Do not panic, but do act. A Shodan result proves that a service answered from your public IP address when Shodan scanned it; it does not, by itself, prove that anyone entered your network. First confirm that the address is still yours, identify the device behind the port, remove any unnecessary Internet exposure, and then verify the fix with a fresh outside scan.
What a Shodan result actually tells you
Shodan records Internet-facing responses. Its page for an address can include open ports, protocol details, service banners, software versions, web technologies and vulnerability references. The finding means that a connection from the public Internet reached that service at the scan time. It is evidence of exposure, not evidence of a successful intrusion.
Exposure still matters. Automated scanners continuously look for reachable services, and an unpatched or weakly authenticated service can be attacked without any warning. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance (2025) warns that organizations often leave weaknesses exposed and thereby make themselves easier targets. The same principle applies to a home network.
Severity cannot be judged from the port number alone. The actual service, software version, authentication, patch status, configuration and reason it is reachable determine the risk. A stale banner can also remain in Shodan after you change a setting, so treat the listing as a lead to investigate and confirm the current state independently.
Do these checks first
- Confirm ownership and freshness. Compare the IP in Shodan with the WAN or Internet address shown in your router’s status page or by your Internet provider. Record Shodan’s scan time. Residential addresses are often dynamic; an address that was yours yesterday may later be assigned to another subscriber.
- Write down the evidence. Save the port number, protocol, banner text, hostname, detected device and scan date. This gives you a before-and-after record and helps distinguish a router service from a forwarded host.
- Do not assume the router owns the port. A port-forwarding rule may send traffic to a camera, NAS, game server, remote-desktop computer or another device on the LAN. Check both the router’s forwarding table and its connected-device list.
If the address no longer belongs to you, do not try to change the current subscriber’s equipment. If it is yours, continue with the service investigation.
Find which device and service are exposed
Inspect the router
Sign in to the router’s local administration page and look for menus named Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, NAT, Applications or Firewall. Record each rule’s external port, internal address, protocol (TCP or UDP) and destination device. Review the connected-device or DHCP-client list to match that address to a hostname or hardware address.

Check the endpoint
On the destination device, identify the application listening on the port and its installed version. A camera, storage appliance, smart-home hub or game server may advertise a vendor banner even though the router is only forwarding traffic. Check the device’s own remote-access, cloud-relay and account settings. If you cannot identify a rule or a device, temporarily disable the suspected forwarding rule and see whether a controlled external check changes; avoid experimenting by exposing additional ports.

Ask whether anyone in the household genuinely needs the service reachable directly from the Internet. CISA’s Stuff Off Shodan: How-to Guide frames the decision with a basic question: “Why does this system and service need to be running?” A service used only inside the home normally should not have a public forwarding rule.
Close ports you do not need
- In the router, delete or disable the matching port-forwarding, virtual-server or NAT rule. Save or apply the configuration.
- On the destination device, turn off its remote-access or Internet-sharing feature. If the application is not needed at all, uninstall it or stop its service.
- Disable automatic port mapping if you do not rely on it. In most routers this is the UPnP setting; applications can otherwise recreate forwarding rules without an obvious manual change.
- Check the router again after a few minutes and after a reboot. Confirm that the rule has not returned and that the device’s local firewall is enabled.
- Keep a backup of the corrected configuration only after you have verified it. A backup made while the insecure rule is present can restore the exposure accidentally.
Closing a forwarding rule prevents unsolicited inbound connections from reaching that internal host, but it does not repair vulnerable software or compromised credentials. Patch and secure the device as a separate step.
Interpret the port and banner carefully
| Finding | What it commonly indicates | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| 80 or 443 | A web interface or web server | Confirm that publication is intentional, update the software, require authentication, and prefer HTTPS with a valid certificate. Remove the forwarding rule if the interface is for local use only. |
| 22 (SSH) | Remote command-line administration | Close it unless remote shell access is essential. If it must remain, restrict allowed source addresses, use key-based authentication and MFA where supported, disable password login where practical, and keep the host patched. |
| 3389 (RDP) | Windows Remote Desktop | Treat direct Internet exposure as high risk. Remove the forwarding rule and use a VPN or another controlled remote-access design instead. |
| 445 (SMB) or 23 (Telnet) | File sharing or plaintext remote login | Close these on a home Internet connection unless there is an exceptional, documented need. CISA identifies insecure and plaintext services as services to disable or restrict. |
| Camera, NAS, smart-home or game-server banner | A specific appliance or hosted application behind the router | Identify the exact device, change default credentials, install current firmware, and decide whether a vendor relay or VPN can replace direct inbound access. |
A familiar port is not automatically safe, and an unfamiliar high-numbered port is not automatically malicious. Read the banner, verify the listening process and compare the software version with the vendor’s security information before deciding.
Harden a service that must stay reachable
Reduce who can connect
Use the router or host firewall to allow only known source networks or addresses. If your remote users have changing addresses, place access behind a VPN or a managed jump host rather than opening a broad rule to the entire Internet. Do not expose an administration panel when a safer authenticated access path is available.

Fix authentication and software hygiene
- Replace factory usernames and passwords with unique, long credentials.
- Enable MFA when the device or service supports it.
- Install current router firmware, operating-system updates and application patches.
- Remove unused accounts, plugins and services.
- Review the service’s encryption settings and use HTTPS or another encrypted protocol where available.
If a device no longer receives security updates, plan to retire it rather than relying on a port change or an obscure external port. Changing the number alone does not remove the underlying vulnerability.
Secure the router itself
The Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, unique administrator and Wi‑Fi credentials, current router software, an enabled firewall and a guest network. Apply those controls even when the exposed port belongs to another device, because the router controls the boundary and can be used to alter forwarding rules.
- Turn off remote management unless you have a specific, secured reason to use it.
- Turn off WPS and UPnP when they are not required.
- Use a separate guest network for visitors and less-trusted smart devices.
- Change the router’s administrator password from a trusted device and do not reuse it on another account.
- Replace a router that cannot support WPA2 or WPA3, lacks a usable firewall, or no longer receives security updates.
When evaluating a replacement, check WPA3/WPA2 support, the vendor’s security-support horizon and automatic updates, firewall and logging controls, the ability to disable remote management, WPS and UPnP, MFA or certificate support, guest-network and device-segmentation features, safe configuration restore, and total cost.

Check whether there are signs of compromise
An open port is not proof of a breach, and there is no authoritative percentage that converts a residential Shodan finding into a probability of compromise. Look for evidence instead:
Recommended Free Tools
- Router or device logs showing unfamiliar logins, repeated authentication failures or configuration changes.
- New administrator accounts, unknown forwarding rules or settings you did not create.
- Malware or endpoint-security alerts.
- Unexpected outbound traffic, unexplained bandwidth use or devices contacting unfamiliar destinations.
- Changed passwords, disabled security controls or files altered without explanation.
If credentials may have been exposed, change them from a trusted, updated device. Use a unique password for every service and revoke unknown sessions or keys. Isolate a suspect device from the network while you preserve relevant logs and follow the device maker’s recovery procedure. A factory reset may be appropriate, but only after you know how to reinstall supported firmware and restore a clean configuration.
Verify that the exposure is gone
- Wait for the router and endpoint changes to take effect, then confirm locally that the service is stopped or reachable only on the LAN.
- Use an external network, such as a mobile connection or another location, to test only the ports you intended to publish. Testing from inside your own network can be misleading because some routers support local loopback while others do not.
- Run a fresh external scan or use Shodan’s on-demand scan capability where available. Check that unwanted ports are closed and that intended banners no longer disclose obsolete versions or default services.
- Compare the new result with the saved evidence. Shodan’s existing page may still show an older scan; a timestamped fresh check is the meaningful confirmation.
Do not scan other people’s addresses or devices. Limit testing to an IP address and systems you own or are explicitly authorized to assess.

Keep the result from returning
Review the router’s forwarding table after firmware updates, device replacements and troubleshooting sessions. UPnP-enabled applications can recreate rules, and a factory reset can restore vendor defaults. Keep a simple inventory of Internet-facing services, destination devices, software versions, owners and the reason each rule exists.
For a changing residential IP, a domain-based monitoring service can be more useful than watching one numeric address. Shodan Monitor can alert on new services, malware, open databases, vulnerable services, expired SSL and other triggers. Configure alerts for the domain or monitored asset you control, and investigate every new exposure rather than dismissing it as a scanner artifact.

Contact your Internet provider when the address, modem or router ownership is unclear, or when the provider controls the gateway settings. Seek a qualified security professional if logs suggest unauthorized access, a device cannot be updated or reset safely, or the household depends on a service that must remain publicly reachable. Preserve timestamps, banners, router logs and configuration changes so the helper can reconstruct what happened.
