Stop sending money, cryptocurrency or identity documents until you verify the message through the platform’s official app or website. A restriction may be a compliance review, account-security event, payment dispute, terms-of-service action or an impersonation scam. Confirm which part of the account is restricted, open a written case with the provider, preserve evidence and then escalate to the appropriate Australian body.
Take these actions before doing anything else
- Pause all activity. Do not pay a supposed release fee, tax or “verification deposit”. Do not send additional crypto, bank transfers, identity documents or one-time codes in response to an unsolicited message.
- Verify the contact independently. Open the provider’s official mobile app or type its known web address yourself. Do not use a link in an unexpected email, text message or social-media direct message. Compare any notice with messages shown inside your authenticated account.
- Secure access from the official channel. Change the platform password, turn on multifactor authentication, review recent logins and API keys, and revoke sessions or keys you do not recognise. If you suspect compromise, save messages and account details before deleting anything.
- Open a written support case. Ask the provider to identify the exact restriction, the general policy category, the documents required, the review or appeal process and a realistic date for the next update. Keep the ticket number.
- Provide only necessary information. Upload identity or source-of-funds records only through the verified support portal or in-app process. Never disclose a seed phrase, private key or one-time authentication code.
These steps protect both your assets and your evidence. A genuine review can continue through an authenticated channel; a scammer loses the opportunity to pressure you into an irreversible payment.
Identify what “frozen” actually means
“Frozen” is not a single technical state. Record exactly what you can and cannot do, then ask the provider to confirm it in writing.

Do not infer criminal conduct from a generic “compliance” label. Ask which category applies and whether the restriction concerns login, trading, deposits, withdrawals or all services.

Why an Australian platform may restrict an account
Compliance and transaction monitoring
AUSTRAC publishes suspicious-activity indicators for virtual-asset service providers. Examples include unusual transaction patterns, use of anonymising or platform-enabling services, and reports that an account is connected with fraud or scams. Those indicators can prompt a review; they do not prove that the customer committed an offence. The provider may limit activity while it checks identity, transaction history or the source of funds.
Account-security event
A new device, stolen password, unusual login or compromised API key can trigger a protective lock. In this situation the priority is to secure the account and preserve the security trail, not to argue about a compliance decision. Ask whether the provider can restore access after its security checks and whether any pending withdrawals were cancelled.
Bank or payment dispute
A chargeback, reversed transfer, payment-fraud alert or mismatch between the payer and the account holder can affect deposits and withdrawals. The bank and the crypto provider may each hold different information. Obtain the bank’s reference number and ask the platform which transaction is under review.

Provider terms or operational controls
A platform can apply restrictions described in its customer agreement, including geographic, product, verification or risk controls. Request the relevant policy category and the version of the terms that applied when the action occurred. Do not assume that a policy-based hold has the same appeal route or timing as a suspected account takeover.

Impersonation by a scammer
A message may look like a freeze notice while the real account is unaffected. The scammer’s objective is usually to make you send money, credentials or identity documents to an address they control.
Tell a genuine hold from a release-fee scam
AUSTRAC says it will never ask you to pay a fee or tax to authorise release of funds to your bank account. A demand for payment, cryptocurrency or personal details by email or phone is therefore a major impersonation warning. AUSTRAC also states, “You cannot report scams to AUSTRAC.” Use the reporting services described below instead.
- Pressure and secrecy: a sender insists that you act within minutes, keep the matter confidential or move the conversation to an encrypted chat.
- Payment to unlock your own money: a tax, clearance charge, insurance payment or refundable deposit is requested before withdrawal.
- Untrusted destination: you are told to send crypto to a new wallet, personal bank account or “recovery” address rather than withdraw through the authenticated platform.
- Impersonated authority: the message claims AUSTRAC, a bank, police or a regulator has ordered the freeze and asks you to pay that organisation directly.
- Unsafe document request: the sender asks for a seed phrase, private key, one-time code or a full copy of identity documents outside the provider’s verified support workflow.
Do not call the phone number or click the link in the suspicious message. Use contact details you obtained independently, and check whether the same notice appears after you sign in through the official app or typed web address.
Secure the account and build an evidence pack
Evidence is most useful when it preserves the sequence of events and shows which service was affected. Create a dated folder and save:

- the freeze notice, sender address, message headers where available and screenshots of account warnings;
- support tickets, ticket numbers, chat transcripts and every provider response;
- the provider terms that were in force when the restriction began;
- transaction IDs, wallet addresses, blockchain timestamps, deposit and withdrawal requests;
- bank statements, payment references, dates and amounts;
- identity-verification submissions and source-of-funds material; and
- a chronology noting each contact, promised action and missed update.
Redact passwords, seed phrases, private keys and one-time codes before sharing the pack. Keep the original files privately so you can demonstrate what was sent and when. If personal information may have been exposed, change reused passwords on other services and monitor accounts connected to the same email address.
Make a precise written complaint to the provider
A clear complaint reduces back-and-forth and creates the record an external dispute body will need. State the account identifier without including credentials, the date and time access changed, the functions affected and the practical outcome you want.
Subject: Formal complaint about account restriction
Account identifier: [your account email or customer number]
Restriction began: [date and time, including time zone]
Functions affected: [login, trading, deposits, withdrawals or all]
Please confirm:
1. the restriction currently applied;
2. the general policy category or reason;
3. every document required and the secure submission method;
4. the review, appeal and internal-dispute steps; and
5. the date by which I will receive the next written update.
Please provide a case number and preserve the account and transaction records relevant to this complaint.Send only the minimum documents needed for the stated review. Ask the provider to acknowledge receipt and identify any document that is unreadable, incomplete or inconsistent so you can correct it without repeatedly resubmitting sensitive information.
Escalate through the right Australian channel
Choose the route based on who controls the money, what happened and which organisation has jurisdiction. Keep the provider case open while you escalate unless an authority tells you otherwise.

AFCA eligibility and timing
AFCA says consumers experiencing issues with a cryptocurrency or digital-asset provider should first try to resolve the complaint directly with the firm. Its 1 October 2026 announcement says more digital-asset users can access its free, independent service where the provider is an AFCA member. Membership and jurisdiction must be checked for the specific firm; not every crypto platform or every digital-asset dispute is automatically eligible.
When you lodge, include the provider’s final response, or explain why the internal process has stalled, together with your chronology, account records, transaction evidence and the outcome you seek. AFCA can assess the dispute only on the information and jurisdiction available to it, so distinguish platform-held crypto from money held by a bank.

Crypto transfers are generally irreversible. AUSTRAC advises using only an account or wallet you control and warns that sharing account details or sending crypto to an address you do not control can result in loss. If a provider restores withdrawals, confirm the destination address character by character and make a small test transfer only if the provider’s normal process supports it.
Treat anyone promising recovery for an upfront crypto payment as a potential follow-up scam. A person who already knows you lost funds may impersonate a lawyer, investigator, regulator or exchange employee. Do not give that person remote access, your seed phrase, private key or a “temporary” transfer to prove ownership.

If a bank payment is still pending, contact the bank immediately; speed can affect whether a transfer or card transaction can be stopped. For a completed blockchain transfer, provide the transaction ID and destination address to ReportCyber and the affected platform, but do not assume that a report can reverse the transaction.
What to expect about review times
There is no single Australian deadline or guaranteed release time for every crypto-platform freeze. The provider’s terms and the facts of the review control timing. Ask for a written timetable and the condition that will end the restriction, such as completion of a particular verification step. If the promised date passes, send a dated follow-up, request the provider’s final response and then use the appropriate external route.
A decision guide for the next 24 hours
- Only an unsolicited message claims the account is frozen: do not respond or pay; verify inside the official app and report the impersonation through Scamwatch.
- The platform account is inaccessible or shows unusual activity: secure credentials and sessions, preserve evidence, and contact verified support.
- Crypto withdrawals are blocked after a verification request: submit the minimum documents through the authenticated channel and request the review category and timetable.
- A bank transfer or card payment is involved: complain to the bank in parallel with the platform complaint and keep both reference numbers.
- Identity documents or personal data were exposed: contact IDCARE, secure other accounts and include the exposure in your provider and crime reports.
- The provider’s internal process is exhausted: check AFCA membership and jurisdiction, then lodge with AFCA if the dispute is eligible.
A freeze is safest to handle as an evidence and verification problem: stop irreversible actions, identify the exact restriction, communicate only through authenticated channels, and escalate according to who controls the asset and what event caused the loss.
