If someone is threatening you in person, get to a safer place and contact local emergency services when it is safe. Do not confront the person or make sudden moves that could increase the danger. Once you are safe, stop sending cryptocurrency, ignore new links or payment instructions, contact the exchange or crypto-ATM operator through an independently found official channel, preserve the transaction details, and report the coercion. A completed crypto transfer may not be reversible, but prompt reporting can help the operator and investigators assess what action is still possible.
Being pressured, blackmailed, or deceived into paying is not your fault. The right response depends on whether the threat is physical, a remote blackmail demand, or an impersonation scam.
First decide whether you are in immediate danger
Someone is physically present or threatening you now
Personal safety takes priority over your wallet, phone, and evidence. Move toward a safer location if you can do so without provoking the person. Contact your local emergency number, police, or a trusted person when doing so is safe. Do not argue, threaten the coercer, attempt to take back a device, or follow tactical advice that could escalate a face-to-face confrontation. Crypto guidance from U.S. agencies does not provide a special procedure for handling an armed or physically present coercer, so rely on local emergency and victim-support services for that situation.
The threat is remote
Remote threats include blackmail messages, fake support calls, and demands sent by email, text, social media, or a messaging app. Do not send another payment while deciding what to do. Do not click a new link, scan a QR code, install software, or “verify” your wallet at the request of the person contacting you.

Once you are safe, use this order of operations
- End the coercive interaction. Stop replying and do not negotiate through a channel controlled by the threat-maker. Save the conversation before blocking or deleting anything.
- Check whether a transfer is still pending. Open the exchange or wallet app directly, not through a link in a message. Record the status and transaction identifier. Do not assume a pending label means the funds can be recalled.
- Contact the service used to send the money. Use the phone number or website you locate independently. Tell the exchange or crypto-ATM operator that the payment was made under coercion or fraud, provide the transaction details, and ask what action is available.
- Secure accounts without destroying evidence. Change passwords from a trusted device if an account may be compromised, enable multifactor authentication, and revoke unfamiliar sessions or API keys. Keep copies of the original messages and account alerts.
- Report the incident. In the United States, submit an Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report and use the other agency channels that fit the conduct. Outside the United States, contact local police and your national cybercrime or consumer-protection authority.
Do not trust an “exchange employee” who demands crypto
A caller or message may claim that your account is frozen, your identity must be verified, or your funds need to be moved to a “safe” wallet. The FBI’s exchange-impersonation warning (August 1, 2024) says to end the interaction and contact the exchange independently. Never use a phone number, link, or website supplied by the caller, and never provide a password, login code, recovery phrase, or one-time passcode to that person.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also warns that legitimate businesses and government agencies do not demand cryptocurrency to protect your money or resolve a problem. Open the exchange’s official app or type its known web address yourself, then use its published support route. If the support representative asks you to send additional crypto to “unlock” or “recover” the first payment, stop and verify through a separate official channel.

Contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator promptly
Tell the operator exactly what happened: the payment was sent because of a threat, blackmail demand, or impersonation. Include the cryptocurrency, amount, destination address, date and time, transaction hash, and the account or ATM used. Ask whether the operator can flag the destination, hold a pending withdrawal, contact a receiving service, or provide instructions for law-enforcement requests. Those are requests, not promises. Cryptocurrency transfers are generally difficult or impossible to reverse.
The FTC advises asking the company used to send the cryptocurrency to reverse a fraudulent payment, while noting that crypto payments typically are not reversible. IC3 describes cryptocurrency transfers as irrevocable. A self-custody wallet normally gives you no intermediary that can cancel a broadcast transaction; an exchange or ATM operator may have internal controls, but it cannot guarantee a return.

Preserve evidence before it disappears
Make a copy of the information in a safe place. Do not edit screenshots or crop away dates, usernames, or URLs. Keep original emails and message exports when the platform allows it.
- Cryptocurrency type and exact amount.
- Sending and receiving wallet addresses.
- Transaction ID or hash, status, and date and time (include the time zone if known).
- Name of the exchange, wallet app, ATM operator, website, or other platform.
- Messages, emails, phone numbers, usernames, profile links, domains, and QR codes.
- Payment instructions, invoices, gift-card or cash instructions, and any one-time passcode or multifactor-authentication detail involved.
- A timeline showing the first contact, threats or instructions, each transfer, and later contact.
- Evidence of account access, such as login alerts, password-reset notices, or unfamiliar devices.
IC3 identifies the currency and amount, sending and receiving addresses, date and time, and transaction hash as key transaction details. It also asks how the contact began, which communication identifiers and domains were used, which apps or exchanges were involved, and what happened in sequence. If you cannot find the hash or another item, submit the report with what you do know rather than delaying.

Report a U.S. incident through the appropriate channels
The following are U.S.-specific routes. They do not replace emergency help and do not automatically apply in other countries.

IC3’s victim guidance dated August 24, 2023 states: “Do not wait. Go to www.ic3.gov and click on "file a complaint".” Submit the report even if the coercer used a foreign platform or the transfer crossed borders. IC3 notes that cross-border tracing can create additional challenges, but the public ledger may still provide useful investigative records.

What to expect from blockchain records and recovery
Public blockchains permanently record confirmed transactions. That record can help an exchange or law enforcement trace the movement of funds, but it does not guarantee that anyone will identify the recipient, freeze an account, or recover the money. A visible transaction is evidence, not proof that recovery is possible.
Do not pay a second person who promises certainty. The FBI’s recovery-scheme warning (August 11, 2023) describes operators who approach victims, charge an upfront fee, provide incomplete or inaccurate tracing, and then demand additional fees. Private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders. Exchanges freeze accounts through their own processes or in response to legal process, and law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate. Never send an unsolicited “recovery” contact more cryptocurrency, bank details, identity documents, or wallet credentials.
Blackmail and intimate-image threats
If someone threatens to publish intimate or compromising material unless you pay in cryptocurrency, treat it as criminal extortion. The FTC states: “This is blackmail and a criminal extortion attempt. Report it to the FBI immediately.” Preserve the threat, the account name, and the payment instructions. Do not bargain by promising a later payment; demands commonly continue after an initial transfer.

If you shared passwords or wallet credentials
A coercion incident may also expose unrelated assets. From a device you trust, change the affected email and exchange passwords, turn on multifactor authentication, and sign out unknown sessions. If a seed phrase or private key was revealed, treat that wallet as compromised and move any remaining funds to a newly created wallet only when doing so is safe and you understand the security implications. Do not send “test” funds to the old address and do not give the new recovery phrase to anyone claiming to help.
A short checklist for the next hour
- Reach safety and call local emergency services if there is immediate danger.
- Stop all further payments and stop following the coercer’s links, QR codes, and account instructions.
- Open the exchange or wallet directly and record the transaction status and hash.
- Contact the exchange or ATM operator independently and request available action.
- Copy messages, addresses, phone numbers, domains, receipts, and a time-ordered account.
- File the appropriate U.S. report through IC3, the FTC, or the FBI for blackmail; elsewhere, use local authorities.
- Ignore unsolicited recovery offers, upfront-fee demands, and anyone requesting your credentials.
If you are safe now, the most useful next move is prompt, independent contact with the service that handled the transfer and a complete report containing whatever evidence you have. If you are not safe, leave the crypto steps for later and get emergency help first.
