Remove the smart contact lens immediately, leave it out, and contact an eye-care professional promptly. Store the removed lens in its case and take it with you; do not put it back in simply because the discomfort improves.

Do this first

Eye irritation or a change in vision while wearing any contact lens is a safety issue, whether the lens has electronics, sensors, a display, or no smart functions at all. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises removing a lens immediately when irritation or infection symptoms occur and not putting it back in your eye.

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Use soap and clean water, then dry with a lint-free towel before touching the lens or your eye.
  2. Remove the lens. Do not continue wearing it to see whether the image clears or the irritation settles.
  3. Leave the lens out. Put it in its normal storage case with the appropriate fresh solution. Do not reinsert it, even if symptoms ease after removal.
  4. Call an eye-care professional promptly. Tell the office that you had a vision change or irritation while wearing a contact lens and describe the symptoms.
  5. Take the lens and case to the appointment. The lens may help the clinician identify a fit, surface, contamination, or material problem.
  6. Follow the clinician’s instructions. Do not restart lens wear or add a new eye product until you have been told that it is appropriate.

FDA consumer guidance specifically says to take out contact lenses and call an eye doctor right away for vision changes, red eyes, eye pain or itchiness, or a lot of tears. This advice applies to symptoms that occur with a smart lens because the immediate hazard is to the eye, not to the lens’s electronics.

When symptoms need urgent professional care

Contact an eye-care professional as soon as possible for any new irritation or blurred vision. Seek urgent professional care when pain is significant, vision is reduced or worsening, or the eye has marked redness, light sensitivity, discharge, or swelling. Do not wait for a home test to determine whether the problem is serious.

Symptom What to do Why it matters
Blurred, hazy, distorted, decreased, or otherwise changed vision Keep the lens out and arrange prompt evaluation; use urgent care for substantial or worsening loss of vision. Vision change is a listed contact-lens complication and can progress quickly.
Eye pain, persistent burning, gritty sensation, or severe itching Do not rub the eye or reinsert the lens. Contact an eye-care professional promptly. Pain and persistent irritation can accompany conditions that require examination.
Unusual redness, heavy tearing, discharge, or swollen eyelids Arrange prompt evaluation and mention every symptom when calling. These are possible signs of irritation or infection.
Unusual sensitivity to light Keep the eye free of the lens and seek urgent professional advice, especially with pain or reduced vision. Light sensitivity is among the warning symptoms identified by FDA guidance.
Symptoms that continue after removal or return later Obtain professional assessment rather than trying the lens again. Removal does not establish the cause or prove that the eye is safe.

These signs cannot tell you at home whether the cause is a damaged lens, an abrasion, inflammation, infection, or another problem. FDA warns that contact-lens complications can develop quickly; an eye-care professional must determine their seriousness. Potential hazards include infection and corneal ulcers, and rare severe cases can threaten sight.

How to handle the removed lens safely

Use the case, not a tissue or tap water

Keep the lens in its proper case so the clinician can inspect it. Do not put it on a tissue, rinse it under a tap, or store it in drinking water. Water can carry organisms and is not a substitute for sterile lens solution.

Do not improvise a cleaning solution

Follow the lens and solution labels exactly. FDA guidance says not to expose contact lenses to water, reuse or “top off” old solution, or use non-sterile water or homemade saline. If you cannot safely store the lens according to its instructions, tell the clinic what happened rather than experimenting with a substitute.

Do not medicate the eye on your own

Ask an eye-care professional before using a new medicine or topical eye product. A product that temporarily reduces redness or discomfort can obscure important symptoms, and a product suitable for one lens or eye condition may be unsuitable for another. Do not borrow someone else’s drops or use leftover prescription medicine.

If the eye feels better after you remove the lens

Improvement is useful information to report, but it is not clearance to resume wear. A lens can irritate the eye through fit, surface damage, deposits, contamination, or an interaction with the eye’s tear film. The underlying problem may remain after the lens is removed. Keep the lens out, document when symptoms started and improved, and follow the professional’s advice before wearing any contact lens again.

If symptoms return without the lens, become more intense, or include reduced vision, pain, marked redness, discharge, swelling, or light sensitivity, escalate the request for care rather than observing the eye at home.

Why “smart” does not change the first-aid response

“Smart contact lens” is a broad term. It can describe proposed or research devices with displays, sensors, wireless links, or other components, rather than one standardized consumer product. The evidence available for this question does not identify your model, its instructions for use, or its regulator record. That is why general FDA contact-lens safety guidance is the appropriate immediate response.

Do not try to repair, recalibrate, charge, pair, reset, or adjust a smart lens while it is in your eye. Electronics troubleshooting cannot determine whether the cornea is injured or whether an infection is developing. Remove the lens first; only after an eye-care professional says the eye is healthy should you consult the device’s actual manufacturer instructions for technical questions.

Understanding the FDA listing resource

FDA explains that its U.S. website links to contact lenses that have been reviewed and released for sale in the United States. That list is a regulatory resource, not a complete worldwide inventory and not proof that every device absent from it is unsafe or unavailable. A model-specific question should be checked against the exact product documentation and the relevant regulator’s record.

A dated example is not a current product directory

In a January 6, 2023 company announcement, Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins wrote, “This change means that Mojo Vision has also made the difficult decision to decelerate work on Mojo Lens,” and stated that the lens had not shipped. That statement concerns Mojo Lens at that date only. It does not establish the current status of every smart-lens project worldwide, and it does not change the safety steps for a lens that is already in your eye.

Common mistakes that can make the problem worse

  • “I will wear it for a few more minutes.” Continued wear adds exposure while the cause is unknown.
  • “It is only a display glitch.” Blur can be an eye symptom, not a software or alignment problem.
  • “Rinsing with tap water is harmless.” FDA specifically advises avoiding water and non-sterile liquids.
  • “Fresh solution can be poured on top of old solution.” Top-off practices do not replace the labeled cleaning and disinfection routine.
  • “Redness drops will solve it.” New medicines and topical products should be cleared with an eye-care professional.
  • “The lens looks normal, so the eye is normal.” A visual inspection cannot rule out a corneal or infectious problem.
  • “I can use the other eye’s lens.” Do not substitute another lens or pair until a professional has advised you.

After you are cleared to wear lenses again

Resume contact-lens use only when the eye-care professional gives you a plan. Follow the exact wearing time, replacement schedule, cleaning method, and storage instructions for that device. Use only the solution specified for the lens, keep the case clean and replaced as directed, and keep lenses away from water. If the professional identifies a device, fit, material, or handling problem, follow the corrective action rather than trying to compensate by wearing the lens for shorter periods on your own.

Ask specifically whether the smart lens requires additional precautions for charging, pairing, firmware updates, sensor calibration, or removal. Those technical steps are device-specific and should never override basic eye-safety instructions.

The practical decision rule

Situation Safe next step
Any irritation or new blur while the lens is in Remove it immediately, leave it out, store it in its case, and contact an eye-care professional.
Mild symptoms that improve after removal Still obtain professional advice before reinsertion; improvement does not diagnose the cause.
Significant pain, reduced or worsening vision, pronounced redness, discharge, swelling, or light sensitivity Seek urgent professional care and report the full symptom set.
Uncertainty about the smart-lens model or instructions Use general contact-lens safety steps first, then provide the exact device information to the clinician.

The key action is simple: a smart lens is still a contact lens in contact with a sensitive eye. Remove it at the first sign of irritation or vision change, avoid improvised treatments, preserve the lens for examination, and obtain professional guidance before wearing it again.
