Start with Not interested on each upsetting recommendation. For a broader cleanup, lower Sensitive Content Control, add recurring terms to Hidden Words, or use Reset suggested content in Content preferences. If you want to avoid recommendations altogether while browsing followed accounts, switch to the chronological Following feed.
These controls reduce and reshape suggestions; they do not guarantee that every upsetting post will disappear. Instagram’s menu names and the availability of some options can differ by app version, account, country, device and age.
Why Instagram can recommend upsetting posts
Instagram has two separate standards that are easy to confuse. Community Guidelines determine whether content is prohibited. Recommendation standards determine whether content may be shown in places such as Explore, Reels and suggested-post surfaces. A post can therefore remain on Instagram while being excluded from recommendations because it may be upsetting to some viewers.

Meta made the same distinction in its 2020 Recommendation Guidelines announcement: “To be clear, this content is still allowed on our platforms – we just won’t show it in places where we recommend content.” That means a distressing recommendation is not automatically evidence that Instagram has found a rules violation, and a successful setting change may reduce exposure without removing the original post from the service.
Choose the control that matches the problem

Think in terms of scope and time
The quickest choice depends on whether the problem is one post or a pattern. Not interested is narrow and immediate: it removes the item you can see and supplies a signal about similar recommendations. Hidden Words is also targeted, but remains active for the terms you enter. Sensitive Content Control works at the category level, so it can affect many recommendations without knowing the exact words used in each caption.
A reset is broader than all three. It clears the recommendation state Instagram has built and lets the system personalize again from later activity. That makes it useful when Explore, Reels and suggested posts have all drifted in an unwanted direction, but excessive for a single stray item. A 30-day snooze is temporary, while Following changes the feed view you are using rather than retraining recommendations elsewhere.
Step-by-step ways to reduce upsetting recommendations
1. Mark the individual post Not interested
- Open the three-dot menu on the upsetting recommendation.
- Tap Not interested.
- Continue using the option on similar recommendations instead of opening, liking, commenting on or sharing them.
Meta says the selected post disappears immediately and that the feedback should lead to fewer similar recommendations. In Explore, Instagram has also described selecting more than one item and marking the group Not interested when the multi-select control is offered. The exact control can move as the app changes, so use the menu attached to the post rather than looking for a permanent button elsewhere.

If the same subject appears repeatedly, apply the control consistently. One tap is feedback about one recommendation; several accurate taps give Instagram a clearer indication of the pattern you want reduced. Do not interact with an upsetting post merely to make it disappear, because viewing, replaying, liking, commenting or sharing can become later signals about what holds your attention.
2. Lower Sensitive Content Control
- Open your profile.
- Open Settings, Settings and activity or More options, depending on the interface.
- Look under account or content preferences for Sensitive Content Control.
- Choose the more restrictive option available, such as Limit or Limit Even More, and confirm if Instagram asks.
Meta’s July 2021 instructions list Limit, Allow and Limit Even More. The setting concerns categories Instagram classifies as sensitive; it is not a universal “hide anything upsetting” switch. A post can still feel disturbing without falling into one of the categories affected by this control.

Under-18 accounts cannot use the Allow option, and additional teen protections may limit which changes a young person can make independently.
3. Add recurring terms to Hidden Words
- Open your profile and enter the settings area.
- Find Hidden Words using the visible menu or the settings search field.
- Add words, phrases, emojis and hashtags associated with the recommendations you do not want.
- Save the list, then revise it when you notice a term that is too broad or too narrow.
Meta describes Hidden Words as a way to avoid recommendations containing your specified terms in captions or hashtags. Use specific phrases when possible: a single broad word can hide benign posts you would prefer to see. This filter is most useful for recurring topics, names, slogans and hashtags; it cannot identify every upsetting post that uses different language.
Consider common variations separately. If a topic appears with a hashtag, its plain-word form and an emoji, add each form that is actually appearing. Conversely, remove entries that suppress harmless posts. Hidden Words is a text-based filter, not a judgment about whether a post violates Instagram’s rules.

4. Reset suggested content for a full fresh start
- Go to your profile.
- Open the three-bar More options menu.
- Select Content preferences.
- Choose Reset suggested content.
- Review the confirmation screen and complete the reset.
Meta’s published reset instructions say Instagram then personalizes recommendations again over time from the content and accounts you interact with. The reset flow also gives you an opportunity to review the accounts you follow. Use it when the overall recommendation profile has drifted, not for a single bad post that can be handled with Not interested.

A reset is a new starting point, not a permanent suppression list. If you immediately watch, comment on or share the same unwanted material, later recommendations can move back toward it. After resetting, use Not interested on slip-throughs and deliberately interact with subjects and accounts you do want. The 2024 reset guidance is the most recent direct reset path among Meta’s published instructions, but labels may still vary in the current app.
5. Snooze suggested posts for 30 days
When Instagram presents the snooze option for suggested posts, choose it to pause those suggestions for the documented 30-day period. This is a temporary break rather than a change to the underlying recommendation profile. If upsetting material returns after the snooze ends, combine a fresh Not interested response with Sensitive Content Control or a reset.
Snooze applies to suggested posts in the feed, not necessarily every recommendation surface. You may still encounter recommendations in Explore or Reels, so use it as a breathing space rather than a complete block.
6. Switch to Following or Favorites
Open the feed selector and choose Following when you want a chronological view of accounts you follow without suggested posts. Meta also describes Favorites as a way to give selected accounts more prominence. These views change what you see in that feed; they do not erase recommendations from Explore, Reels or other surfaces.

Following is useful when you want predictable updates from known accounts while you work through other settings. Favorites can prioritize a smaller group, but neither view changes the accounts you follow or guarantees that an upsetting post will never appear on another Instagram surface.
What to do after changing the settings
Recommendation systems learn from later interactions. After a reset or a setting change, avoid lingering on unwanted posts, replaying them, commenting, sharing or following accounts that publish them. Use Not interested promptly when an item slips through, and interact normally with accounts and subjects you do want. Instagram may need additional activity before the new pattern is obvious because the reset is a starting point, not a permanent suppression list.
Keep Hidden Words focused. Add the exact term, a common spelling variation and a relevant hashtag when those are the forms appearing in captions. Remove a term if it blocks too much unrelated content. Sensitive Content Control and Hidden Words solve different problems: one changes exposure to defined categories, while the other looks for specified text or symbols.
If you cannot find a setting
- Search inside settings. Try “sensitive,” “content preferences,” “hidden words” or “reset suggested content” in the app’s settings search. Published paths are guides, and labels can differ.
- Check the account and age. Meta says the Allow choice in Sensitive Content Control is unavailable to people under 18, and teen protections can limit which changes a young person can make independently.
- Check the surface. Not interested belongs to an individual recommendation; Following affects the feed view; a reset is located in Content preferences. Looking in the wrong area can make a working feature appear to be missing.
- Allow for rollout differences. Meta’s announcements do not establish a complete current availability matrix by country, account type, device or app version. If a documented option is absent, use the closest available control and check again after the interface changes.
When an upsetting post may also violate Instagram’s rules
Use the post menu’s reporting route when you believe content crosses Instagram’s Community Guidelines, rather than relying only on recommendation controls. The distinction matters: Not interested tells the recommender that you do not want similar suggestions; it does not ask Instagram to make a rules decision. Conversely, content can be allowed under the guidelines and still be unsuitable for your recommendations. Reporting does not guarantee removal, so continue using the feed and filtering controls for your own exposure.

A practical decision path
- One isolated recommendation: choose Not interested.
- A repeated topic, phrase or hashtag: add precise entries to Hidden Words.
- Several categories of sensitive material: choose the stricter available Sensitive Content Control level.
- A recommendation profile that feels broadly wrong: use Reset suggested content, then avoid interacting with unwanted material while Instagram relearns.
- You want no suggestions while catching up with followed accounts: use Following; use Favorites if you need selected accounts prioritized.
- You need a short pause: use the documented 30-day snooze for suggested posts.
Limits to keep in mind
No single control covers every recommendation surface or every meaning of “upsetting.” Sensitive Content Control is category-based, Hidden Words depends on terms in captions or hashtags, Not interested is feedback rather than a block, and a reset rebuilds from future behavior. Following avoids suggested posts in that view but does not change Explore or Reels. Menu labels and availability can change, so treat the published paths as landmarks and use the current settings search when they do.
