Assume a suspected compromise is serious enough to contain now, but do not treat suspicion as proof of a breach. Use your incident-response plan, restrict the server’s network access, preserve volatile evidence and logs before shutting down or rebuilding, and rotate any credentials the host could read. Then determine how the attacker entered, what they accessed, and whether other systems are affected. Rebuild from a known-clean source only after evidence collection and scoping, and involve your security team, cloud provider, or a qualified incident responder for production systems.

The order matters: contain, preserve, scope, eradicate, recover, and harden. A GPU server can expose ordinary operating-system and cloud risks plus workload, orchestration, and hardware-management paths. The steps below cover cloud instances, managed GPU services, colocated machines, and on-premises servers without assuming they all provide the same controls.

Act in the first 15 minutes

  1. Activate the response. Name a response lead, open a written timeline, and use the organization’s incident plan. Record the current UTC offset or local timezone, the alert source, the server name, account, region, provider, and people involved.
  2. Use a trusted administration device. Do not investigate or rotate secrets from the suspected host. Establish an out-of-band channel if an intruder might be watching the host or its collaboration tools.
  3. Restrict reachability. Remove public access or reduce the host to the minimum responder access required. In a cloud environment, change security-group, network-ACL, firewall, or equivalent rules. On premises or in a colocation facility, coordinate isolation with network and facility operators.
  4. Contact the provider. Use a known-good support or security contact and ask the provider to preserve control-plane, network, storage, and management records. The provider may control isolation or evidence that a tenant cannot obtain.
  5. Do not reflexively power off, terminate, wipe, or rebuild. Those actions can destroy memory and other evidence. If isolation is impossible and the host is actively spreading damage, stopping the spread takes priority; record why and when the decision was made.

CISA’s #StopRansomware guidance is written for ransomware, not GPU incidents specifically. Its advice to isolate systems, use out-of-band communications, preserve snapshots, and consider volatile evidence is applicable here as general incident-response practice, not evidence that ransomware is present.

Contain the server without losing the investigation

Cloud GPU instance

Apply the narrowest network rule that stops unauthorized ingress and egress while leaving a documented path for responders. Preserve the old rule set before changing it. If the server is part of a cluster, isolate the node and review peer-to-peer paths; do not assume a security-group change on one instance protects every workload that shared its credentials or network.

Managed GPU tenancy

Ask the service operator which controls are tenant-managed and which require provider action. Request preservation of management-plane, hypervisor, storage, and network-flow records that are outside your console. Confirm whether stopping or deleting a workload also deletes its disks, snapshots, logs, or support records.

Colocated or on-premises server

Coordinate a switch-port, firewall, routing, or facility-level isolation with the network and operations teams. Keep a management path for evidence collection if it can be secured. If physical disconnection is required, photograph or otherwise record cable and port state before changing it.

CISA cautions that powering down can destroy volatile-memory evidence. Prefer network isolation, account restriction, and controlled evidence collection first. If immediate spread, destructive activity, or safety concerns make shutdown unavoidable, document the trigger and preserve whatever data can be collected beforehand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve evidence before cleanup

Evidence disappears quickly when a process exits, a container is recreated, a log rotates, or a cloud resource is deleted. Collection should be performed by responders who understand the operating system, cloud platform, and legal or contractual requirements. Use trusted tools and storage, and keep an access record for every collected item.

  • Volatile state: memory, running processes, open files, active network connections, loaded kernel modules, GPU processes, and current users, where safe collection is possible.
  • Host records: operating-system, authentication, SSH, sudo, scheduler, service, startup, application, container-runtime, and orchestration logs.
  • Cloud records: control-plane audit events, IAM activity, API calls, instance metadata changes, storage access, network-flow logs, snapshots, and support tickets.
  • Network and security devices: firewall, load-balancer, VPN, switch, router, intrusion-detection, and egress records.
  • GPU and management records: driver and workload events, unexpected jobs, firmware or controller changes, and management-controller logs.
  • Indicators: unfamiliar accounts or keys, modified startup files, scheduled tasks, new services, unexpected binaries, unusual containers, outbound connections, and access to secrets.

Create a timeline with timestamps including timezone, the actor, the exact command or console action, the affected resource, and the resulting state. For a cloud resource, take a point-in-time volume or disk snapshot before modification when the provider and responders can do so safely. CISA identifies memory and short-retention logs as volatile evidence and recommends cloud-volume snapshots for later forensic review.

For NVIDIA AI Cloud Partner environments, the framework lists front-end and back-end network telemetry, management- and host-network telemetry, VPC ingress and egress flow logs, BMC system-event logs, syslogs, and management logs. Those requirements apply to NVIDIA Cloud Partners; they do not prove that every provider exposes every telemetry type to every tenant. Ask your provider what exists, how long it is retained, and how to place it under preservation.

Revoke credentials the host could reach

Any secret readable or usable from the server is a candidate for compromise, even if no malicious use has yet been proven. From a trusted device, revoke or rotate credentials in a controlled order so you do not accidentally destroy evidence or interrupt containment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory cloud IAM users, roles, API keys, service accounts, temporary tokens, and instance or workload identities available to the host.
  2. Rotate SSH keys, administrator passwords, deployment keys, CI/CD tokens, repository credentials, database passwords, and secrets mounted into containers.
  3. Revoke credentials stored in configuration files, environment files, metadata, notebooks, job definitions, or shared volumes. CISA’s Androxgh0st advisory specifically calls for removing and revoking cloud credentials in Laravel .env files; the malware-specific context does not apply to every server, but the credential-handling lesson does when such files were exposed.
  4. Review use of each credential in the corresponding cloud, source-control, registry, database, and monitoring service. Look for new locations, unusual times, privilege changes, downloads, and resource creation.
  5. Disable accounts or keys that cannot be verified, and issue replacements with least privilege and MFA where supported.

Keep the original secret material out of incident notes. Record which identity was revoked, by whom, and at what time. If rotation could affect forensic collection or a running workload, coordinate the sequence with the response lead.

Establish the entry point and blast radius

Build one timeline from provider, identity, host, network, workload, and management records. Classify what is established separately from what is only suspected: unauthorized login, exploitation of an exposed service, stolen credentials, malware, cryptomining or resource abuse, a misconfiguration, or an unconfirmed alert.

Questions the timeline must answer

  • Which public service, administrative interface, credential, or trusted connection provided initial access?
  • Which accounts, roles, containers, nodes, storage systems, and management interfaces were used?
  • Did the intruder establish persistence through users, SSH keys, scheduled tasks, services, startup files, orchestration objects, images, or firmware?
  • Did the host move laterally, create new resources, alter network rules, or access other tenants or clusters?
  • Which files, datasets, model artifacts, repositories, registries, databases, and secrets were read, changed, staged, or exfiltrated?
  • Do outbound destinations, data volumes, and timestamps support a transfer, or is exfiltration still unknown?

Examine cloud audit events, network-flow data, workload and orchestration records, storage access, host logs, and management-plane access together. Identify every system that could have accepted a credential from the GPU server. Preserve copies before short-retention records roll over.

A sudden GPU-utilization spike, an unexpected job, or degraded performance is an investigation lead, not proof of compromise. Validate the symptom against process lists, job histories, network activity, identity events, and provider records before attributing it to an attack.

Include GPU and hardware-management paths

GPU software is only one part of the attack surface. Drivers, container runtimes, schedulers, cluster control planes, cloud APIs, and out-of-band management can each provide access or persistence.

NVIDIA DGX H100 and H200 systems

On these systems, the baseboard management controller (BMC) is a distinct management interface. Check BMC accounts, authentication events, configuration changes, firmware activity, and routes to the management network if the system is in scope. NVIDIA’s DGX guidance says:

“NVIDIA recommends that you connect the BMC port in the DGX H100/H200 system to a dedicated management network with firewall protection.”

“If remote access to the BMC is required, such as for a system hosted at a co-location provider, it should be accessed through a secure method that provides isolation from the internet, such as through a VPN server.”

Eradicate persistence and recover from a known-clean state

Wait until evidence is preserved and the likely scope is understood before cleaning. Deleting one suspicious file or passing a malware scan does not demonstrate that a system is clean.

  1. Remove persistence. Delete unauthorized users and keys, scheduled jobs, services, startup changes, containers, orchestration objects, registry artifacts, and other mechanisms identified during scoping.
  2. Fix the entry point. Patch the exploited software, close the exposed service, correct the identity or network policy, and remove the vulnerable image or package.
  3. Find related compromise. Apply the same indicators and credential review to connected hosts, clusters, storage, repositories, CI/CD systems, and management networks.
  4. Choose a recovery source. Use a backup or image believed to predate the intrusion and validate its provenance. If no trustworthy image exists, build a fresh system from verified operating-system, driver, GPU-stack, container, and workload sources.
  5. Recreate secrets. Do not copy suspect credentials or configuration files containing them into the rebuilt host.
  6. Test before reconnecting. Confirm patches, firewall rules, identity changes, MFA, management-network isolation, logging, monitoring, and alerting. Reconnect gradually and watch for the indicators found during the investigation.

NIST Special Publication 800-61 Revision 3, published in April 2025, supersedes Revision 2. It describes eradication actions such as removing persistence, disabling compromised accounts, correcting vulnerabilities, and identifying affected hosts and services. Recovery can include restoring clean backups, rebuilding systems, replacing compromised files, patching, and changing passwords. When a sophisticated intrusion’s full scope remains unknown, NIST notes that hardware replacement may be necessary.

“Incident response is a critical part of cybersecurity risk management and should be integrated across organizational operations.”

Harden the exposure before returning to service

  • Disable public-facing services and ports that the workload does not require.
  • Restrict administration to trusted networks or a VPN; do not expose SSH, dashboards, APIs, or BMC interfaces directly to the internet.
  • Apply least privilege, MFA, short-lived credentials, and separate administrator identities.
  • Patch internet-facing software, drivers, firmware, images, and orchestration components, then scan for configuration drift.
  • Keep BMC or equivalent out-of-band management on a dedicated, firewall-protected network separated from workload and public networks.
  • Send identity, cloud, host, network, workload, GPU, and management events to centrally retained storage with a retention period appropriate to investigations.
  • Alert on new keys, privilege changes, unusual resource creation, unexpected outbound destinations, new containers, and access to management interfaces.

CISA recommends reducing unnecessary services, patching internet-facing systems, using MFA, and regularly reviewing exposed systems. If a service must remain public, limit it to the required function and monitor it continuously.

Choose actions by hosting model

Environment First containment control Evidence to request or preserve Who must coordinate
Cloud instance Security groups, network ACLs, firewall rules, and instance isolation Control-plane audit events, disk or volume snapshot, flow logs, IAM activity Security lead, cloud administrator, provider security team
Managed GPU tenancy Tenant network policy plus provider-side isolation Provider management, hypervisor, storage, network, and support records Tenant response lead and service operator
Colocated server Facility switch, router, firewall, or remote-hands isolation Facility access, network-device, BMC, host, and provider logs Security, network, and colocation operators
On-premises server Internal segmentation, switch-port control, and firewall policy SIEM, authentication, endpoint, network, scheduler, and management records Security, infrastructure, and facility teams

The correct choice depends on who controls the network, whether volatile evidence is still available, how much lateral movement is possible, and whether a known-clean recovery source exists. Record the decision and its trade-offs rather than applying a single shutdown rule to every environment.

Escalate, preserve obligations, and notify carefully

Contact your security incident lead and provider promptly. Ask the provider to preserve relevant control-plane, network, storage, BMC, and support records and to coordinate isolation where it controls the host. Organizations without internal forensic expertise may engage a qualified incident-response or digital-forensics firm; production systems and suspected data access warrant professional handling.

NVIDIA’s AI Cloud Partner framework says an NCP should handle security incidents, preserve relevant logs and forensic evidence, and support joint investigation. For NVIDIA tenants in that framework, it specifies notification no later than 24 hours for a high-severity incident or confirmed compromise and 72 hours for other incidents. Those are framework requirements for that relationship, not universal legal deadlines or a promise that every NVIDIA-based cloud deployment follows them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single reporting deadline for every organization. Legal, regulatory, insurance, customer, and contractual duties depend on jurisdiction, data involved, and agreements. Have the incident lead and counsel determine whether notification is required, to whom, and when. Do not announce a breach before the evidence supports that conclusion.

Common mistakes that make response harder

  • Rebuilding immediately: destroys memory, logs, and clues to the entry point.
  • Changing credentials on the host: gives an intruder another chance to intercept them and contaminates evidence.
  • Rotating one key and stopping: leaves service accounts, mounted secrets, CI/CD tokens, and cloud roles exposed.
  • Assuming the GPU symptom is the diagnosis: utilization and performance changes have benign causes and require corroborating evidence.
  • Ignoring the management plane: leaves BMC or equivalent interfaces outside the investigation.
  • Restoring an unverified backup: can reintroduce persistence.
  • Reconnecting after a scan: omits network, identity, patch, logging, and monitoring validation.
  • Treating a provider’s retention promise as universal: retention and notification duties vary by provider and contract.

The Bottom Line

Contain the exposed GPU server, preserve volatile and provider evidence, rotate every reachable credential, and scope connected systems before cleaning. Recover from a verified clean source, isolate the management plane, and reconnect only after the exposure and monitoring gaps are fixed. If the server supports production workloads or sensitive data, involve your incident-response team and provider immediately.
