First, identify exactly what happened: a usage warning, an explicit length-limit message, an API error, a safety refusal, or a reply that simply stopped. These symptoms have different causes and fixes. Use the matching section below rather than assuming every interruption is a quota problem.
Identify the signal before trying a fix
Read the complete notice in Claude, your browser, or your API response. If there is no notice, note whether Claude stopped mid-sentence, ended normally, or refused a specific request. The product surface and wording determine the next step.

When Claude shows a usage warning
There is no single universal message count for every Claude user. Anthropic states that the number of messages you can send varies by plan. Available capacity can also be affected by message length, attachment size, the current conversation’s length, tool use, model choice, effort level, artifacts, and multi-step tasks. A long thread with large files can therefore consume availability differently from a short text-only chat, even when both contain a similar number of turns.

- Open Claude’s account or profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Usage.
- Review the session and weekly indicators shown for your account.
- Compare the time of the warning with the usage information before changing prompts or starting new threads.
If you do not see a Usage page, that does not by itself prove that the account is malfunctioning. The dashboard is described for eligible plans and seat-based Enterprise accounts; availability can differ by subscription and role.
Reduce demand without misdiagnosing the problem
When the notice clearly concerns usage, make the next request smaller and less resource-intensive. Remove old material that is no longer needed, attach only the files relevant to the current question, and avoid asking for several independent multi-step tasks in one turn. Changing those inputs can reduce consumption, but it does not override a plan’s limits. Do not describe a policy refusal as a usage warning simply because it happened after a long session.

When Claude reports a length or context-window limit
An explicit length-limit message means the prompt and its attached material exceed the context Claude can use for that request. Anthropic’s university-account help guidance describes the condition this way: “This appears when your prompt exceeds Claude’s available context window.” That advice is scoped to a length-limit error, not to every refusal or interruption.
Shorten the request methodically
- Keep the task statement. Rewrite the request in a few sentences that state the goal, required format, audience, and constraints.
- Remove irrelevant history. Copy only the earlier decisions, facts, or excerpts Claude must see. Omit greetings, repeated drafts, and settled discussion.
- Trim attachments. Delete unrelated files and split a large document into sections. Include the specific pages or passages needed for the current answer.
- Compress repeated material. Replace duplicated instructions with one authoritative version. If several documents say the same thing, retain the clearest passage.
- Send the work in stages. Ask for an outline or extraction first, then use the shorter result for the next step instead of resending every source file.
- Start a new conversation when appropriate. A fresh thread removes accumulated context. Bring over a concise handoff containing the necessary facts and the exact unfinished task.
Starting a new chat is a documented remedy for an explicit length-limit error, but it is not a universal fix for a safety refusal, an API rate limit, or an account problem. If a short prompt in a new conversation still produces the same length message, preserve the wording and account details for support.

When an API request returns HTTP 429
API rate limiting is separate from Claude’s consumer-facing usage dashboard. Anthropic’s API guidance says an exceeded rate limit returns HTTP status 429, identifies which limit was exceeded, and includes a retry-after header stating how long to wait.
Use the response details
- Confirm that the failed request is an API call and record the HTTP status.
- Read the response body to identify the specific limit named by Anthropic.
- Read the
retry-afterheader and wait for the indicated interval before sending the request again. - Check your integration’s request pattern, model selection, and payload size against the limit identified in the response.
- Log the timestamp, status, response body, and header value if the 429 continues after the stated wait.
Do not substitute Claude.ai instructions for API diagnostics. The Usage page in a web account does not tell an integration how to handle a particular 429 response; the API response itself supplies the limit and retry timing.

Distinguish rate limiting from a long prompt
A long prompt can trigger a context-window error, while a burst of API traffic can trigger HTTP 429. They may occur near each other, but they require different actions: reduce the content for a length error, and follow the API’s named limit and retry-after value for a 429.

When Claude explicitly refuses for safety or policy reasons
A policy refusal is not established as a quota, context-window, or account-usage error. The official guidance reviewed for this topic does not provide a definitive recovery procedure for every explicit safety refusal. Do not claim that upgrading, waiting for a usage reset, or opening a new conversation will make the refused request acceptable. Typing “continue” is not guaranteed to change the outcome.

Read the refusal carefully and determine whether Claude declined the entire task or only a particular part. If you need help with a legitimate goal, make the benign purpose and requested output clear without asking Claude to bypass its safeguards. If the same refusal persists, keep the exact wording for a support inquiry. Avoid repeatedly rephrasing a request solely to evade a safety boundary.
When Claude stops without a warning
An answer that ends abruptly with no usage notice, length message, or policy explanation cannot be diagnosed from the available official guidance alone. It may be a product or account issue, but the evidence does not establish a single cause or a guaranteed recovery action.
Capture the facts before retrying
- Save the complete conversation and the last visible sentence.
- Record the date and time, account type, model selected, and whether files, tools, artifacts, or multi-step instructions were involved.
- Note whether Claude displayed an error, returned an empty message, or appeared to finish normally.
- Try the same short, non-sensitive prompt only if doing so helps distinguish a one-off interruption from a repeatable account problem; do not assume that a new thread proves the cause.
If the cutoff repeats or affects ordinary requests, treat it as an unresolved account or product issue and contact official support with those details.

How to contact Claude support
For an account-specific problem that remains unresolved, open the account menu, select Get help, and use the support messenger. Anthropic describes this support as asynchronous. Access to human specialists depends on the plan and account role, and no response time is promised.
Include information that lets support classify the issue
- The exact error text or the precise point where the response stopped.
- When the problem began and whether it happens in one conversation or several.
- Your account type and, for an organization, your seat or administrator role.
- The model, approximate prompt or attachment size, and whether tools or artifacts were used.
- For API calls, the HTTP status, response body, named limit, and
retry-aftervalue. - Steps you already took, such as shortening the prompt or opening a new conversation.
Remove passwords, API keys, private personal data, and confidential document contents before sending transcripts or screenshots. Support needs the error and context, not your secret credentials.
