Start by treating the port as a suspect, not a proven cause. Check which app is using the battery, test the phone in Safe Mode, and remove or force-stop the port if its activity tracks the symptoms. A recent Android update, another downloaded app, or normal post-update optimization can produce similar behavior. Keep Google Play Protect enabled, and do not factory-reset the phone until reversible app-level steps and a backup are complete.
First, record the details and protect the phone
Before changing settings, note the Pixel model, Android version, port name and version, where you downloaded it, how it was installed, and when the drain or crashes began. Port-specific compatibility depends on those details, and there is no single compatibility rule for every unofficial feature port.
If the phone is unusually hot, losing charge rapidly, repeatedly restarting, or becoming difficult to control, stop using the port. Uninstall it when the phone remains stable enough to do so. Do not keep running a potentially unstable app merely to collect more observations.

- Keep the phone connected only to chargers and cables you normally trust.
- Save important photos, messages, authenticator exports, and other data before any advanced repair.
- Do not disable security warnings or install a second “fix” from an unverified source.
Check whether the port is actually using the battery
Battery percentage alone cannot identify the cause. Google’s Pixel instructions start with the per-app report:

- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Labels can vary slightly by Android release.
- Review the app list and open the port’s entry. Compare foreground and background use with other recently installed apps.
- If another app is at the top, investigate that app instead of assuming the port is responsible.
- Open the listed app’s battery controls and leave general battery optimization set to Optimized unless a specific compatibility reason requires another setting.
A port that shows unusually high background activity while the drain occurs is a useful lead, not conclusive proof. Battery reports can reflect work triggered by another process, a recent update, or setup activity.
Normal battery changes after an update
Google states: “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” The explanation is that the phone is downloading and optimizing software. Google advises seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days. After new-device setup or a factory reset, Google says battery optimization can take a few weeks to take effect. Those are support time frames, not guarantees; a phone that is hot or losing charge rapidly needs attention sooner.
Use Pixel battery diagnostics when available
Google identifies battery diagnostics as available on Pixel 6 and later. If your model offers that option in Battery settings, run it and record the result. It can help distinguish a general battery condition from an app-specific pattern, but it does not establish that a particular unofficial port is safe or compatible.

Apply the least disruptive app fixes
Force-stop the port
From Settings > Apps, select the port, choose Force stop, and confirm. Watch the phone through the period when the drain or crashes normally occur. Force stopping is temporary: the app may start again after a reboot or another app invokes it.
Restart normally
Restart the Pixel after force-stopping the app. A restart clears a stuck process and lets you see whether the symptom returns without immediately changing other settings.
Check legitimate updates, then remove the port if needed
Check Android updates in Settings > System > Software update, and check the port’s own trusted maintainer for a release that explicitly supports your Pixel model and Android version. Do not assume an update exists merely because the app is crashing. If the maintainer has no verified compatible release, uninstall the port from its app-information screen. Removing the app is preferable to repeatedly reinstalling unknown builds while troubleshooting.

After uninstalling, restart and use the phone normally. If the symptoms stop, that is evidence of a connection but still does not prove whether the port itself, its installation method, or an interaction with another app caused the failure.
Use Safe Mode to separate downloaded-app problems from system problems
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. It is a diagnostic test for crashing, freezing, unexpected restarts, and severe slowness; it is not a permanent operating mode.
Pixel 6 and later
- Press Power + Volume Up to open the power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off or Restart.
- When the Safe Mode confirmation appears, select OK.
Pixel 5a and earlier use a different button sequence and menu path. Follow the Safe Mode instructions shown for your exact model in Google’s Pixel Help documentation rather than applying the Pixel 6 sequence to an older phone.

Safe Mode may remove some home-screen widgets and automatically turn on Airplane mode. Restore your network connection after the test if necessary.
Interpret the result

Remove other recent apps methodically
If Safe Mode is stable, return to normal mode by restarting. Then work backward through apps installed or updated near the time the problem began.

- Uninstall one recent app.
- Restart the phone.
- Use the phone long enough to reproduce the normal workload and check Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Only after that observation, remove the next suspect.
Changing several apps at once hides the cause and makes it harder to know which removal helped. If reinstalling an app brings the failure back, treat that as a repeatable compatibility signal and leave it removed until its maintainer documents a fix.

Keep Play Protect and unknown-app permissions under control
Google recommends leaving Play Protect on. It scans apps from the Play Store and checks apps installed from other sources. It may warn about, deactivate, or remove an app it considers potentially harmful. Treat a warning as a security signal and stop using the flagged app while you verify its source. A warning does not mean that every unofficial feature port is malicious, but bypassing the warning is not a routine troubleshooting step.
Once the port is removed or no longer needed, revoke the installer permission that allowed it:
- Open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
- Select the browser, file manager, or other app that was allowed to install the port.
- Turn off Allow from this source.
Google notes that apps from unknown sources can put the phone and personal information at risk, including possible damage or data loss. Use the port’s official maintainer channel, if one exists, to verify any replacement package; do not rely on a reposted download link.
What to do when the problem persists
When Safe Mode does not help
If the same crashes or drain occur with downloaded apps disabled, do not state that the port is responsible. Check for pending Android updates, record the exact times and battery-usage entries, and contact Pixel support. If you seek help from the port maintainer, provide the Pixel model, Android version, port version, installation source and method, crash symptoms, and whether the problem occurs in Safe Mode. Those details are more useful than a general report that the phone is “laggy.”
When a reset is justified
Factory reset belongs to advanced troubleshooting, not the first response to an unofficial app. It removes installed apps and their associated data. Before using it, back up data, confirm that you know your Google account credentials, and make sure two-factor authentication or recovery methods will remain available after the reset. A reset can remove the current app conflict, but reinstalling the same problematic app can bring the issue back.
- Complete the battery-usage check, force-stop or uninstall tests, Safe Mode test, and update checks.
- Back up data and verify that the backup is accessible.
- Reset only through the Pixel’s system settings or the documented recovery procedure for your model.
- After setup, test the phone before restoring every app. Reinstall apps selectively so a recurrence can be identified.
A practical decision path
- High heat or rapid loss: stop using the port and remove it as soon as the phone is stable.
- Port leads Battery usage: force-stop it, restart, then uninstall if the pattern returns.
- Drain began immediately after Android update: allow a few days for optimization while monitoring; escalate if unusual drain persists.
- Crashes stop in Safe Mode: remove recent downloaded apps one at a time, restarting after each.
- Crashes continue in Safe Mode: broaden the diagnosis and seek support rather than blaming the port without evidence.
- Play Protect warning: stop and verify the app; do not routinely bypass the warning.
- Nothing else works: back up first, then consider a factory reset as an advanced step.
The Bottom Line
Use evidence before making a drastic change: identify the app in Battery usage, test crashes in Safe Mode, remove the port or other recent apps one at a time, and keep Play Protect enabled. Reserve a factory reset for persistent problems after a verified backup.
