If someone has made, threatened to share, or posted a sexualized image of you without your consent, you are not to blame. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 in the United States or your local emergency number. Otherwise, focus first on safety, then report the image to the service hosting it. If you are in the U.S. and a covered platform does not act within 48 hours of your request, you can report the platform to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
What should you do first?
If someone is threatening you
Save the messages, account details, and any payment demands if you can do so safely. Report the account to the service where the threat was made, and consider asking someone you trust to help. A threat alone does not necessarily trigger the federal 48-hour removal process: that process concerns a request to a covered platform to remove an intimate image that has been shared.
Do not confront the person or pay an extortion demand as a default response. If the threat involves immediate physical danger, contact emergency services.
If the image is already online
If it is safe and not too distressing, record the post’s URL, the account name or handle, the date and time, and screenshots showing the content and context. Save related messages and any confirmation number from a report. Keep these records somewhere secure; do not repost the image to document it. Preserving evidence can help, but it is not a prerequisite to asking a platform to remove content.

How do you ask a platform to remove the image?
- Find the service hosting the content. Use its report function or dedicated form for nonconsensual intimate imagery, sexual exploitation, or a similar category.
- Identify the specific material. Include the post URL or other location details, account name, and a concise explanation that the image is intimate and was shared without your consent. If the image is manipulated or AI-generated, say so.
- Report each location separately. If copies appear on more than one service, submit a report to each service hosting a copy.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the report reference number, submission date, and any response. If there is no exact reporting category, RAINN advises selecting the closest relevant option and explaining what happened.
Platform policies and report forms can change, so use the service’s own current reporting page. A platform report seeks action on particular content; it is different from a request to limit matching re-uploads through an image-hashing service.

What does the U.S. 48-hour rule cover?
The TAKE IT DOWN Act is a U.S. federal law, Public Law 119-12, enacted May 19, 2025. FTC guidance published in September 2026 says covered platforms must provide a way to report intimate images shared without consent, including deepfakes, and must remove the reported images and copies within 48 hours of a request.

What if the platform does not remove it?
If the content remains 48 hours after you requested removal from a covered platform, you can report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC complaint is about the platform’s compliance; it is not an emergency service and does not directly remove the image for you. FTC guidance says it does not promise status updates and is generally unable to enforce against platforms outside U.S. jurisdiction.
If you are outside the United States, the TAKE IT DOWN Act and FTC escalation process may not apply. Use the platform’s reporting process and consult official reporting channels or a specialist service in your country; laws and remedies vary by location.

Can an image-hashing tool help?
Image hashing can complement a direct platform report. It creates a digital fingerprint of an image so participating services can look for matching material. In the hashing processes described by RAINN and the FTC, the image itself is not uploaded. These tools do not search the entire internet, guarantee removal, or replace reporting the specific post.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool | When it fits | What it does and its limits |
|---|---|---|
| StopNCII | For adults depicted in the image. | Uses a digital fingerprint to help participating platforms identify matching material. RAINN says coverage is limited to participating platforms and matching works best for exact copies; it does not establish universal coverage. |
| NCMEC’s Take It Down | For an image or video taken or created when the depicted person was under 18, even if that person is now an adult. | Uses a digital fingerprint to help participating platforms identify matching material. It is not a universal web search or guaranteed removal mechanism. |
RAINN notes that hashing is strongest for exact matches. A crop, edit, or AI alteration may need a separate hash if you have access to that altered file. Most encrypted messaging services are not covered, and some participating services scan only public or unencrypted areas. Hashing an ordinary photo also cannot prevent someone from using that photo later to create a new deepfake.

What if the image involves someone under 18?
Do not download, forward, or circulate a sexual image of a minor, including an image of yourself when you were under 18. RAINN says sexualized imagery involving someone under 18 is child sexual abuse material, even if the person depicted is now an adult. RAINN directs people to report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline. NCMEC’s Take It Down is intended for images or videos taken when the person was under 18.
You can report the material to the platform without sending it to other people. If you are unsure how to make a report safely, a trusted adult or support service can help.
Where can you get confidential support?
RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers free, confidential support 24/7/365 in English and Spanish, according to its guidance accessed October 9, 2026. You can call 800-656-HOPE (4673), text HOPE to 64673, or chat through RAINN.org/hotline.
