If Quick Start seems stuck, first check whether anything on either screen is still changing. Apple does not specify a time limit that means a transfer has failed: duration varies with network conditions and the amount of data. Keep the old iPhone connected to Wi-Fi with Bluetooth on, place both iPhones close together, and leave them plugged into power. If the setup prompt has disappeared from the old iPhone, restart both devices and begin again.
Check whether the transfer is actually stuck
Look at the screens on both phones before interrupting setup. If a progress indicator or displayed status is changing, let the transfer continue. Apple says transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data being moved; it does not give a standard completion time or a timeout that proves a transfer has frozen. Apple Support explains the timing factors in its Quick Start instructions.
During a direct Quick Start migration, both devices remain occupied until the transfer finishes. Keep them close together and connected to power rather than switching to other setup steps while migration is underway.

Check the Quick Start connection conditions
- On the current iPhone, confirm Wi-Fi is connected and Bluetooth is turned on.
- Keep the two iPhones near each other throughout the transfer.
- Connect both phones to power and leave them connected while migration runs.
These are the conditions Apple specifies for Quick Start; they are the useful first checks when progress appears slow.

If the setup prompt disappears, restart both iPhones
If the prompt to set up the new iPhone disappears from the current iPhone, Apple’s instruction is to restart both devices. After they restart, bring them together and start the setup process again. This restart guidance applies to the missing-prompt situation; Apple does not present it as a universal fix for every frozen progress screen.
Choose another supported way to move your data
If another direct transfer cannot be completed, Apple also supports restoring from an iCloud backup, restoring a computer backup, or transferring data with a cable. Choose based on whether you have a suitable backup, whether the iPhone models support the same wired connection, and whether you need to use the new phone while data downloads.

Changing methods is not a guarantee of a faster copy; it gives you another supported route when direct migration is not working for your situation. Apple describes the options in its guide to transferring data to a new iPhone or iPad.

- For an iPhone 14 or earlier transferring to an iPhone 15 or later, Apple specifies a USB-C to Lightning cable.
- For an iPhone 15 or later transferring to another iPhone 15 or later, Apple specifies a USB-C Charge Cable.
Other older-device combinations can require different cables or adapters. Check both model generations and their ports against Apple’s wired transfer instructions before connecting the phones.
Check whether the new iPhone is organization-managed
If the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business, Apple says Quick Start cannot transfer data from the current device. Contact the school or organization administrator for the setup method available to you. Apple’s Quick Start guidance lists this eligibility restriction.

When to contact Apple Support
If the setup prompt is present but the progress screen remains unchanged after checking the stated connection conditions, Apple’s published guidance does not establish a universal timeout or a guaranteed remedy for that persistent screen. Avoid treating elapsed time alone as proof of failure or following an unverified reset sequence. If the supported backup or wired options are not suitable, contact Apple Support for help with the specific devices and screen state.
