Disconnect the charger and accessories, shut the device down if you can do so safely, and do not charge or turn it back on. Blot moisture from the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth without pushing liquid into ports, speakers, seams, vents, or keyboard openings. Then arrange prompt inspection by the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. A phone or laptop can develop internal damage or corrosion even when it still appears to work.
If peroxide also touched someone’s eyes, skin, mouth, or was swallowed, handle that as a separate first-aid emergency. Move the person away from the device cleanup and contact Poison Control or your local poison service.
First actions when peroxide may be inside
- Stop power immediately. Unplug the charger and every accessory. If the device is on and shutting it down is safe, power it off using the normal shutdown command. Do not connect a charger to a wet device.
- Keep it off. Do not restart it to check whether it works, and do not repeatedly press buttons. Electricity moving through moisture can worsen a fault, while corrosion can continue after the visible liquid disappears.
- Remove only external, user-removable items. If you can do so without opening the enclosure, disconnect cables, docks, headphones, and other accessories. Follow the model maker’s instructions for a removable SIM or microSD card. Do not dismantle the phone or laptop.
- Blot the exterior. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Dab rather than scrub, and keep the cloth from forcing liquid toward openings. Do not spray cleaner onto the device or pour anything into a port.
- Arrange professional inspection. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider as soon as possible and explain that hydrogen peroxide may have entered the enclosure. Tell them the concentration if known, the approximate amount, where it landed, and when it happened.
These steps apply whether the device is currently responsive or completely dead. A working screen, keyboard, camera, or charging indicator is not proof that internal parts are undamaged.
Why hydrogen peroxide inside electronics is a special concern
Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid contaminant, not an approved internal cleaning method. Once it reaches a port, speaker grille, microphone opening, seam, keyboard, trackpad, or ventilation path, it can contact connectors, circuit boards, batteries, displays, and other components. The liquid may evaporate unevenly, leaving affected areas that are invisible from the outside. Corrosion or an electrical short can appear later rather than during the spill.

Official guidance available from Apple and Samsung addresses liquid exposure and exterior cleaning, not a peroxide-specific internal repair procedure. Those instructions do not establish that a particular model will recover, identify the amount that is safe, or provide a home method for neutralizing peroxide inside a device. Treat the event as possible internal liquid damage until a qualified technician examines it.
Inside an opening versus a spill on the outside

Do not try to wash peroxide out of a laptop or an unknown phone. Samsung’s published rinse instruction is conditional: it is for water-resistant Galaxy devices exposed to specified dirty liquids. It is not a general recommendation for hydrogen peroxide, every phone, or any laptop.
Phone-specific guidance
Apple iPhone and other Apple phones
Apple’s general product guidance says to keep liquids away, prevent moisture from entering openings, and avoid cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide. If liquid gets inside an Apple product, Apple directs the owner to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider as soon as possible. For an exterior that is merely damp, Apple advises shutting down, unplugging the power adapter, and using a damp soft lint-free cloth while keeping moisture out of openings.

That exterior-cleaning step is not an internal repair. If peroxide may have entered the charging connector, speakers, microphones, buttons, SIM area, or a seam, leave the phone off and let the service provider determine whether it needs disassembly, cleaning, parts replacement, or data-preservation work.
Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung warns that internal damage or corrosion can occur after liquid exposure even when a Galaxy appears to work. For a non-water-resistant Galaxy, Samsung’s instructions are to turn it off, remove removable SIM or SD cards and accessories, wipe it with a dry cloth, and visit a service center promptly. Samsung cautions not to turn the phone on because moisture may remain inside.
For a water-resistant Galaxy exposed to the specific dirty liquids covered by Samsung’s guidance, the company gives a conditional rinse-and-dry procedure and says not to connect a charger or accessories until the phone is completely dry. That limited instruction must not be extended to hydrogen peroxide or to models whose water-resistance status is unknown. Arrange service even if the phone starts normally.

Other phone brands or an unknown model
Find the exact model’s liquid-damage instructions from its manufacturer, but do not delay the basic precautions: disconnect power, shut down, avoid charging, wipe only the exterior, and seek authorized inspection. If you cannot verify water-resistance status or the liquid’s path, assume the phone is not protected against this exposure.
Laptop-specific guidance
Laptops have larger openings and more internal layers than phones. Peroxide can travel through a keyboard, trackpad, hinge gap, USB port, headphone jack, cooling vent, or display bezel. A laptop may continue running long enough to corrupt data or damage a board, so shutting it down promptly is more important than saving the current session.
- Unplug the power adapter and all peripherals.
- Shut the laptop down using its normal operating-system command if it responds. If it is frozen and the manufacturer provides a documented emergency shutdown method, use that rather than repeatedly testing it.
- Close the lid only if doing so will not spread liquid across the keyboard or screen. Keep the laptop in a stable position with openings facing away from pooled liquid.
- Blot visible moisture with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not insert tissues, swabs, tools, or paper into ports, and do not open the chassis unless a qualified service provider instructs you.
- Contact the laptop manufacturer or an authorized service provider for inspection.
For a Mac laptop’s exterior, Apple’s instructions specifically call for shutting down, unplugging the power adapter, and using a damp soft lint-free cloth while keeping moisture out of openings. That guidance concerns the outside; it does not authorize pouring liquid through a keyboard or port.

What not to do
- Do not power-test the device. “It still turns on” is not a safety test and can turn a recoverable contamination into a larger board failure.
- Do not charge it. Charging introduces power at exactly the time moisture may be bridging contacts.
- Do not add another liquid. Do not rinse a laptop or a generic phone, and do not apply alcohol, electronic cleaner, detergent, or more peroxide to chase the spill.
- Do not use rice, heat, a hair dryer, compressed air, or a heater. These methods are not established by the manufacturer guidance here and can move liquid deeper, leave debris, create static, or damage batteries, seals, displays, and plastics.
- Do not open the enclosure as a first response. Opening can tear seals, damage cables, create an electrical or battery hazard, and complicate an authorized repair.
- Do not assume a water-resistance rating covers peroxide. Ratings describe defined test conditions, not every chemical concentration, exposure route, or aging seal.
When a person was exposed too
Device handling must never delay human first aid. Poison Control reports that 3% hydrogen peroxide in an eye can cause immediate stinging, irritation, tearing, and blurred vision. If peroxide entered an eye, got on skin, or was swallowed, contact webPOISONCONTROL or a poison center for situation-specific instructions. In the United States, Poison Control lists 1-800-222-1222; use the appropriate local poison service elsewhere.
Poison Control’s first-aid guidance emphasizes that early action can matter, especially when begun within seconds to minutes, and directs people to poison-center advice after appropriate rinsing where applicable. Do not put a contaminated device near the face while assisting someone, and do not postpone medical or poison-control advice while trying to save hardware.
What to tell the service provider
Give the technician a precise account rather than merely saying “water damage.” Include:

- the device brand, model, and whether it was powered on;
- the peroxide concentration, if shown on the container;
- an estimate of the amount and the first location of contact;
- which openings may have been reached;
- the time since exposure and every action already taken; and
- whether the device was charged, restarted, or connected to accessories afterward.
Ask about data-preservation priorities before authorizing a reset or board replacement if the files are important. Do not promise yourself that drying alone will restore the device: the available manufacturer material does not guarantee recovery or specify a peroxide-specific internal repair.
Warranty and repair expectations
Apple states that liquid damage is not covered by Apple product warranty or AppleCare Protection Plans, while noting that consumers may have rights under applicable law. Coverage and legal rights depend on the region, product, plan, and circumstances. Samsung’s service guidance recommends inspection after liquid exposure, but the materials available here do not establish a universal warranty outcome. A service center must assess the actual model and damage.
Use the manufacturer or an authorized provider first because they can identify the model’s disassembly requirements, sealing design, diagnostic process, and parts availability. If no authorized option is accessible, choose a reputable repair professional who handles liquid-damaged electronics and ask for a written diagnostic before approving work.

- Peroxide only on a dry, closed exterior: disconnect power, wipe gently, and monitor without spraying or charging until the surface and nearby seams are dry.
- Peroxide near or inside an opening: shut down, keep unplugged, avoid all testing, and arrange prompt inspection.
- Water-resistance status unknown: treat the device as unprotected; do not apply a rinse instruction from another model.
- Device works normally after the spill: keep it off anyway and obtain inspection, because delayed corrosion remains possible.
- Person also exposed: prioritize rinsing and poison-control or medical guidance over device recovery.
The safest home intervention ends with exterior blotting and power isolation. Internal peroxide exposure requires a professional assessment, not a household drying trick.
