Treat a visible Jev key or credential as compromised. Revoke or rotate it first, replace it in a server-side secret store, and only then investigate and clean up copies. Deleting a token from source code does not invalidate the credential, and waiting for repository cleanup leaves the account exposed.

This response applies whether the secret appeared in a public repository, browser code, a screenshot, a CI log, an issue, or another artifact. If private customer or internal data was also exposed, run the credential response and a privacy/security incident assessment in parallel.

What to do in the first 15 minutes

  1. Revoke or rotate the Jev key in the issuing console. A key that was visible to an unintended person must be handled as compromised. Jev’s authentication guidance says keys belong on your server, and GitHub’s incident guidance says exposed credentials should be revoked immediately.
  2. If immediate revocation is not possible, contain the account. Isolate or disable the affected deployment, block suspicious egress, or restrict account activity according to your incident plan. Do not assume that making a repository private is containment; someone may already have copied the value.
  3. Report the incident without spreading the secret. Use your private security channel. Do not paste the key into a ticket, chat, issue, screenshot, or log. Refer to the repository, commit, artifact, or alert instead.
  4. Preserve the initial evidence. Record the earliest known exposure time, where it appeared, the key owner, affected environments, relevant commit or artifact identifiers, and any request or account identifiers before broad cleanup changes the timeline.

Revocation prevents future authentication with that credential; it does not show whether the key was already used. That question requires a separate investigation.

Choose the least-disruptive containment path

Action Speed Blast-radius effect Operational impact Use when
Revoke the exposed key Fastest direct control Stops that credential everywhere Requests using the old key fail The key is exposed or suspected to be copied
Create a replacement before revocation Fast, if the provider supports overlap Limits downtime while traffic moves Requires a controlled deployment and verification You need continuity and can safely run old and new credentials briefly
Isolate the deployment or account Immediate fallback when revocation is delayed Reduces ongoing access and egress Can interrupt service and does not replace revocation The issuing console is unavailable or suspicious activity is active
Rewrite repository history Slowest and most disruptive Removes some historical copies from the repository Changes commit hashes and can affect clones, forks, and automation After revocation, when the security owner determines history cleanup is warranted

Replace the Jev credential safely

Generate and store the replacement

  1. Create a new Jev/API-provider credential. If overlap is supported, create it before cutting production traffic; otherwise plan the brief failure window required to replace the old value.
  2. Put the new value in a server-side secret manager or protected runtime configuration. Do not place it in browser JavaScript, a mobile application bundle, a screenshot, a repository, or a client-downloadable configuration file.
  3. Use separate credentials for local development, staging, and production. A later leak should then affect one environment rather than every deployment.
  4. Update the service through your normal deployment mechanism. Keep the value out of build output, debug messages, exception reports, analytics payloads, and request logs.
  5. Run a low-risk health check and verify that requests authenticate with the replacement. Jev’s README documents a key-check path for validating the endpoint.
  6. After the replacement is confirmed, revoke the old credential if it was not already revoked.

Do not test the new key by posting it into a public issue or by echoing it in a CI job. A successful health check proves that the replacement works; it does not prove that the old key was unused.

Investigate whether the exposed credential was used

Start with a bounded time window: the earliest possible exposure through the moment the old credential was revoked. Preserve raw records where your retention policy allows, and make read-only copies for analysis so the original timeline remains available.

Check provider and account activity

  • Review Jev request logs, usage dashboards, and billing or credit consumption for activity that does not match your normal traffic.
  • Look for unusual request times, volumes, endpoints, source addresses, error patterns, destinations, or data returned.
  • Check account and organization audit logs for credential creation, deletion, permission changes, login events, and configuration changes.
  • Compare the provider’s records with your application logs, deployment history, and expected traffic. A discrepancy can identify activity that bypassed your application.

Check repositories and automation

  • Search current files, all branches and tags, pull requests, issues, discussions, wikis, and repository forks.
  • Review CI workflow runs, job output, build artifacts, caches, release bundles, crash reports, and deployment logs. Secrets can persist in generated files even after the source line is deleted.
  • Check chat exports, tickets, paste locations, and shared documents that may have received a screenshot or copied value.
  • Record the source commit, artifact digest or identifier, repositories and forks involved, and the people or systems that had access.

Build an incident timeline

Document the first possible exposure, each known copy, the time of revocation, the replacement deployment, observed provider activity, and the time each environment was verified. Include request IDs and suspicious addresses when available. This timeline lets security staff distinguish evidence of access from evidence that the secret was merely present.

Remove public copies after revocation

Clean the current code and artifacts

Replace the secret in the current source, regenerate affected build artifacts, invalidate cached bundles where possible, and remove screenshots or logs that contain it. Close or resolve secret-scanning alerts as revoked only after the replacement is active. Tell collaborators not to restore the old value from a local file or an old deployment package.

Decide whether to rewrite Git history

Deleting a line from the latest commit does not remove earlier commits. GitHub guidance treats revocation or rotation as the first step and history cleanup as a separate decision. Rewriting history changes commit hashes, can recontaminate the repository from old clones or forks, and may not remove copies held in caches, downloaded archives, or screenshots.

Coordinate any history rewrite with the repository security owner. Identify protected branches, release tags, deployment references, forks, mirrors, and automation that will need new commit IDs. Communicate the force-push and reclone requirements before starting. If the repository is public, assume the old value may remain in third-party copies even after the rewrite.

Assess whether private data was exposed

A credential incident can become a privacy or confidentiality incident when Jev received, returned, logged, or could reach information beyond the key itself. Do not treat “the key was revoked” as proof that no data was accessed.

Classify the possible data

Identify exactly what the integration could send or retrieve, such as prompts, ticket text, customer identifiers, credentials, access tokens, internal documents, or regulated information. Map each data type to the systems, accounts, customers, employees, or other subjects it concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Determine what actually happened

Separate four questions: Was the data present in a request? Was it returned in an output? Was it written to a log or downloaded? Is there evidence that an unauthorized party accessed it? Preserve provider, application, storage, and network evidence for each question. Avoid broad deletion that would destroy the timeline or prevent a reliable scope assessment.

Escalate through the right owners

Notify the security incident lead and the privacy or legal owners as soon as private data may have been accessed. They should determine the applicable contractual, regulatory, customer, and employment obligations. Notification timing depends on the deployment, data types, contracts, and jurisdictions; there is no single deadline that applies to every Jev incident.

Keep credentials server-side

Design the integration so browsers and mobile clients call your server, while the server calls Jev with the credential. Enforce this boundary in code review and deployment checks. A value embedded in client code must be considered retrievable by anyone who can download or inspect that client.

Separate environments and services

Use a distinct credential for each environment and, where practical, each service. Scope permissions to the smallest useful set, rotate credentials through a documented procedure, and remove keys that no longer have an owner or deployment.

Control what gets logged

Redact authorization headers, query parameters, request bodies, prompts, tokens, and provider responses where they can contain secrets or private data. Review CI output, error reporting, analytics payloads, and support tooling—not just application logs.

Enable detection before the next push

Turn on repository secret scanning and push protection where available, and route alerts to an owner who can revoke credentials immediately. Add pre-commit or CI checks as an additional safeguard, but do not rely on scanning to make an already exposed key safe; revocation remains the first action.

Maintain a response runbook

  • Name the people authorized to revoke provider credentials and the people who own privacy decisions.
  • Keep private instructions for the provider console, secret manager, deployment rollback, log retention, and evidence preservation.
  • Define how to test a replacement key without printing it.
  • Document how to notify customers, partners, and staff when the assessment shows an impact.
  • Run a tabletop exercise so the team can contain an exposure without putting the secret into another system.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deleting first and revoking later: repository cleanup does not stop a copied credential from working.
  • Assuming a private repository is safe: collaborators, forks, caches, logs, and downloaded archives may already contain the value.
  • Rotating only production: a leaked staging or local key can still provide access to shared accounts or data.
  • Destroying evidence during cleanup: deleting logs or rewriting history before recording identifiers can make scope determination impossible.
  • Posting the secret while asking for help: use a private incident channel and redact all examples.
  • Declaring “no impact” because no abuse is visible: absence of an obvious billing spike is not proof that the key was not used.
