Stop eating it and do not taste it again to “test” whether it is safe. Set the candy aside, keep its wrapper and identifying details, and inspect it without further handling. Look for discoloration, mold, an unusual odor, a damaged or mismatched wrapper, tiny pinholes, or tears. Then check current FDA recall and allergy notices using the exact product information. Throw away candy that looks suspicious or matches a recall, and contact a health care provider if anyone develops symptoms.
What to do immediately
An unusual taste, appearance, smell, or package is enough reason to stop. It does not prove deliberate tampering or contamination, but you cannot make a reliable safety decision by taking another bite. FDA Halloween guidance says to “Throw away anything that looks suspicious.” Its broader food-tampering guidance also says not to use food that is discolored, moldy, has an off odor, or comes from a damaged or unusual product.
- Stop eating. Do not take another bite, lick the candy, or offer it to somebody else.
- Set it aside. Keep the item away from children and pets. If it is already unwrapped, retain the wrapper, bag, box, receipt, or other identifying information if you can do so without unnecessary contact.
- Inspect without consuming. Look at the wrapper and candy for physical or sensory changes, but do not sniff closely or handle a potentially hazardous item more than necessary.
- Check official notices. Compare the product’s name, package size, UPC, lot or date code, best-by or use-by information, and distribution area with FDA notices.
- Discard or report as directed. Follow the specific recall notice’s disposal or return instructions. For suspected tampering or a food complaint, use FDA reporting guidance and any applicable local authority.
- Watch for illness. If someone becomes ill after eating the candy, contact a health care provider and explain what was eaten and when.
Why appearance or taste cannot prove that candy is safe
Some changes may have an ordinary explanation, such as storage conditions or a manufacturing variation. However, the cited safety guidance does not provide a candy-specific visual or taste test that can distinguish a harmless change from contamination or tampering. A normal-looking piece can still carry a hazard, and an odd-looking piece may not reveal its cause from a photograph or a flavor description.

FoodSafety.gov notes that bacteria and viruses that cause foodborne illness may not be seen, smelled, or tasted. That is why a piece that tastes normal is not automatically safe, and a piece that tastes “off” should not be tested repeatedly. Appearance, odor, and taste are warning signals, not laboratory results.

FDA says deliberate tampering intended to cause a major disease outbreak is rare, particularly in the United States. That general statement should not be used to clear a specific suspicious item. Treat the individual candy conservatively without spreading unsupported rumors about widespread Halloween poisoning.
Signs that call for discarding the individual piece
The following signs come directly from FDA Halloween and food-tampering advice. They are reasons to avoid the candy; none, by itself, identifies who caused the change or proves a particular contaminant.
| What you notice | Safe response |
|---|---|
| Unusual appearance or discoloration | Do not eat it; place it with other suspicious food for disposal according to applicable guidance. |
| Mold or an off odor | Do not taste it to confirm the problem. Discard it and retain identifying information when practical. |
| Tiny pinholes, a tear, open seam, or other wrapper damage | Do not consume or hand it to another person. Keep the packaging information and follow reporting or disposal instructions. |
| A missing, mismatched, or apparently altered wrapper | Set it aside as suspicious. Do not assume the candy is safe because it resembles other pieces in the bowl. |
| A taste that is bitter, chemical, rancid, stale, or otherwise different from the expected product | Stop immediately and do not take a second bite. Check recalls and contact a health care provider if symptoms occur. |
Do not diagnose the cause from a picture, smell, or flavor. If the change is unexplained, the source-supported decision is to avoid the item and investigate through an official notice, the manufacturer, or a regulator.

How to check whether the candy is recalled
A recall applies only when the product details and the notice match. Start with FDA’s Food Recalls: What You Need to Know guidance, then read the full notice for the product in question. Do not rely on a social-media post or a photograph of a different package.

Record the identifying details
- Brand and exact product name
- Package size, count, or flavor
- UPC or other package identifier
- Lot code, batch code, and best-by or use-by date
- Manufacturer or distributor shown on the label
- Where it was purchased or distributed
Match every detail the notice specifies
FDA and other recall notices can cover only particular sizes, codes, dates, or distribution areas. A product with the same name may be outside the notice if its lot code or package size differs. Conversely, a candy that looks ordinary may be included if its code matches. FoodSafety.gov’s recalled-product guidance says not to eat a product that matches a recall and to follow the notice’s instructions.
If you cannot read a code or cannot establish where the candy came from, do not eat it while trying to resolve the uncertainty. Keep the packaging, avoid giving the item away, and contact the manufacturer or the regulator named in the applicable notice.
Check allergy alerts, not just contamination recalls
A candy can look and taste normal yet still be unsafe for someone with an allergy. Read the ingredient and allergen statement, compare it with the person’s known allergies, and look for undeclared-allergen alerts. An allergy alert is a safety notice even when there is no visible spoilage or package damage.

See the FDA allergy alert for the affected product details and instructions.

What to do with suspicious candy and packaging
Keep evidence without creating another hazard
Retain the wrapper, outer bag, receipt, lot code, and photographs only if you can do so safely. Do not open sealed packages further, cut into the candy, transfer it to another container, or repeatedly pass it around for inspection. Wash hands after handling ordinary packaging, and keep the item away from food that will be eaten.
Follow the notice’s disposal instructions
Some recalls specify whether to return a product, dispose of it in a particular way, or contact the seller. Follow that instruction rather than improvising. If there is no matching recall but the piece is suspicious, FDA’s Halloween guidance supports throwing it away. Do not donate it, place it back in a communal candy bowl, or give it to an animal.
Report suspected tampering or a food complaint
FDA’s Consumer Complaint System and MedWatch guidance lists suspected product tampering among the problems it wants to hear about. Provide the product identity, codes, purchase location, date, photographs if available, and a factual description of what you observed. The agency or local authority can tell you whether additional handling or submission is appropriate.

If someone already ate it
Do not induce vomiting or take another bite to determine what happened. Note the product, amount if known, time eaten, package codes, and any symptoms. Contact a health care provider if symptoms develop or if an allergic exposure is possible. Tell the clinician that the food was unusual and provide the wrapper or a photograph of its identifying information.
Symptoms can have many causes, so do not claim that a particular candy caused illness without medical evaluation. Seek emergency help for severe symptoms such as trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or other signs of a medical emergency. For less severe but persistent or concerning symptoms, call a health care provider promptly.

The wrapper is torn or has a tiny hole
FDA specifically identifies tears and tiny pinholes as signs to take seriously. Set the piece aside and discard it according to applicable instructions. A small opening does not tell you whether the damage happened during manufacturing, shipping, or later, so do not try to “look inside” and clear it yourself.
The candy has a white film or changed color
Do not assume a visual change is harmless and do not taste it to compare with another piece. FDA guidance covers unusual appearance and discoloration as reasons to throw away suspicious treats. Keep the package details so you can check whether the entire lot is affected.

Only one piece tastes wrong
Stop eating that piece and keep the rest separate while you inspect the packaging and product information. Do not conclude that every piece is contaminated, but do not serve the remaining pieces until you have checked for a matching recall, damage, or allergen issue. If the pieces came from one opened package and you cannot establish their safety, discarding the package avoids exposing others.
The candy was homemade or unwrapped
Without a sealed wrapper, you may not have a lot code, ingredient statement, or recall identifier. Ask the giver about ingredients and preparation only to identify allergy risks; do not use an informal assurance to override visible spoilage, an off odor, or an unexplained taste. When safety cannot be established, do not eat it.
A child wants to keep the suspicious piece
Remove it from reach and explain that tasting it again is not a test. Children may not notice or describe an unusual flavor reliably, so an adult should handle the package, check notices, and decide whether it must be discarded.
How to avoid confusing rumors with a real warning
Halloween posts often circulate photographs or claims about “poisoned candy” without product codes, dates, or a named authority. Do not forward an allegation as fact. Check FDA recall and safety-alert pages, the manufacturer’s official notice, and local public-health information. A real notice identifies the product and the action consumers should take; a vague rumor does not make an ordinary package unsafe or clear a suspicious one.
The practical rule remains narrow and consistent: an unexplained change means stop, isolate, and verify; a confirmed match means do not eat it and follow the notice; symptoms mean contact a health care provider.
