Pause the AI task, check which app or system service is using power, and measure the phone’s temperature before assuming AI is responsible. Warmth can also come from charging, weak cellular signal, setup, restore, downloads, direct sunlight or post-update background work. If the phone is too hot, disconnect it from power, move it to a cooler place and leave it unused until it cools.
First decide whether the phone is warm or dangerously hot
A phone can feel warm when its processor is busy. On-device AI may run model inference locally, but video calls, games, camera processing, high-quality video, large downloads, backup restoration and setup can create similar heat and battery symptoms.
“Warm” means the phone is uncomfortable or noticeably hotter than usual but still operating normally. “Too hot” means you see a temperature warning, charging stops or slows, performance drops sharply, the phone becomes difficult to hold, or it shuts down. Treat those signs as a safety response rather than something to work through.

Immediate action when it is too hot
- Stop the AI feature and any other demanding activity.
- Disconnect the charging cable or wireless charger.
- Move the phone out of direct sunlight, a hot car or an enclosed space.
- Remove a case only if heat occurs while charging and the case is trapping warmth; do not handle a dangerously hot device unnecessarily.
- Leave the phone unused until it returns to a normal temperature.
Google’s Pixel guidance specifically recommends disconnecting power, moving the phone somewhere cooler and not using it until it cools. Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer; rapid condensation can damage electronics.

Check evidence before blaming on-device AI
Record when the symptom occurs. Does it happen only while summarizing text, generating images, translating, transcribing or using another AI function? Does it also happen while charging, in direct sun, after an update, during setup or where cellular reception is poor? This pattern is more useful than assuming a feature caused the problem.
Review battery activity
Open your phone’s battery screen and look at both app use and system activity. A feature that appears briefly at the top during the exact period of heat is a stronger lead than an AI app that used little power while the phone was idle. Look for background activity, high mobile-data use, low-signal time, downloads and restore tasks.
These screens identify correlation, not proof. An AI request can trigger supporting work by another service, and a weak signal can drain more power than the AI operation itself.
Check temperature diagnostics where available
On Pixel 6a and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Phone is very warm. Google’s diagnostic reports one of four states: Cold, Normal, Warm or Elevated. The labels are qualitative; they are not a cross-brand temperature scale.

Apple’s Battery screen does not provide the same four-state label. It does show app and system activity, including background work and periods of low cellular coverage. Use that information together with the conditions in which the iPhone becomes warm.
What to do while the phone is merely warm
Pause the resource-intensive task
Stop the AI request, close any unneeded camera, video, game or download activity, and allow the phone to return to normal before trying again. Repeating a failed request while the device is already hot can extend the thermal load.
Improve the operating conditions
- Move out of direct sunlight and away from hot cars, radiators and other heat sources.
- Use the phone in an open, ventilated space rather than under bedding or inside a bag.
- Lower screen brightness for long sessions.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical, especially where cellular reception is weak.
- Avoid running demanding features while charging if you can schedule them for later.
Google lists video, games, uploads and downloads, setup, backup restoration and using demanding features while charging as common causes of elevated Pixel temperature. Apple similarly notes that setup, restore, major software updates, wireless charging, processor-intensive apps and high-quality video can make an iPhone feel warmer.

Find the apps using power
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review the apps and system entries with the highest overall and background use.
- Open a suspicious app entry to see whether its activity was foreground, background or both.
- Keep Android’s battery optimization enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it.
If an on-device AI feature is integrated into a system app, its work may appear under that app or under a system service rather than under a separate “AI” entry. Compare the timing of that activity with the period when the phone was warm.

Allow time after setup or an update
Google says a new Pixel or a phone that has been factory-reset can take up to a few weeks to finish optimization. After a software update, unusual battery use should normally ease after a few days. If the drain remains unusual after that period, use Pixel support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
iPhone: identify background work and reduce consumption
Inspect Battery
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review the usage graph and the list of apps and system activity.
- Check for background activity, low cellular coverage and any app that became active at the same time as the heat.
- Tap an entry for more detail before deciding whether to restrict or remove it.
An AI feature may be part of an app’s foreground use, while indexing, syncing or network retries appear as system or background activity. The Battery screen helps separate those possibilities.
Turn on Low Power Mode for a test
Enable Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode and repeat only a short, necessary task after the phone has cooled. Low Power Mode reduces selected background and system features. It is a diagnostic and temporary conservation measure, not proof that AI caused the original drain. If the symptom disappears only because many other activities were reduced, inspect the Battery list again.
Allow a few days after an update
Apple advises waiting a few days after an iOS update before judging battery life. Background tasks can temporarily affect battery and thermal behavior while the system completes processing. If the battery remains abnormal after that interval, continue with diagnostics and support rather than assuming the update permanently damaged the phone.

Galaxy: control supported AI features individually
On supported Samsung Galaxy models, some Galaxy AI functions can be disabled or configured for on-device-only processing. Controls may be in the individual feature’s app settings, and both the menu path and availability differ by model, region, software version and feature.
- Open the settings for the specific app or AI function that is active during the heat.
- Look for processing, data-processing or AI options, including an on-device-only choice where offered.
- Turn off one feature at a time, then observe battery use during a comparable task.
- Recheck Settings > Battery after the test rather than assuming the change solved the issue.
Do not treat a setting change as a diagnosis. If the phone remains hot while idle, while charging or in a weak-signal area, another cause is more likely.
Why local AI can use significant resources
Android AICore is a system service that manages AI models such as Gemini Nano. Running inference on the phone avoids sending every operation to a remote server, but local inference still uses the processor, memory and storage. Google Research has explained that inefficient inference can increase memory-bandwidth pressure, slow the user experience and drain battery.

That mechanism makes AI-related drain plausible, not certain. Official consumer support documentation does not establish a universal percentage of battery loss or a specific temperature increase for on-device AI. Model size, repeated prompts, camera or audio input, screen brightness, network conditions and the phone’s hardware all change the workload.

How to test whether AI is the trigger
- Let the phone cool and charge it to a known level.
- Close unrelated demanding apps and note the starting battery percentage.
- Run one short AI task under ordinary room conditions, without charging, and note the duration and warmth.
- Stop the task, wait for the phone to cool, and review Battery usage.
- Repeat once with the AI feature disabled or with on-device-only processing changed, if your phone provides that control.
- Compare like with like. A test in direct sun, on mobile data with weak reception or while charging cannot be fairly compared with an indoor Wi-Fi test.
This simple comparison can show whether the feature is a repeatable trigger. It cannot establish that the feature is damaging the battery.
Temperature and charging limits
Apple’s current operating-temperature guidance states an ambient range of 0°C to 35°C for iPhone and iPad use. Apple also gives 0°C to 35°C as the recommended range for charging; outside safe conditions, charging can slow or pause. These are general operating and charging limits, not an AI-specific threshold.
Thermal protection can reduce performance, dim the display, pause charging or shut the phone down. Those responses are designed to protect the device. Do not bypass them by repeatedly restarting a hot phone or using a cooler accessory that has not been recommended by the manufacturer.

Contact the manufacturer when symptoms persist
- The phone repeatedly shows temperature warnings.
- It shuts down after overheating or continues to turn off unexpectedly.
- It becomes unusually hot while idle, with no demanding app active.
- Battery loss remains abnormal after a few days following an update and after background activity has been identified.
- The device swells, smells unusual or shows physical damage; stop using it and seek urgent service.
Use the battery-health diagnosis
On iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple says to consider service when Battery Health displays Service. Warmth alone is not evidence that AI has damaged the battery, and it is not a reason to attempt a DIY replacement.
For Pixel, contact Google support if the phone continues to turn off after overheating or if diagnostics continue to report elevated temperature. Bring the timing, battery screenshots, software version and the exact feature involved; those details help support distinguish an app problem from a device or battery fault.

These platforms should not be compared by their qualitative temperature labels as if they were identical measurements. Compare what each diagnostic screen actually reports and what protective action the phone takes.
