Do not assume orbital debris caused the problem. A lost GPS position, a wrong map location and a satellite-internet outage are different failures with different checks. First identify which service is failing, document what happened, check the relevant status channel, and contact the correct provider or authority. Orbital debris can threaten spacecraft, but only an operator or official investigation can establish that it caused a particular outage.
“Space junk” is a possibility, not a diagnosis
Orbital debris is human-made material in orbit that no longer serves a useful purpose. It can collide with spacecraft or force them to maneuver, so it is a serious operator-level hazard. That definition does not make every household GPS error or satellite-internet interruption evidence of a debris strike. The official debris guidance from NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office focuses on preventing new debris, protecting spacecraft and coordinating collision-avoidance actions; it does not provide a consumer test for proving that debris caused an individual customer’s problem.
A disruption can instead originate with the receiver, the surrounding environment, radio interference, a satellite maneuver, a provider network, a home router or the map database used by an app. Treat “space junk” as an unconfirmed hypothesis until a responsible operator or government authority publishes a causal explanation.
First identify what actually failed
GPS positioning and satellite internet are separate services. A device can lose a reliable position while its internet connection works normally, and an internet terminal can be offline while a phone still obtains a GPS fix. Map directions add a third layer: an app can show a wrong address or route because its private-sector map data is wrong even when the underlying GPS signal is healthy.

What to do when GPS positioning is wrong or unavailable
1. Record the symptom before changing anything
Write down the date and time, your location, the affected device or receivers, and exactly what failed. Note whether the device showed no position, a drifting position, an incorrect time, intermittent fixes or an implausible jump. Preserve screenshots and receiver diagnostics if the equipment provides them. This information helps an authority distinguish a one-device fault from a geographically broader event.
2. Compare receivers and locations
If you have another GPS-capable device, test it during the same period. CISA notes that simultaneous loss across multiple receivers can be an indicator worth investigating, while also warning that interference diagnosis is complex. A single failing receiver points more strongly toward its antenna, firmware, power, design or local surroundings than toward an orbital event.
Repeat the test outdoors with as much open sky as possible. Buildings, bridges and trees can block signals; indoor and underground locations are especially difficult. Reflections from nearby structures can create multipath errors. A result that improves in open sky is evidence about the signal environment, not evidence of debris.

- Signal blockage from buildings, bridges, trees or terrain.
- Indoor or underground use.
- Reflected signals, known as multipath.
- Radio-frequency interference or jamming.
- Major solar storms or other space-weather effects.
- Satellite maintenance or maneuvers.
- Receiver design and limitations.
These causes can look similar to an outage on a consumer screen. A satellite maneuver, for example, may affect availability or geometry without involving debris. A receiver may also report a poor fix because its antenna has a clear hardware or installation problem.
4. Separate GPS errors from map errors
Check whether the device’s raw coordinates are wrong or whether the map has placed a correct coordinate on the wrong road, address or point of interest. GPS.gov cautions that missing roads, wrong addresses and bad directions can originate in private-sector mapping data. Report a mapping defect to the map-data company; report a loss of satellite signals to a navigation authority. They are different incidents.
5. Check official status information and report an anomaly
GPS.gov directs users to its GPS Service Outages & Status Reports guidance. Its instruction is direct: “If you experience a sudden loss of GPS satellite signals or other unusual behavior, please report it to the authorities using our GPS Service Outages & Status Reports page.”
For a civilian, non-aviation incident in the United States, the operational support channel linked by GPS.gov is the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN). Give NAVCEN the time, location, receiver information and observed behavior you recorded. U.S. civil-aviation users should use the Federal Aviation Administration’s support route instead. Readers outside the United States should contact the relevant national aviation, navigation or spectrum authority; the U.S. contacts do not replace local procedures.

If you suspect jamming or other radio interference
Interference is a serious possibility, but it is difficult to diagnose from a single consumer device. Look for a pattern: multiple receivers failing in the same area and time, abrupt onset, or recovery after leaving the location. Do not approach a suspected source or attempt to locate it yourself.
In the United States, report suspected illegal GPS jamming to NAVCEN and/or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). GPS.gov says jamming equipment is prohibited and can disrupt emergency and public-safety communications. Do not buy, build, test or operate a jammer, even as an experiment. A report with precise timing, location and receiver observations is safer and more useful than trying to investigate the radio source personally.
What to do when satellite internet is down
1. Identify which link is broken
Check whether the terminal has power and shows a normal equipment state, whether the local router or Wi-Fi is available, and whether any device can reach the provider’s service. If Wi-Fi works but the internet does not, the failure may be upstream of the home network. If the terminal itself is not responding, the problem may be local equipment, cabling, power or the provider’s access network. Use the status indicators and diagnostics supplied for your particular service.
2. Use the provider’s status and support channels
Satellite-internet services do not share a universal outage-reporting office. Consult your provider’s own status page, maintenance notices and support channel, then follow its equipment and connectivity troubleshooting. Tell support when the outage began, the service location, the terminal or account identifier requested by the provider, and whether all devices are affected. Ask whether the incident is a known network outage, planned maintenance, equipment fault or service-area issue.

The official sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a debris-specific end-user procedure or a single provider-independent hotline. A provider may later confirm a spacecraft or network cause, but a customer should not label the incident “space junk” before that confirmation.
3. Preserve useful evidence
Save status-page screenshots, terminal error messages, timestamps and any changes in connectivity. Note whether service returns briefly, whether only some applications fail, and whether a wired connection behaves differently from Wi-Fi. These details help the provider separate a satellite-link fault from a router or local-network problem.
4. Plan a temporary path without assuming automatic failover
NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation networking overview describes Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN): “DTN enables the use of multiple paths and providers to efficiently deliver data.” That is a NASA communications-network capability, not a guarantee that a household satellite service will reroute automatically. If connectivity is safety-critical, arrange an independently operated backup path according to your needs and local availability, and confirm how it is activated before an outage occurs.

Spacecraft operators track objects, design missions to reduce debris, maneuver when collision risk warrants it and protect systems against the space environment. NASA’s debris policy states that preventing the unnecessary creation of additional orbital debris is the most important action. Those measures happen at the spacecraft and mission-control level. A customer cannot inspect orbit, order a collision-avoidance maneuver or repair a damaged constellation from a home terminal.

NASA also explains that interference in space communications can cause missing or corrupted data, system failure or damage. That establishes why operators take interference and spacecraft hazards seriously, but it does not identify the cause of a particular consumer outage. Only a provider’s incident information or an official investigation can connect a service interruption to debris.

Claims and actions to avoid
- Do not treat a coincidence as causation. A GPS error occurring after news about a debris event does not establish that the event caused it.
- Do not report a map-data error as a satellite outage. Verify the raw position and the map record separately.
- Do not buy or operate a jammer. It is prohibited in the United States and can endanger emergency communications.
- Do not attempt to find a suspected interference source. Leave radio investigation to authorized authorities.
- Do not expect NASA’s DTN description to promise consumer failover. Multiple paths and providers are a networking concept, not a feature every retail service supplies.
- Do not assume there is a universal satellite-internet reporting office. Provider status and support procedures are service-specific.

Keeping this record prevents a vague “space junk caused an outage” report from obscuring the details that NAVCEN, the FCC, an aviation authority or an internet provider actually needs.
Bottom line
Start with the observable failure, not the suspected explanation. Test GPS in a clearer environment, compare receivers, separate map data from positioning, and report unusual civilian behavior to NAVCEN or the appropriate local authority. For satellite internet, use the provider’s status and support channels and preserve equipment diagnostics. Treat orbital debris as a real spacecraft risk but an unproven explanation for any individual household disruption until an operator or official source confirms the link.
