If UIDAI rejects a “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” submission, keep the myAadhaar reference and rejection message, then ask UIDAI for the specific reason and next step through an official grievance channel. Use the grievance portal with your EID, URN or SRN when available, call 1947, or email help@uidai.gov.in. If the response does not resolve the issue, escalate through UIDAI’s Regional Office, post, social-media or CPGRAMS channels.
Do not use this route to reactivate an Aadhaar belonging to a living person who was wrongly recorded as deceased. UIDAI has a separate reactivation procedure for that situation.
First identify which Aadhaar problem you have

This article addresses the first row. The second case is explained later so that a living person is not left without access while a family death report is being investigated.

What a rejected death report means
UIDAI’s 9 June 2025 launch announcement describes the myAadhaar service as “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” A family member authenticates and supplies the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number and demographic details. UIDAI then validates the information before deciding what action to take.
UIDAI’s wording is important: “After due process of validation of the information submitted by the family member, further action is taken for the deactivation, or otherwise, of the Aadhaar number of the deceased person.” A submission is therefore a report for review, not an automatic deactivation order. Rejection or another outcome can mean that validation did not establish the required match, that information needs correction, or that the service was not available for the relevant registration record.
Step 1: preserve the submission and rejection evidence
Before opening a complaint, collect the details that allow UIDAI to locate the transaction. Keep electronic copies and, if possible, a printed record in a secure folder.

- The myAadhaar submission confirmation, acknowledgement or reference number.
- The exact rejection text, status screen, email or SMS, including its date.
- The deceased person’s Aadhaar number and Death Registration Number, handled only through official UIDAI channels.
- The demographic details entered in the report and any spelling, date or number that may have been mistyped.
- The reporting family member’s authentication or complaint reference, such as an EID, URN or SRN, if one was issued.
- Relevant death-registration information that demonstrates the relationship between the registration record and the person reported.
Do not send Aadhaar details to an unverified agent or publish them on social media. Use only UIDAI’s official portal, telephone number, email address or office channels.
Step 2: ask UIDAI for the reason and the next action
UIDAI’s FAQ for a deactivated Aadhaar says a person may complain through the myAadhaar grievance portal using an EID, URN or SRN, or contact 1947 or help@uidai.gov.in. For a rejected family death report, explain that the complaint concerns the “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” service and include every submission reference available. Ask UIDAI to identify the failed validation or missing information and state exactly what should be corrected or resubmitted.
Use the myAadhaar grievance portal
- Open the grievance facility from the official myAadhaar site.
- Enter the EID, URN or SRN requested by the form, if your submission generated one.
- Select the issue that most closely describes a death report or deactivated Aadhaar. If no exact category exists, state the service name in the description.
- Write the submission date, the rejection wording, the deceased person’s Death Registration Number and the reference number. Ask for the reason and the next procedural step.
- Save the complaint number and acknowledgement after submission.
Call 1947
Call UIDAI’s 1947 contact centre when the portal cannot locate the submission, no reference was generated, or you need clarification before filing. UIDAI’s grievance page states that an executive is available Monday through Saturday from 7 AM to 11 PM and Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM; its IVRS is available 24 hours a day. Hours and contact arrangements can change, so verify the current information on UIDAI’s grievance page.

Have the submission and rejection details in front of you. Ask the representative to record the matter as a family-member death report, not as a request to deactivate a living person’s Aadhaar. Request the call or service reference for follow-up.

An email is useful when the rejection message is lengthy or you need to describe a mismatch. Put the service name and reference in the subject, explain the result in chronological order, and ask for a written reason and instructions. Include only the information UIDAI needs to identify the case; do not attach unrelated identity documents or send sensitive data to any other address.

Step 3: escalate if the first response does not resolve it
UIDAI’s “Grievance Redressal Mechanism” lists several routes in addition to the portal, phone and email:
- The concerned UIDAI Regional Office or State Office, including a walk-in where that office permits it.
- A written letter or post to the appropriate UIDAI office.
- UIDAI’s listed social-media grievance route.
- CPGRAMS, the Government of India’s public-grievance platform.
UIDAI says complaints are assigned to the relevant division or Regional Office for examination and communication. When escalating, attach or quote the earlier complaint number and explain what response was received. Ask the new channel to link the escalation to the existing case rather than opening several unrelated complaints.

For a postal or in-person submission, carry the original documents for inspection and provide copies only when requested. Keep the dispatch receipt, delivery confirmation, office acknowledgement and every subsequent reference.

The service launch announcement dated 9 June 2025 said that reporting was initially available for deaths registered in 24 States and Union Territories through the Civil Registration System, with integration for the remaining States underway. That announcement is a launch-status statement, not a current coverage list. Availability may therefore depend on the State or Union Territory and on how the death was registered.
If the form rejected the report before or during submission, ask UIDAI whether the relevant Civil Registration System record and State or Union Territory are supported. Confirm current availability on myAadhaar or through 1947 rather than assuming that the 24-State/UT launch scope still describes the present service.

Do not confuse this with wrongful deactivation of a living person
If the Aadhaar holder is alive, stop using the family death-report grievance as the only remedy. UIDAI Circular 02/2025, issued 7 July 2025, sets out a separate reactivation procedure.
Published reactivation route
- The living Aadhaar holder completes the prescribed reactivation application.
- The application is sent to the nearest UIDAI Regional or State Office by post, email or in person, using the method accepted by that office.
- The office examines the case and may call the holder to provide full biometrics at a designated Aadhaar centre.
- After biometric information is submitted, the concerned Regional or State Office communicates the disposal status within 30 days.
UIDAI’s circular states: “Regional Office/State Office concerned will inform the Aadhaar number holder about the status of disposal of the request within 30 days of submission of the biometric information.” This 30-day period applies only to the wrongly-deceased reactivation procedure. It is not a deadline for UIDAI to decide a rejected family death report, and it does not promise that a family report will be reversed.
What UIDAI’s published information does—and does not—promise
- It does provide official ways to ask about a deactivated Aadhaar or a related service transaction: the grievance portal, 1947, help@uidai.gov.in, Regional Offices, post, social media and CPGRAMS.
- It says a complaint is assigned for examination and communication by the appropriate division or Regional Office.
- It does not publish a dedicated appeal form specifically for a rejected “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” request in the material cited here.
- It does not state a rejection-specific filing deadline or guarantee that a grievance will reverse the validation result.
- It does not make submission itself proof that deactivation will occur; the service remains subject to validation and “deactivation, or otherwise.”
Accordingly, phrase your request as a demand for the reason, correction requirements and review of the record. Avoid telling banks, insurers or other institutions that UIDAI has deactivated the Aadhaar until UIDAI confirms the status.

Practical checklist before you close the case
- You have preserved the rejection message and every reference number.
- Your complaint names the exact myAadhaar service and distinguishes a deceased person from a living holder.
- You asked for the validation reason and a specific next step, rather than only requesting “deactivation.”
- You recorded the date, channel, representative or office and complaint number for each contact.
- You checked current service availability for the relevant State or Union Territory.
- You escalated with the original complaint reference if the first response was incomplete.
- You have not treated the 30-day reactivation communication period as a deadline for a family death report.
