If an online retailer refuses to refund the difference after an item goes on sale, first check the retailer’s written price-adjustment terms and the promise shown when you bought the item. In the United States, a later lower price does not by itself create a general federal right to a refund of the difference. Your strongest case is usually a policy-covered request supported by an order record and dated proof of the lower price.
Do not treat every refusal as a credit-card dispute. A policy decision is different from a wrong charge amount, merchandise that was never delivered, or deceptive conduct. The correct next step depends on which of those situations actually occurred.
First identify what kind of problem you have
“Price adjustment,” “price protection,” and “refund the difference” usually describe a request to the same seller after its price drops. A “price match” usually concerns a competitor’s price, although some retailers use the terms differently. Read the policy that applied to your order rather than relying on the label.
This guidance is U.S.-focused. The retailer, your state, purchase date, product category, payment method, and exact wording shown at checkout can change the result. It is general consumer information, not individualized legal advice.

The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance tells shoppers to find out whether they can get “a credit or refund if the item you buy today goes on sale next week.” That advice is a reminder to check the seller’s terms, not a statement that federal law requires every post-purchase adjustment.
Step 1: Confirm that the facts match a sale-price adjustment
Verify it is the same seller and the same item
Open the order confirmation and compare it with the current listing. Confirm the seller name, model or SKU, size, color, quantity, condition, and included accessories. A marketplace order may have been fulfilled by an independent marketplace seller rather than the platform itself; the applicable terms can be different.
Record the relevant dates
Write down the order date, shipment or delivery date if relevant, the date you saw the lower price, and the date on which you contacted customer service. Some policies use the purchase date, shipment date, or delivery date to calculate a window. Do not assume a standard seven-, 14-, or 30-day period exists; the seller’s actual terms control.
Separate a retailer sale from a competitor price
If the original retailer itself now lists the item for less, look for a price-adjustment or price-protection provision. If another merchant is cheaper, look for a separate price-match provision. A competitor’s offer may be excluded when it is a marketplace listing, clearance item, coupon price, membership price, bundle, or limited-time promotion.

Step 2: Read the policy and checkout terms
Check the retailer’s current policy and, if you saved it, the version displayed when you purchased. Policies can distinguish sale items from full-price items and may contain exclusions or stricter return rules. Look for these details:
- Adjustment window: the number of days, if any, between purchase and the request.
- Eligible seller: the retailer’s own inventory, a marketplace seller, or an approved competitor.
- Product exclusions: clearance, closeout, open-box, refurbished, seasonal, personalized, bundled, subscription, gift-card, or limited-quantity items.
- Promotion rules: whether coupons, loyalty discounts, rebates, financing offers, or membership prices count as the lower price.
- Condition and quantity: whether the item must be identical, in stock, unopened, or limited to one adjustment per order.
- Form of compensation: a payment-method refund, store credit, gift card, or another remedy.
- Request method: online form, chat, telephone, email, or a particular department.
The FTC advises shoppers to check sale-item return policies and keep receipts and confirmation emails. If the policy is ambiguous, save the exact wording and ask the retailer to explain how it applies to your order rather than arguing from a general expectation.
Step 3: Build an evidence file before contacting the retailer
Save copies rather than relying on a page that may change. Your file should contain:

- The order confirmation, receipt, invoice, or account order page.
- A dated screenshot or saved copy showing the lower price, item identity, and any promotion conditions.
- The price-adjustment or price-match policy, including exclusions and the page date if available.
- Any checkout disclosure or promise about a future sale, if one was shown.
- Shipment, delivery, cancellation, and return records when they affect eligibility.
- Chat transcripts, emails, case numbers, and the names or identifiers of representatives who handled the request.
Keep the original files and note when each screenshot was taken. A screenshot without the item description, seller identity, or promotion terms may not establish that the lower offer was for the same product.

Step 4: Make a precise written request
Use a channel that leaves a record when possible. Identify one order and one item at a time. State the original price, the lower price, both dates, and the policy section you believe applies. Ask for the exact exclusion or deadline if the request is denied.
I bought [item] on [date] for [price]. The same item is now listed by your store for [price] as of [date]. Your [policy name/link] appears to cover this purchase. Would you apply the price adjustment? If not, please point me to the term or exclusion that applies.Attach the order confirmation and dated price evidence if the channel permits it. Ask whether the remedy would be returned to the original payment method or issued as credit. Keep your message factual; threatening a chargeback before identifying a legitimate billing-error ground can make a routine policy request harder to resolve.
When the retailer refuses the request
Ask for the reason, not a generic apology
Request the specific policy clause, exclusion, or timing rule used to deny the adjustment. If the representative cites a page, save that page. Ask whether a supervisor or written review is available, especially when the policy language appears to cover an identical item within its stated window.

Compare advertising, checkout text, confirmation emails, and the formal policy. A banner that says “price protection” may have conditions elsewhere. Conversely, a specific written promise may matter if it conflicts with a broad or hidden exclusion. Preserve both versions and the dates you saw them.
Decide whether the issue is still contractual or has become a conduct concern
A seller may lawfully decline a discretionary adjustment when no policy or promise covers it. A refusal becomes more concerning when the retailer advertises a qualifying adjustment, accepts the request within the stated conditions, or uses disclosures that appear designed to mislead shoppers. That distinction matters before escalating to an agency or card issuer.

Do not use a card dispute as a general appeal
The Fair Credit Billing Act process described by the FTC covers specified billing errors on credit cards and revolving accounts. Examples include a charge for the wrong amount and goods or services not delivered as agreed. A retailer’s refusal to grant a later-price adjustment is not, by itself, proof that the original card charge was incorrect.
When a written billing dispute may fit
If the statement actually shows the wrong amount, the merchant charged twice, or the goods were not delivered as agreed, review your issuer’s formal dispute instructions. The FTC says written notice generally must reach the issuer within 60 days after the issuer sent the first statement containing the billing error. Verify the correct address, method, and documentation requirements with the issuer; do not assume the 60-day rule automatically governs every card-network process or every type of complaint.

- Your name, account details requested by the issuer, and the transaction date and amount.
- A clear description of the billing error, stated separately from your dissatisfaction with a sale price.
- Copies of the statement, receipt, delivery records, and your communications with the seller.
- The remedy you are requesting, such as correction of an incorrect charge.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that some claims and defenses against a card issuer have conditions involving the purchase location and amount. Those limited rules should not be presented as a general statutory right to recover any post-purchase price difference. Contact the issuer to ask which procedure, if any, fits your actual facts.

If the retailer never ships the order, or the goods are not delivered as agreed, the issue is not merely that the item later went on sale. FTC guidance states that when a seller does not ship an order, it must provide a full refund. Keep the order, promised delivery date, cancellation request, and seller response. If the seller does not resolve the non-delivery, ask your card issuer about the applicable billing-error process and its deadlines.

Escalate suspected deception proportionately
If the written terms appear to cover your request, a specific promise was not honored, or the disclosures seem deceptive, preserve the evidence and contact the consumer-protection office serving your state or locality. Explain the timeline and attach the policy, advertisement, order record, and refusal. An agency complaint can help identify patterns or prompt review, but it does not guarantee that the agency will obtain an individual refund.
For suspected scams, the FTC directs consumers to report them through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Use a complaint to describe verifiable conduct, not simply to pressure a retailer over a policy disagreement.

Common mistakes that weaken a legitimate request
- Assuming every retailer has the same adjustment window.
- Using a competitor’s price when the policy covers only the retailer’s own sale.
- Omitting the item identifier, promotion conditions, or date from the evidence.
- Relying on a current policy when the purchase was governed by different terms, without saving either version.
- Calling a policy refusal a “fraudulent charge” when the card was charged exactly as authorized.
- Missing an issuer’s written-dispute deadline while continuing a retailer chat.
- Expecting a government complaint to guarantee a personal refund.
A practical final checklist
- Confirm whether the lower price came from the same seller or a competitor.
- Identify the exact item, order, seller, and relevant dates.
- Read the adjustment or price-match terms, including exclusions and remedy.
- Save the order, policy, dated lower-price proof, and all communications.
- Send one concise written request that cites the policy and asks for a specific explanation if denied.
- Use a card dispute only when the facts fit a genuine billing error or non-delivery procedure.
- For a potentially deceptive promise or conduct, preserve the record and contact the appropriate consumer-protection office.
The key question is not simply whether the item became cheaper. It is whether the retailer promised an adjustment, whether your purchase satisfies that promise, or whether a separate billing, delivery, or deception issue gives you another route.
