If an Ethereum drop triggers a margin call, act in the account that holds the leveraged position: check the live risk metric and maintenance requirement, confirm whether the position is still open, and identify any platform restriction. If the venue still permits changes, reducing exposure or adding eligible collateral can increase the buffer, but neither action guarantees safety. If liquidation has started, controls may be restricted or the process may be impossible to cancel.
Afterward, reconcile the account statement and order history. Confirm which positions closed, realized losses, fees, remaining exposure and any deficit or account restriction. Thresholds, collateral rules and liquidation mechanics differ by exchange, product and jurisdiction; no single ETH price is a universal liquidation price.
First, establish what is happening now
A falling ETH chart does not by itself tell you whether your account is in a margin call, close-out process or completed liquidation. Open the exact futures, perpetual, options or spot-margin account that holds the position rather than relying on a portfolio summary from another account.

Record current equity, used or initial margin, maintenance margin, margin level, margin ratio or the platform’s equivalent metric. Take a screenshot with the time visible.
- Check the position state. Confirm size, direction, entry price, mark price, unrealized PnL, leverage and whether any part has already closed.
- Check notifications and restrictions. Look for a margin-call banner, liquidation warning, reduce-only status, trading suspension, deficit flag or a notice that open orders were canceled.
- Review collateral. Verify which assets count, their current valuation, available balance and whether a transfer is pending. A wallet balance that is not eligible for that product does not improve its margin.
- Inspect open orders. Stops, take-profit orders and limit orders can reserve margin or change your exposure. Check whether they remain active and whether the venue canceled them.
Do not use a different exchange’s percentage as a decision rule. A “margin ratio” can be defined differently from a “margin level,” and the same percentage can represent different risk on different products.

Understand the metric before changing the position
Maintenance margin
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity a venue requires to keep a leveraged position open. It can change with position size, volatility, instrument, tier, funding or overnight rules. Liquidation estimates therefore move even when ETH’s last traded price has not changed.
Margin level and margin ratio
Some venues express safety as a margin level; others show a ratio. Coinbase US derivatives defines margin ratio as maintenance margin required divided by total equity. Under that definition, a ratio of 100% or more is liquidation territory. A lower ratio indicates more equity relative to the requirement, but you must use the definition displayed by your own account.
Portfolio-maintenance metrics
Portfolio-margin systems can aggregate positions and collateral into a separate score. Binance Portfolio Margin documents uniMMR states: a margin-call notice at or below 1.5, reduce-only mode at or below 1.2, and a liquidation call at or below 1.05. These are Binance Portfolio Margin rules, not thresholds for every Binance product or any other exchange.

If the position is still open
Once you know the current metric and restrictions, choose between reducing risk and adding collateral only if the account permits the action and you understand the amount at risk.
Reduce the position
Closing part or all of the leveraged position lowers the notional exposure and usually lowers the maintenance requirement. Use the platform’s normal close or reduce-only control when available. Confirm the resulting size and risk metric after the fill; an order that is open but unfilled has not reduced risk. In a fast market, a market order can execute at several prices, while a limit order can remain unfilled as ETH continues to fall.
Add eligible collateral
Depositing or transferring an asset accepted by the account can increase equity and move the estimated liquidation point farther away. Kraken’s futures educational material describes adding collateral and reducing a position as ways to move liquidation risk farther away. This is not a guarantee: a sharp move can overtake the adjustment, and the deposited funds become exposed to the same leveraged account. Confirm the asset, network, crediting time, haircut and conversion rules before transferring.

Review orders that consume margin
Open orders may reserve collateral or create additional potential exposure. If the platform offers a cancel-all or reduce-only control, read the confirmation carefully and verify the result in the risk panel. Do not assume that a stop order will always execute before liquidation; a stop can be triggered late, fill at a different price or be canceled under venue rules.
Do not make an unverified transfer during a fast move
Blockchain confirmation, internal transfers and collateral conversion can take time. A pending deposit is not available equity. If the account’s liquidation engine acts before the funds are credited, the transfer cannot retroactively protect the position.
If liquidation has started
When a venue marks a position for liquidation, it may cancel orders, switch the account to reduce-only, close positions in stages or block trading. Follow the status shown in the account rather than repeatedly submitting orders that the engine will reject.

Kraken’s US spot-margin support information states that liquidation is automated and, once initiated, cannot be stopped. Its valuation uses CF Benchmarks reference index prices, which can differ from a venue’s displayed price and from the price at which a liquidation order executes. That example illustrates why a chart price alone cannot reproduce a liquidation event.
Do not assume that adding collateral after initiation will work. If the control is disabled or the status says liquidation is in progress, preserve evidence and wait for the process to settle before attempting a new position.

Thresholds are comparable only when the metric, collateral model, account type, product and jurisdiction match. An 80% margin level is not mathematically interchangeable with a 100% margin ratio or a uniMMR value of 1.2.

What to check after a liquidation
- Wait for the account to finish processing, then refresh all views. Liquidation orders and fees may post separately from the initial status message.
- Open the position history. Identify every partial or full close, execution price, quantity, timestamp and order type.
- Read the daily or account statement. Coinbase advises reviewing the daily futures statement for orders, realized losses and fees, then checking the current margin ratio.
- Check for remaining exposure. A partial liquidation can leave a position open. That position continues to generate PnL and still requires maintenance margin.
- Look for a deficit or restriction. Resolve an active deficit flag before opening new positions. Do not transfer more money until you understand whether the amount is a deficit, a fee, a temporary hold or an unsettled loss.
- Reconcile collateral. Compare balances before and after liquidation, including any asset conversion, haircut, funding payment, liquidation fee or interest charge shown by the venue.
Save screenshots, downloadable statements, order IDs, notifications and timestamps. If the execution appears wrong, contact the venue through its official support channel with that record. The applicable contract and jurisdiction determine any review or reimbursement process; there is no universal crypto-liquidation complaint procedure.
Why your liquidation estimate can change
- Maintenance tiers: A larger position can move into a higher maintenance-margin bracket.
- Collateral valuation: Haircuts, index prices, conversion rates and volatility can change the equity credited to the account.
- Funding, interest and fees: Charges reduce equity or increase the amount required to maintain the position.
- Overnight rules: Coinbase US derivatives notes that overnight margin rates may increase requirements even without an ETH price move.
- Open orders and correlated positions: New potential exposure can raise requirements in a portfolio-margin calculation.
- Execution spread: The liquidation engine may use a mark or index price for triggering and a different execution price for closing.
For these reasons, a liquidation estimate is a moving risk indicator, not a guaranteed ETH price. A displayed estimate can change between refreshes and can be overtaken by a gap or rapid move.
A safer operating plan for future leveraged trades
Before opening
- Read the product’s maintenance-margin schedule, collateral list, fee schedule and liquidation policy for your jurisdiction.
- Identify the exact metric and write down its warning, reduce-only and liquidation states.
- Decide the maximum account loss and position size before placing the order; do not size from the maximum leverage alone.
- Keep a separate cash reserve rather than assuming every asset in the account is eligible collateral.
While the position is open
- Monitor equity, maintenance requirement and available margin, not just the ETH price.
- Set alerts as an early warning, but treat them as convenience features. Kraken’s margin-level article says notifications are not guaranteed.
- Recheck risk after funding payments, large fills, collateral transfers, volatility spikes and overnight rollovers.
- Know how to close with a reduce-only order and where the account’s emergency controls are located before you need them.
When conditions deteriorate
- Reduce exposure first if the order can be filled and the remaining risk is unacceptable.
- Add collateral only after confirming eligibility and transfer speed, and only with money you can afford to put at risk.
- Do not average down automatically or open a new position while a deficit, restriction or liquidation state remains unresolved.
Questions that cannot be answered with one ETH price
The liquidation price depends on leverage, position size, direction, maintenance tier, collateral composition, fees, funding, mark or index pricing and the venue’s rules. Two traders holding the same ETH contract can therefore have different liquidation estimates. Use the live calculation in the account that holds the position and verify the assumptions behind it.
