First, check whether the application is still a draft or has been successfully submitted. If it is only a draft, correct or complete it before submitting. If it has been submitted, use the official immigration authority’s instructions for your destination country and exact visa type: some authorities accept updates, while others require a new application. Do not withdraw or submit a duplicate until you have checked the consequences for fees, timing, and your status.
1. Check whether the application was submitted
Sign in through the destination country’s official government portal and look for a submission confirmation, reference number, application status, messages, or a request for documents. A saved draft is not the same as a submitted application.
If the form remains a draft, return to it, fill in the missing information or correct the error, and review the entries before submitting. If you cannot tell whether submission succeeded, check the account and official messages before starting another application.
2. Find the instructions for your exact visa
Start from the government immigration website for the destination, then navigate to the page for your visa category. Look specifically for instructions on correcting information after submission, providing additional documents, withdrawing an application, and reapplying. A procedure for one visa or country does not necessarily apply to another.

Use the authority’s stated account tools, web forms, upload functions, or contact channel. Do not rely on an unsolicited message or an unverified application site, and do not send personal documents through an email address or channel the authority has not approved.
3. Report an error or missing document
If the application is submitted, report the problem promptly using the channel named in the official guidance. State what is incorrect or missing, provide the correct information, and attach supporting evidence if the authority permits it. Keep the explanation factual and consistent with your documents.

A missing document, an incorrect answer, and an application for the wrong visa program can have different remedies. Check which situation applies before taking action. For example, Canada’s immigration authority (IRCC) says applicants can report certain changes and submit an error correction or omitted information through its web form while an application is in progress. It may return an application as incomplete if a required document is missing; applicants may then be able to apply again with the omitted document. eTA applicants should send new documents only when IRCC requests them. 4. Decide whether to correct, withdraw, or reapply
Before withdrawing or filing another application, establish whether the existing one can be updated or supplemented, whether a decision has been made, and what withdrawal or reapplication would mean for fees, processing, travel plans, and your lawful status. If the authority advises you to submit a new application, refer to the earlier application number and explain the resubmission where the form allows it.

5. Keep records and watch for updates
- Save the submission confirmation, reference number, payment receipt, and copies of the application and uploaded documents.
- Keep copies of messages to and from the authority, together with upload confirmations and the dates you contacted it.
- Monitor the official account and the email address associated with the application, including its junk folder, for requests or decisions.
- If a deadline, your current lawful status, a planned travel date, or your eligibility could be affected, seek qualified advice promptly for that country and visa type.
