Repeated breaking-news alerts can keep your body in a state of readiness even when you are not facing an immediate danger. The practical fix is not to ignore important information: keep alerts that protect your immediate safety, mute nonessential headline pushes, and replace constant interruptions with planned check-ins from a trusted source.

If a headline alert makes your pulse jump, interrupts work or sleep, or leaves you checking your phone repeatedly, change the way news reaches you today. Open the notification settings for the news apps and social platforms that interrupt you, disable nonessential breaking-news pushes, and retain only alerts you genuinely need for immediate safety. Then choose a reliable source and one or more scheduled times to check updates. Add screen-free periods, especially during meals and before bed, and use simple stress-management activities when your body remains activated.

First separate safety alerts from discretionary news

Do not treat every notification as equally optional. An evacuation order, severe-weather warning, public-health instruction, or message from a local emergency authority may require rapid action. A general “breaking” headline, live-blog update, opinion notification, or social-media mention usually can wait for a planned check.

During an active emergency, stay informed through trusted sources. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s emergency-preparedness guidance points people to the CDC and state or local health departments for reliable information. Keep the channels that provide practical instructions, and mute duplicate or commentary-driven alerts that add anxiety without changing what you need to do.

  • Check manually: sources you trust but do not need to monitor minute by minute.

Why constant headlines can feel overwhelming

Continuous alerts create repeated decisions: Should you open this? Is the situation getting worse? Do you need to tell someone? That interruption pattern can keep attention and physical arousal elevated. Steven Stosny, PhD, told the American Psychological Association (APA) that a warning sign is “if you get this body tension, or a rise in your pulse rate, just before you check the news.” Notice that response as useful feedback rather than as proof that you have a disorder.

Research discussed by APA uses terms such as “headline stress,” “headline anxiety,” “media saturation overload,” and “doomscrolling,” but news-related stress has no formally recognized disorder or diagnostic criteria. The available studies also describe associations, not proof that alerts alone cause distress. People who are already distressed may seek more news, and several studies took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, when uncertainty was unusually high.

Evidence reported by APA What it shows—and what it does not show
2,251 adults in a spring 2020 study by Hwang and colleagues More frequent COVID-19 information seeking across media was associated with more reported emotional distress. It does not establish that notifications caused the distress.
61 young adults in a 30-day study by Matthew Price and colleagues Social-media news exposure was associated with more depression and PTSD symptoms. The report does not establish that exposure caused those symptoms.
83% of Americans in an APA survey by June 2020 That historical sample said they were stressed about the nation’s future. It is not a current prevalence estimate.
73% of Americans in APA’s March 2022 survey That historical sample felt overwhelmed by the number of crises facing the world. It should not be read as a current population measure.
Two-thirds of 5,545 Spanish adults during a COVID-19 shutdown People who limited COVID-19 news and also maintained healthy routines and outdoor activity were likely to report less stress. The result cannot be attributed to news reduction alone.

Step 1: Audit and mute the alerts that are interrupting you

You do not need a special app or subscription. Use the notification controls in each news app, social network, email service, and your phone’s general settings. Labels differ by operating system and app version, so look for options such as Notifications, Breaking news, Alerts, Topics, or Push notifications rather than relying on one platform’s exact menu path.

  1. List every source that can interrupt you. Include news apps, browser notifications, email newsletters, social platforms, messaging groups, and widgets.
  2. Mark each alert as safety-critical, useful-but-not-urgent, or unnecessary. Keep the first category, schedule or batch the second, and mute the third.
  3. Disable duplicate routes. If the same event arrives as a push, email, text, and social notification, retain the route you trust most.
  4. Turn off previews on the lock screen if headlines trigger immediate checking. You can still open the app during your chosen check-in.
  5. Recheck after several days. If you are missing information you truly need, restore that specific alert rather than switching everything back on.

Muting an alert does not delete the news. It changes the timing so you decide when to look.

Step 2: Replace interruption with a deliberate news schedule

There is no evidence in the cited material for one ideal number of checks per day. Choose a schedule that meets your responsibilities and safety needs, then adjust it according to how you feel afterward.

Choose one trusted source

Start with a source that clearly distinguishes confirmed information from analysis and corrections. For health emergencies, the CDC and your state or local health department are examples of official sources identified in CDC guidance. For other events, use the public agency responsible for your area or a news outlet with transparent corrections and reporting standards. Do not rely on a headline notification alone to understand what action is required.

Set check-in windows

Pick times that do not collide with sleep, meals, focused work, or caregiving. A morning and late-afternoon check may be enough for ordinary news; an unfolding emergency may require more frequent checks. Outside those windows, write down the question you want answered instead of opening every alert. This preserves a reasoned check rather than an anxious reflex.

Use a stopping rule

Before opening the source, decide what you need to learn and how long you will stay. A timer can make the boundary visible. APA describes a 15-minute timer at the start of a social-media check as one example; it is an option, not a medically established limit. Stop when the timer ends, when you have the information needed for a decision, or when your physical stress is rising.

Step 3: Build screen-free periods into the day

The CDC’s “Managing Stress” guidance, dated May 12, 2026, says, “Take breaks from news and social media. It is good to be informed, but constant information about negative events can be upsetting.” Make that break concrete rather than waiting until you feel exhausted.

  • Keep phones and news screens away from the table during meals.
  • Create a no-news period before sleep and charge the phone outside the bedroom if practical.
  • Use a timer when social-media checking tends to continue after you intended to stop.
  • Leave the phone behind for a short walk, stretch, shower, or conversation.
  • Tell household members how to reach you for a genuine emergency while nonurgent notifications are muted.

If work or caregiving requires availability, define an exception: for example, allow calls from designated contacts while muting headline notifications. The goal is controlled access, not total disconnection.

Step 4: Calm the body after an upsetting alert

Turning off a push does not instantly erase the stress response. When you notice tight muscles, rapid breathing, a racing pulse, or an urge to keep checking, pause before consuming another update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Put the phone down and orient to the room. Name a few things you can see and hear.
  2. Slow your breathing. Take several comfortable, unforced deep breaths; do not strain to reach a particular count.
  3. Release physical tension. Stretch your shoulders, neck, hands, or legs, or take a brief walk.
  4. Write one sentence. Note the headline, what it makes you fear, and what action—if any—is required now.
  5. Connect with a trusted person. A calm conversation can interrupt the cycle of solitary checking.

These are ordinary coping supports, not a substitute for treatment. CDC also recommends making time to unwind, stretching or meditating, keeping a journal, spending time outdoors, and connecting with trusted people. The World Health Organization’s stress Q&A similarly advises limiting news time if it increases stress and emphasizes routine, sleep, connection, and exercise.

Step 5: Make social-media checking less automatic

Social feeds combine news with comments, speculation, videos, and personalized recommendations. That mix can make it difficult to tell whether you are learning something useful or repeatedly seeking reassurance. Before opening a feed, ask:

  • What specific question am I trying to answer?
  • Is this source the best place to answer it?
  • Do I need information now, or am I reacting to an interruption?
  • How do I usually feel after five or 15 minutes here?

Unfollow or mute accounts that repeatedly provoke you without adding reliable information. Move news apps off the first screen, sign out of secondary accounts, or use a written check-in plan. A pocket notebook can help you record a headline, question, or feeling without reopening the feed; it is a low-stakes aid, not treatment.

How to choose between continuous alerts and planned check-ins

Question Continuous push alerts Planned check-ins
How often are you interrupted? Whenever an app sends an update, including duplicates. At times you choose, with urgent exceptions.
Is the information needed for immediate safety? Appropriate for selected emergency warnings. Appropriate for ordinary headlines and background updates.
Can you judge the source and context? A short notification may omit uncertainty or practical instructions. You can open the full report and compare it with an official source.
How do you feel afterward? Keep only alerts that do not create harmful, repeated activation. Adjust the timing or duration if checking still leaves you distressed.

What to do during an active emergency

Do not use stress reduction as a reason to ignore instructions. If authorities issue an evacuation, shelter, health, or weather warning, read the complete message and follow the directions for your location. Once you have acted, mute commentary and duplicate alerts so you can focus on the next verified update. Ask a trusted person to monitor official channels if you are caring for someone or cannot safely check your phone continuously.

When to seek professional support

Contact a mental-health professional or trusted health-care provider if distress continues for several days, keeps worsening, disrupts sleep, or prevents normal work, school, caregiving, eating, or other daily routines. CDC’s emergency-preparedness guidance specifically recommends professional help when feelings persist for several days or interfere with ordinary activities.

If you are in the United States and in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services. Outside the United States, use your country’s crisis service or emergency number.
