Stop using the equipment if a correctly specified replacement fuse blows again. Do not fit a larger fuse, bridge the fuse with wire or foil, or keep switching the equipment on. “EZ80” identifies a rectifier valve, not a particular appliance or a universal fuse specification. Find the exact equipment model, confirm its marked fuse current, voltage, physical size and time-delay characteristic, and arrange model-specific diagnosis if the correct fuse fails again.
First response: make the equipment safe
A fuse that fails once can be the result of a temporary event, an incorrectly specified replacement or an existing fault. A second failure after you have installed the correct fuse is a stop signal. Remove power and do not continue replacing fuses to see whether the next one survives.
- Switch the equipment off and disconnect it from the mains where this can be done without touching damaged parts.
- Do not increase the fuse rating, use a different fuse style, or substitute wire, foil or another metal link.
- Do not open an unknown valve or mains-powered device, and do not probe its internal circuitry unless you are trained and have the equipment-specific service information.
- Arrange inspection by a suitably qualified electronics or vintage-equipment repairer, especially if there is scorching, a burning smell, heat damage, arcing, a damaged power cord or repeated fuse failure.
The Icon Audio PS3 Mk II manual states, “Should the replacement fuse also blow there is a fault.” The WAV Models 80/81 operation manual gives the same practical message: a persistent fuse problem must be rectified before operation continues. Those instructions are model-specific, but the safety principle applies when the exact device is not yet known.

EZ80 is a valve designation used in more than one circuit. It does not identify one product, one mains voltage or one fuse rating. The research examples include an EZ80/EZ81 listing in an Icon Audio PS3 Mk II and a separate valve power-supply design in which an EZ80/CV4 could be used as V1 under a stated secondary-current condition. These are different designs with different electrical requirements.

Consequently, a search for an “EZ80 fuse” cannot safely produce a universal answer. The fuse belongs to the equipment and its power supply, not to the valve name printed on the glass. Before purchasing anything, record the equipment’s make, model, supply-voltage version and the fuse designation printed beside the holder or in the manual.
Verify every part of the fuse specification
Amperage is only one part of a fuse specification. Match every characteristic that the manufacturer gives. If a marking is missing or unreadable, stop and obtain the manual or ask a repairer rather than guessing.
| Characteristic | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Current rating | The stated value in amperes or milliamperes | A higher value can allow damaging current before the fuse opens; a lower value can blow during normal operation. |
| Voltage rating | The fuse voltage rating required by the equipment | The fuse must be suitable for the equipment’s supply and for safely interrupting the circuit. |
| Time characteristic | Anti-surge/time-delay or fast-acting, exactly as specified | Transformers and valve power supplies can have an initial inrush; the wrong speed can either nuisance-blow or delay protection. |
| Physical format | Cartridge dimensions, diameter, length, terminals and holder compatibility | A fuse that does not fit the holder correctly is not a safe substitute, even when its ampere number looks right. |
| Equipment version | The mains-voltage range and regional edition shown on the nameplate or manual | The same model family can use different ratings for different supply voltages. |
Check the manual and the label together. A replacement that matches only the current number is not necessarily the correct replacement.

Model examples: why ratings cannot be transferred
Icon Audio PS3 Mk II
The Icon Audio PS3 Mk II manual, revised 17 January 2020, lists an EZ80/EZ81 among the valves. For the mains version covered by that manual it specifies a 1 amp anti-surge fuse; it separately specifies 2 amp anti-surge for the USA 115-volt version. The manual’s troubleshooting instruction is explicit: “Should the replacement fuse also blow there is a fault.” Neither value is a recommendation for unidentified equipment. They apply only to the stated PS3 Mk II versions.

WAV Models 80/81
The WAV Maintenance & Performance Tests, Section 5, operation manual gives fuse ratings tied to its stated line-voltage ranges. That table demonstrates why a rating cannot be copied from one product to another, even when both products are valve-based or used in the same country. The WAV values belong to Models 80/81 and should not be used for an EZ80 device of another make or model.
A separate Flax Cottage valve PSU design
A September 2019 Flax Cottage design describes conditional use of an EZ80/CV4 as V1. In that particular circuit, the output fuse is 150 mA and the mains fuse is 1 A. The design also warns that replacing its rectifier valve with semiconductor diodes would create enough capacitor-charging surge to blow its 150 mA fuse. These figures and the diode warning describe that design only; they are not a general repair method for equipment whose EZ80 fuse keeps opening.
What repeated fuse failure does—and does not—tell you
The fuse is a protective device, not the underlying repair. Repeated failure tells you that the equipment is drawing abnormal current, experiencing an unsuitable inrush, or using a fuse that does not match its specification. It does not identify which component is responsible.

Possible causes depend on the complete circuit and the event that preceded the failure. A wrong current rating, wrong time-delay type, wrong voltage version or poor physical fit can all cause trouble. An internal power-supply or wiring fault can also be present. From the words “EZ80 replacement fuse keeps blowing” alone, it is not possible to distinguish a defective valve from a transformer, capacitor, switch, insulation or another part.

Do not assume the EZ80 is automatically at fault. The valve may be involved, but replacing it without checking the equipment’s specification and the rest of the circuit can waste parts and leave a dangerous fault energized.
Checks you can perform without opening the equipment
These checks are limited to identification and external conditions. They are not a substitute for electrical diagnosis.
- Record the identity. Write down the manufacturer, full model number, serial or voltage variant if shown, and whether the unit is intended for your local mains supply.
- Photograph the markings. Capture the fuse holder, rear-panel label, nameplate and manual page. Preserve the original markings before removing a blown fuse.
- Compare the replacement with the stated specification. Check current, voltage, dimensions and anti-surge/time-delay or fast-acting designation. Do not rely on a shop listing that merely says “for EZ80.”
- Inspect only external damage. Look for a cracked holder, melted plastic, darkened panel, damaged cord or obvious moisture. If any is present, leave the equipment disconnected.
- Stop after a correct replacement fails. Give the repairer the failed fuse, the exact replacement specification and a description of what happened: whether the fuse opened immediately, on switch-on, or after the equipment had operated.
Do not remove the chassis to search for a short circuit unless you are qualified for valve equipment and have the correct service procedure. Valve circuits can retain hazardous energy after power is removed, and an unknown design does not have a universal safe test sequence.

This information helps separate a specification mistake from a fault in the equipment. It also prevents a technician from treating an example rating from another EZ80 product as if it were yours.
Keep repair examples in context
A discussion of a Bush VHF54 restoration dated 18 December 2022 describes an EZ80 with a blown cathode and an HT short traced to carbonized insulation on a switch. This is one restorer’s account, not a prevalence study or a diagnosis for every EZ80 circuit. It is useful only as a reminder that a fuse symptom can involve equipment-level wiring or insulation rather than the rectifier valve alone.
No reliable statistic establishes how often EZ80 equipment blows fuses, and no general failure rate should be inferred from that anecdote or from the manuals.

Installing a larger fuse
A higher rating can allow fault current to continue long enough to damage the instrument. The WAV manual expressly cautions against this. Never treat a larger fuse as a test.

Using a fuse from another EZ80 product
The Icon Audio and Flax Cottage figures show why this fails: their circuits and ratings are different. A value that is correct for one device can be dangerously wrong for another.
Changing the rectifier to diodes as a quick fix
The Flax Cottage design’s warning about capacitor-charging surge applies to that design. It does not authorize a semiconductor substitution in an unidentified unit. Any rectifier change requires the equipment’s circuit information and a qualified assessment.
Assuming a new valve solves the problem
An EZ80 replacement may not address a fault elsewhere in the power supply. Repeated fuse opening requires diagnosis, not a sequence of unverified part substitutions.

Decision guide
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| The fuse marking is unreadable or the model is unknown | Do not guess. Obtain the manual, identify the model and ask a qualified repairer. |
| The replacement does not match current, voltage, size or time characteristic | Disconnect the equipment and obtain the exact specified fuse before any further test. |
| The correctly specified replacement blows immediately | Stop operation; treat it as an unresolved fault and arrange model-specific service. |
| The equipment shows heat, smoke, arcing, damaged insulation or a burning smell | Leave it disconnected and have it inspected. Do not install another fuse. |
| A repairer proposes a different fuse or rectifier arrangement | Ask for the change to be justified by the equipment’s service documentation and circuit requirements. |
The information needed for a device-specific answer
To determine the correct replacement, the missing facts are the equipment make and model and the fuse designation printed in its manual or on the equipment. The EZ80 marking alone is insufficient. Once those details are known, a technician or the manufacturer’s documentation can establish the exact fuse format, current, voltage and time characteristic and decide what testing is appropriate.
