia Zoo’s Guest Experience Guide instructs staff to “Approach the child slowly and calmly.” Its procedure says to wait with the child for Public Safety and not pick up or restrain the child.
You can say, “You’re safe. I’m going to get a zoo employee to help,” while keeping an appropriate distance. Do not take the child to a car, restroom, exit or private location. Do not post the child’s photo or personal details online. If the child appears injured or in immediate danger, request emergency assistance from staff and follow their directions.
If you are the person who became separated
Stop rather than continuing to walk in the direction you think your group went. Go to a staffed, well-known point and explain that you are separated. Give the group leader’s name, your own name, the last place you saw them and any phone number you have. If you have a phone, call or message the group while you remain with staff.

For a young child, the safest instruction is simple: stop somewhere safe, approach zoo staff or reception and ask for help. Children should not leave the zoo grounds, cross parking areas alone or search for a parent through crowds.
What information staff will need
Organize the details before speaking so the report is clear:
- Missing person’s full name and preferred name.
- Age or approximate age, height and build.
- Clothing, shoes, hat, backpack and other visible items.
- Hair color and style, glasses, mobility aids, tattoos or other distinguishing features.
- Medical, communication or sensory needs that could affect the search.
- Last confirmed location, time seen and likely direction of travel.
- Your current location and a number on which staff can reach you.
- Names and descriptions of other group members who may be searching.
A short report is better than a vague statement such as “They were somewhere near the animals.” Name the exhibit, path, restroom, food outlet, bridge, entrance or landmark and give the closest time you can remember.

How zoo procedures differ
There is no single worldwide protocol. The contact route, designated waiting location, use of announcements, requested details and treatment of separated adults can all vary.

Numbers, departments and designated locations in this table apply only to the named venues. Check the specific zoo’s current visitor-information page before your trip and verify any phone number when you arrive.
What to do before the visit
Choose and explain a meeting point
Pick a recognizable, accessible location such as the main entrance information desk, a clearly named plaza or a visitor-services counter. Avoid choosing “the café” or “the lions” when there may be several paths or outlets. Show children the point on a map and repeat the plan when you enter.
Explain the fallback rule: if someone cannot see the group, they should stop, stay in a public place and ask a zoo employee or reception for help. They should not keep moving from exhibit to exhibit.
Prepare identification for young children
A name tag, card or ID wristband with a caregiver’s contact number can help staff reconnect a child with the right adult. Detroit Zoo recommends name tags for this purpose. Use only information you are comfortable displaying, and check that the number is current. Identification is an aid, not a substitute for supervision.

Set group roles and communication
For families, decide which adult reports to staff and which adult remains with other children. For school or organized groups, assign chaperones to defined subgroups, count children at transitions and tell every child the teacher’s name and contact number. Blackpool Zoo’s 2023 school and group guidance specifically recommends a sticker carrying the teacher’s name and a school contact number.
Check supervision rules
Requirements vary. Zoo Zurich says children under 12 may visit only with an adult, while North Carolina Zoo says children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Confirm the rule for the zoo, event and ticket type you are using; do not infer that one zoo’s age policy applies elsewhere.

Call or message the separated person if doing so is safe and likely to work. Give them a simple instruction to stop at the nearest staffed point and tell staff that your group is looking for them. Keep trying only while staff are coordinating; repeated calls should not replace a formal report.
A phone may be switched off, out of battery, out of coverage or with a child who cannot answer. Zoos may also have radio and camera procedures that visitors cannot access. Report the separation even if you believe the person will call back.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting to see whether the person returns. Early notification gives staff more time and better information.
- Searching alone in multiple directions. This can create more separated people and interfere with staff coordination.
- Assuming an announcement will be made. Some venues may avoid public announcements or use them only in specific circumstances.
- Going straight to an exit or car park. Stay in the location staff specify unless they direct you elsewhere.
- Moving a found child. Remain in a public area and wait for staff, as Philadelphia Zoo’s guidance states.
- Giving an imprecise description. “Blue shirt” is less useful than “bright blue hooded sweatshirt, black shorts, red trainers and a yellow backpack.”
- Publishing personal details online. Use the zoo’s official process instead of exposing a child’s identity or location.
A practical report script
You can say:
“I’m separated from my group and need help. The missing person is [name], approximately [age], wearing [clothing]. I last saw them at [specific location] at about [time], heading toward [direction]. I am now at [current location]. They have [phone or medical information]. My contact number is [number]. Where should I wait?”
If you found a child, say:
“I found a child who appears separated. We are at [public location]. The child is [brief description]. I have not moved or restrained the child. Please send staff.”
After reunification
Tell the employee who coordinated the response that the person has been found, so staff can stop searching and update any internal alerts. Move to your agreed meeting point, check every child or group member, and review what caused the separation while the details are fresh. For a school or organized group, record the incident according to the organizer’s safeguarding policy.
