If Android says an unknown Bluetooth tracker is moving with you, treat the alert as a prompt to investigate—not proof of who placed it or why. Open the alert, move to a safe public place if you feel threatened, preserve the evidence, and disable the tracker itself only when doing so is safe.
1. Put your safety before finding the device
An unknown-tracker alert can indicate that a compatible tag or set of headphones that is not yours has been traveling with your phone. It can also have an innocent explanation: the device may be attached to something you borrowed, or another person traveling with you may own the tracker.
The alert does not identify who placed the tracker, establish intent, or prove that anyone is targeting you. If the circumstances make you feel unsafe, do not search alone or confront anyone. Go to a busy public location, contact someone you trust or local law enforcement, and preserve the alert and map while it is safe to do so.

Save screenshots of the notification, its map, the tracker name or identifier, detection times, and any instructions shown under Next steps. Android deletes unknown-tracker alerts after 48 hours, so screenshots can retain details that may be useful to you or an investigation.

2. Open the alert and interpret the map correctly
Tap the notification to open its map. The map represents places where Android detected the tracker traveling with your phone. It does not show where the tracker’s owner checked its location. A point on the map therefore documents detection by your phone, not the owner’s movements or the identity of the person carrying the device.
Use the map as a route to retrace only if doing so will not put you at risk. A borrowed bag, a vehicle passenger’s belongings, or a tracker traveling with someone nearby can all create an alert. Investigate the physical device and your surroundings rather than treating the map as proof of malicious behavior.
3. Check that your Android version and settings support alerts
Unknown-tracker alerts are available on Android 6 and later. Google’s current documentation lists Find Hub network-compatible tags and headphones, plus Apple AirTags, as supported categories; not every Bluetooth device is covered.

Automated alerts are not necessarily immediate. Android evaluates multiple factors and requires physical movement with the tracker over time. Google also documents one alert per tracker per day. A tracker that has only recently separated from its owner, is out of Bluetooth range, has an owner nearby, or has changed its device ID may not produce a sound or an immediate alert.
4. Try to locate the tracker without increasing your risk
Use Play sound
In the alert, tap Play sound. Follow the sound only if your surroundings are safe. Google says playing the sound does not notify the owner. If you hear nothing, move through nearby areas and try again; the tracker may be out of Bluetooth range, hidden in an item, or using a different device ID.

Use Find nearby when it is offered
For compatible Find Hub network trackers, open Next steps > Find nearby. The feature provides proximity guidance as your phone gets closer. It is not available for every tracker type, so the absence of this option does not by itself mean the alert is invalid.
Search ordinary hiding places
If it is safe, check the belongings that have traveled with you:
- Pockets, coats, shoes and luggage.
- Backpacks, purses and borrowed bags.
- Seat cushions, glove compartments and other parts of a car.
- Packages, equipment or clothing that came from another person.
Do not dismantle property, enter a private area, or confront a suspected person to complete the search. If you find the device, photograph it in place before moving it when that can be done safely.
5. Run a manual scan when the alert does not locate it
A manual scan looks for a tracker that is currently nearby and separated from its owner. It is a snapshot of proximity, not proof that the device traveled with you. The result could be a misplaced tag, a tracker belonging to someone close by, or a device that is temporarily away from its owner.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Choose Unknown tracker alerts.
- Tap Scan now.
- Wait about 10 seconds for the scan to finish.
Repeat the scan after moving to another safe location or after checking your belongings. A tracker can be outside Bluetooth range in one spot and detectable in another. On older Android versions or phones with customized menus, use the equivalent unknown-tracker section under Google safety settings.

6. Identify the device and preserve evidence
When a tracker is found, open Next steps for device-specific instructions. An AirTag can provide additional information when you hold it near the back of an Android phone. Other compatible devices may display an identifier or owner information through their identification instructions.

Keep screenshots and photographs in their original form. If law enforcement becomes involved, these details can help establish when and where the device was detected.
7. Decide whether disabling the tracker is safe
Disabling the tracker stops future location updates from that device, but the owner may still see the last location recorded while it was operating. Turning a tracker off can also factory-reset some models, potentially removing information that law enforcement could use.

There is no universal Android switch that disables every tracker. Use the instructions for the specific device you found, and ask law enforcement or a trusted support service for help if you are uncertain.
8. Phone settings do not stop the tracker
Turning off Bluetooth on your phone, turning off Location, or enabling Airplane Mode does not prevent the tracker from sharing its own location through its network. Google Android Help states: “You can’t stop a tracker’s ability to share its location when you turn on airplane mode or turn off Bluetooth or location services on your phone.”

Those settings affect your phone’s radios and location services; they do not switch off a separate tracker. To stop future reporting, the tracker itself must be disabled according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
9. If you cannot find the tracker
A failed search does not prove that the device is gone. It may be hidden in a bag or car, outside Bluetooth range, silent because its owner is nearby, or operating under a changed device ID.
- Move to a safe location and review the alert map.
- If safe, retrace the route shown on the map and inspect belongings.
- Run another manual scan; repeat it after changing locations.
- Keep the screenshots and detection details.
- Seek help from a trusted person, local law enforcement or a relevant safety service if you remain concerned.
If the tracker is still detected the following day, Android may issue another alert. A later alert with a different identifier can still be related because trackers change their random device IDs regularly; compare times, routes and physical circumstances instead of relying on the identifier alone.

Android’s system is designed to reduce false alarms, so it considers movement and other signals rather than notifying on every nearby Bluetooth transmission. Google documents one alert per tracker per day, and an alert requires the tracker to move with your phone over time.

- The tracker may have been separated from its owner only recently.
- The owner may be nearby, which can affect whether the tracker rings.
- The tracker may be outside Bluetooth range when you search.
- The device ID may have changed, causing Android to treat it as a new tracker.
- The device may not be a tracker category supported by Android’s alert system.
These limitations explain why a missing alert is not proof that no tracker is present. They also explain why a manual scan and a later alert can show different information.

11. Understand what Android processes
Google says unknown-tracker alerts use location information, detection timestamps and a tracker device ID. That information is processed and temporarily stored in encrypted form on the device and is not shared with Google or other users, according to the Android Help guidance.
Google’s Find Hub acceptable-use policy says: “You may not use Find Hub to track people or track property that does not belong to you.” The policy also says law enforcement may request additional identifying information to support an investigation. If you report a suspected stalking or theft situation, provide the saved alert, map, identifier and photographs.
12. Get regional safety support
Google identifies WESNET Safety Net Australia, Refuge UK and the Safety Net Project in the United States as additional resources for people worried about safety. The cited Android guidance does not provide a complete list for every region. If you are elsewhere, contact local victim-support services, a domestic-abuse or stalking service, or law enforcement that can advise you confidentially.

13. A practical decision path
Use this sequence to choose the next action without sacrificing safety:

- Still no device: inspect belongings and run the approximately 10-second manual scan.

- Need future updates stopped: disable the tracker itself only after considering safety, the owner’s last recorded location and possible loss of evidence.
