If a test finds PFAS in your drinking water, do not panic and do not assume boiling will make it safe. First confirm which compounds were measured, the concentration, sampling date, laboratory method and applicable comparison level. Until a public-health or water professional interprets the result, use a known-safe source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and preparing infant formula. Then choose treatment that is specifically certified for PFAS, install it for the part of the plumbing that needs protection, and replace cartridges or membranes on schedule.

What a PFAS result does—and does not—tell you

PFAS is a large family of human-made chemicals, not one substance with one treatment performance or one health threshold. A laboratory report may list individual compounds, such as PFOA or PFOS, as well as a total concentration. The number is meaningful only with its units, detection limit, sampling location, collection date and the comparison level used by your state or federal authorities.

A detected result is not the same as an individual medical diagnosis. Risk depends on the specific compounds, concentration, duration and other exposure routes. The official sources summarized here do not provide one bottled-water duration, epidemiologic risk percentage or universal blood level that can be applied to every household. Ask a health department or clinician about personal health concerns rather than trying to infer a diagnosis from a water report.

Take these actions first

  1. Identify who supplied the result. Determine whether the sample came from a public utility or a private well. Ask for the PFAS names, concentration and units, sampling date and location, laboratory method, detection limits and the state or federal comparison level being used.
  2. Contact the right authority. Public-water customers should start with their utility. Private-well owners should contact their state or local environmental or health agency for interpretation and next steps.
  3. Use a safer source while the result is being clarified. If concern remains, use bottled water or another verified-safe source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, preparing infant formula and any activity in which water could be swallowed. Follow local instructions for bathing, laundry and other uses; there is no universal rule that every household must stop using tap water for those purposes.
  4. Arrange qualified follow-up testing. A new sample should be analyzed by a state-certified laboratory using EPA-developed drinking-water methods. Keep the report, chain-of-custody record, sampling date and detection limits.
  5. Select and maintain treatment based on the measured PFAS. Relevant technologies include granular activated carbon, ion-exchange resin and reverse osmosis. Buy only a model with a specific independent PFAS-reduction certification claim, then replace cartridges or membranes at the rated interval.

EPA’s consumer guidance says, “If possible, consider using an alternate water source for drinking, preparing food, cooking, brushing teeth, preparing baby formula, and any other activity when your family might swallow water.” That is a precaution while the result and remedy are being evaluated, not a universal prediction about how long every household must avoid its tap.

Public utility or private well: who does what?

Situation Where the data usually come from Who provides next steps Important responsibility
Public water system Utility monitoring, a utility sample or an agency investigation Start with the water utility; involve the state or local health or environmental agency if directed Ask which PFAS were found, how the result compares with the applicable standard or advisory, and whether the utility is changing treatment or sampling.
Private well Your own laboratory sample, a state program or an investigation of a nearby source State or local environmental and health agencies EPA does not regulate private wells or set recommended private-well standards. The owner must arrange testing, treatment, maintenance and retesting.

A utility result may represent a regulated system with ongoing monitoring, while a well result may represent one point in one household’s plumbing. Do not transfer a public-system conclusion to a private well, or vice versa, without confirming the sampling design and authority responsible for the source.

How to confirm a PFAS result

Review the original report

Request the complete laboratory report rather than relying on a headline number. Confirm the individual PFAS analytes, units such as parts per trillion, laboratory method, reporting limits, quality-control notes, sampling point and date. Ask whether the sample was taken before or after any existing filter. A sample after treatment cannot establish the untreated source concentration.

Use a qualified laboratory for new samples

EPA advises that people who test their own water should use a state-certified laboratory using EPA-developed testing methods. Before collecting, ask the laboratory for its approved container, preservatives, sampling instructions and shipping window. Record the sampler, date, time, location and whether treatment was operating. Preserve the chain-of-custody paperwork so the result can be traced from collection to analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a home screening kit as definitive

A home kit without appropriate laboratory confirmation should be considered a screening indication, not proof of compliance or proof that water is free of PFAS. If a kit reports a concern, submit a properly collected sample to a qualified laboratory and ask the agency how to interpret both results.

Can you still drink the tap water?

There is no single yes-or-no answer without the compound, concentration, sampling context and applicable local comparison level. If a utility or health agency has issued an advisory, follow it. If you have a private well and a concerning result but no immediate agency instruction, use a verified-safe source for ingestion while arranging professional interpretation and treatment.

Do not boil water to remove PFAS. PFAS are not removed by ordinary boiling, and evaporation can increase the concentration of nonvolatile contaminants left in the remaining water. Boiling is therefore not a substitute for certified treatment. Ask local officials whether bathing, laundry or other contact uses require restrictions; do not invent a universal restriction based only on a detected result.

Choose treatment for the water you actually need

Point-of-use treatment

A point-of-use device treats water at one tap, commonly the kitchen faucet or a dedicated drinking-water dispenser. It is often the practical first response when the main exposure route is ingestion through drinking and food preparation. A smaller device can reduce the amount of water that must pass through treatment, but every unfiltered tap remains untreated.

Whole-house treatment

Whole-house, or point-of-entry, treatment processes water as it enters the building. It may be appropriate when the contaminant profile or local advice indicates a need to address multiple outlets, or when household water use makes a single drinking tap impractical. It requires a correctly sized system, space, plumbing changes, scheduled media replacement and a plan for spent media or reject water. Treating every gallon can cost more than protecting only drinking and cooking water.

Consideration Point of use Whole house
Scope One faucet or dispenser; untreated taps remain unchanged All or most incoming water, if the system is correctly installed
Best fit Ingestion is the primary concern and a kitchen tap is convenient Multiple outlets need treatment or agency advice calls for building-wide control
Installation Usually simpler; may use a dedicated faucet or under-sink plumbing Requires sizing, a main-line installation and space for vessels, drains or tanks
Maintenance Cartridge or membrane changes at a defined capacity or time Media, prefilters, membranes, valves and waste handling may all require service
Cost information from EPA guidance Home filters overall: about $20 to more than $1,000, excluding maintenance; reverse-osmosis point-of-use systems: about $150 to $1,000, excluding maintenance Not stated as a single figure; capacity and plumbing requirements vary substantially

Compare the main treatment technologies

Technology How it is used Key strengths Limitations to plan for
Granular activated carbon (GAC) Water passes through carbon media that adsorbs many PFAS compounds Can be used in point-of-use or larger systems and does not inherently create a concentrated reject stream like RO Performance varies by PFAS compound, media, contact time and competing contaminants. Media must be replaced before exhaustion.
Ion-exchange resin Resin captures charged contaminants as water flows through a treatment bed Can provide high-capacity treatment when correctly selected and sized Capacity and breakthrough depend on the resin and water chemistry; spent resin or regeneration waste needs proper handling.
Reverse osmosis (RO) A membrane separates water under pressure; treated water is collected and a reject stream is discharged Useful for point-of-use drinking water and can reduce a broad range of dissolved contaminants Requires pressure, pretreatment and membrane replacement. It wastes some feed water and needs a drain or storage tank.

EPA identifies GAC, ion exchange and RO as relevant PFAS technologies, but no method is universally best. The measured compounds, concentration, flow rate, household demand, incoming-water chemistry and plumbing determine the design. A device that performs well for one PFAS profile may have different capacity or breakthrough behavior for another.

Verify certification before buying a filter

Look for an independent claim specifically stating PFAS reduction, not merely words such as carbon, purifier or removes chemicals. For a carbon or other non-RO device, check for a claim under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFAS reduction. For reverse osmosis, check NSF/ANSI 58. Then search the exact model number and the exact PFAS claim in the certifier’s directory. EPA identifies five ANSI-accredited third-party certification organizations for this evaluation: NSF, WQA, IAPMO, CSA and UL.

Certification is evidence of testing to a defined protocol; it is not a promise that every PFAS compound will be eliminated under every household condition. EPA noted in April 2024 that the standards then discussed had not yet demonstrated removal down to the newer federal drinking-water standard levels. Check the current claim, rated capacity and test conditions, and ask the agency whether the performance is adequate for your measured concentration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe any manufacturer or model as EPA-approved. EPA publishes guidance and regulatory information; it does not turn a commercial filter into a universally approved product merely because PFAS is mentioned on the packaging.

Install, monitor and replace the system

  1. Match the rating to the water. Confirm the device’s certified PFAS claim, rated flow, capacity and allowable pressure. For RO, verify the required pressure, pretreatment and drain connection.
  2. Record the baseline. Write down the installation date, meter reading or estimated gallons, model number and cartridge or membrane lot information.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule. Replace media at the stated time or capacity, whichever comes first. EPA warns that filters are effective only when maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions and that an overdue filter can increase PFAS exposure.
  4. Prevent bypass. Ensure the cartridge is seated correctly, dedicated faucets are not accidentally connected around the filter and automatic valves are functioning.
  5. Retest when appropriate. After installation and flushing, ask your laboratory or agency whether a treated-water sample should be tested and how often. Keep results with your maintenance log.
  6. Plan for waste. Follow local instructions for disposing of spent carbon or resin and for RO reject water. Do not assume spent media can be discarded in any convenient location, especially when it has concentrated contaminants.

What private-well owners should investigate

Because EPA does not regulate private wells, owners should continue regular testing for general water quality as well as PFAS, using the schedule recommended by their state or local agency. Test after flooding, well repairs, changes in taste or odor, or nearby land-use changes, and retest treated water when advised.

Ask officials about possible local sources, including firefighting-foam use, industrial releases, landfills, contaminated groundwater and other sites. A source investigation can determine whether treatment at the tap is enough or whether the well, casing, plumbing or aquifer needs additional action. Neighbors’ results can provide context but do not replace a sample from your own well.

Consider exposure beyond drinking water

EPA lists contaminated sites, firefighting foam, food packaging, consumer products, biosolids, and contaminated fish or other foods as possible PFAS pathways. If you catch or eat locally sourced fish, follow state or tribal fish advisories. Reducing water ingestion does not necessarily remove exposure from food, dust or consumer products, so discuss broader concerns with your health department or clinician.

Troubleshooting common mistakes

The report says PFAS was detected but gives no comparison level

Ask the laboratory, utility or agency which state or federal value applies and whether the result is an individual compound, a sum or a screening indication. Keep using a safe ingestion source until the authority interprets it.

The package says carbon filter but does not mention PFAS

Do not assume ordinary carbon is sufficient. Look for the specific NSF/ANSI 53 PFAS-reduction claim or the applicable RO claim under NSF/ANSI 58, and verify the exact model in an accredited certifier’s directory.

The filter worked initially, then the result rose

Check cartridge age, gallons treated, flow rate, installation and possible bypass. Breakthrough can occur when capacity is exhausted or water chemistry differs from certification conditions. Replace the media and ask the laboratory or agency whether the system needs resizing or a different technology.

A household member is worried about illness

Do not infer an individual diagnosis from the water number. Bring the laboratory report and exposure history to a clinician or health department, and ask about other possible exposure routes.
