Stop contact, move clear of the reef, and leave the coral and any loose pieces alone. Tell your boat or tour crew, site staff, or local marine authority what happened, where, and when. Don’t try to repair or reattach coral yourself: any intervention should be handled through authorized local restoration work.
What to do immediately
- Get clear of the reef. Stop kicking toward the coral, regain control of your buoyancy, and move into open water or over sand. Secure loose gear so it cannot brush the reef again. Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary advises divers and snorkelers to maintain buoyancy and keep equipment away from coral. Its guidance warns that “Even a minor brush with hands, fins, or gear can damage delicate coral animals.” If you are snorkeling, diving, or swimming, the goal is the same: make space without reaching for the reef or using it to steady yourself.
- Do not touch the coral or fragments again. Don’t pick up a broken piece, move it, or try to glue or reattach it. Coral fragments may be handled in authorized restoration operations, but that is not a visitor task. Even if a fragment looks easy to reposition, leave the decision to people authorized to assess it.
- Tell the responsible people promptly. Notify your boat or tour crew, site staff, or the local marine park authority. Give a straightforward account of what happened, the approximate time, and the location. If you do not know which authority handles incidents there, ask the crew or site manager. Reporting what you saw is more useful than guessing how badly the coral is injured.
- Document only from a safe distance. A photo may help show the location and visible damage, but do not return to the coral or disturb it to get a clearer picture. Skip the photo if taking it could cause another contact. You do not need a close-up or a definitive diagnosis to tell the responsible people what happened.
- Prevent a second contact. Keep hands, fins, equipment, and sediment away from the reef. Do not stand, kneel, or rest on coral while waiting or getting out of the water. Secure equipment and move over open water or sand rather than using coral as a handhold or resting place.
If the incident happened while you were swimming with a group, tell the guide or crew before leaving the site if you can do so safely. If you are already out of the water, share the same basic details with the operator or site staff. The first priority is to stop further contact; reporting and any safe documentation come after that.
Should you pick up or reattach a broken piece?
No. Leave the coral and any loose fragment where they are, and report what you saw. A visitor cannot reliably determine whether a piece is viable, how it should be positioned, or whether moving it could cause more damage. A fragment that appears detached is not an invitation to handle it, collect it, or take it away.
Restoration work is different from an improvised repair. On the Great Barrier Reef, the Marine Park Authority describes limited-term special permission for permit holders to flip or reattach corals in affected reef areas. That authorization is not permission for visitors to intervene. Tell the relevant local authority and let authorized personnel decide what, if anything, should be done.

This distinction matters even if you are trying to help. A person at the site may not know what local restoration rules apply or whether a particular intervention is appropriate. The safe comparison is not “repair it yourself” versus “leave it damaged”; it is “improvise as a visitor” versus “report it so the appropriate authority can decide whether authorized action is needed.”
How to report the incident
Reporting routes depend on where the contact happened. Start with the operator or site staff, who can point you to the appropriate park or marine authority. Give a factual description rather than trying to diagnose the coral’s condition. A useful report includes what happened, approximately when it happened, and where it happened. If you can describe the location more specifically without returning to the reef, do so. A distant photo can supplement the description, but it is not worth risking more contact.
There is no single reporting channel for every reef destination. Check the local route rather than assuming that a phone number or app used in one region applies elsewhere. If you are unsure which channel is right, ask the crew or site manager. Local rules, protected species, and reporting systems vary, so follow the directions given for that site.

In Southeast Florida, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection identifies the Southeast Florida Action Network (SEAFAN) as a channel for marine incident reports, including anchor damage, coral disease, and bleaching. The agency asks reporters to say what happened, when, and where. Miami-Dade County specifically directs reports of possible coral reef damage to SEAFAN online or by phone at 866-770-7335. For this region, the practical choice is between telling the operator or site staff and using the designated SEAFAN reporting route; those actions can complement one another. The operator can help identify the site and local process, while a SEAFAN report provides the incident details requested by Florida DEP. Do not treat the Miami-Dade phone number as a general reef hotline outside the county or Southeast Florida context.
Great Barrier Reef
For the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority says anyone may report an incident or coral damage through its Sightings app. Use the app to report what you observed; do not attempt the restoration actions reserved for authorized permit holders. The app is a region-specific reporting option, not a universal replacement for telling the crew or site staff. If an operator is present, tell them too, especially if you need help identifying the location or explaining what happened. The authority’s description of permitted restoration does not mean that anyone reporting damage should flip, move, or reattach coral.
Other destinations
Elsewhere, ask the crew, site manager, or local marine park authority how to report reef damage. Reporting systems and legal rules vary by jurisdiction, so a contact method or requirement used in one region may not apply in another. If you are not sure whether an incident should be reported, the guidance here supports reporting it factually and letting local staff decide what follow-up is appropriate.

Do not assume a particular legal outcome or penalty based on an accidental touch. The available guidance does not establish one universal rule for every destination. The useful steps are consistent even when the reporting channel is not: stop contact, leave the coral undisturbed, provide the location and approximate time, and follow local instructions.
If you were cut or stung
Some corals can sting, and many are sharp enough to cut skin. If you need to address your own safety, leave the water and seek local medical advice for a significant wound or concerning symptoms. The official reef guidance cited here does not set out a universal wound-care protocol, so avoid relying on a one-size-fits-all treatment recipe.
People and coral both need attention after an incident, but your immediate safety comes first. Do not stay in the water or return to the reef to inspect damage if you have been hurt and need help. Once you are safe, tell the crew or site staff what happened and where so they can direct you to local assistance and the relevant reporting channel.
Why even a brief touch matters
Coral is living reef habitat. Physical contact can damage coral and kill polyps; a hand, fin, or piece of equipment can injure delicate coral animals. NOAA also explains that impacts such as vessels striking reefs or people standing on them can crush coral and kill polyps. That does not mean every accidental touch causes irreversible harm: from a brief encounter, a visitor generally cannot judge the extent of damage. The useful response is to prevent further contact and report the incident, not to guess at the outcome.

There is no incident-specific estimate here for how much harm one accidental touch causes, and there is no basis for declaring that a particular piece is recoverable or beyond recovery. The possibility of damage is enough reason to stop, move clear, and leave any assessment to the appropriate people. Avoid both extremes: do not dismiss the contact as harmless, and do not assume you know the coral’s condition from a quick look.
For future dives and snorkels, keep enough distance to avoid contact even when adjusting position or handling equipment. Think ahead about buoyancy, fin movement, and where loose gear is hanging; if you need to change position, do it away from the reef rather than pushing off or holding on. NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries sums up the principle: “Take only pictures and leave only bubbles while diving or snorkeling!” Queensland Parks likewise advises: “The best practice is to look but don’t touch.”
