If a Motorola phone’s Android update fails, first retry it from the phone’s System Updates screen over Wi-Fi with enough battery to finish. If no update is offered, it may not have reached your exact model or carrier yet. Motorola’s Windows-PC Software Fix Rescue option is a more extensive fallback, but it factory-resets the phone and erases personal data, so back up before using it.
Retry the update safely from your phone
- Note your phone and error details. Record the exact model, carrier, current Android version or build, and any error message. Update availability and menu labels vary by model, region, carrier, and software version.
- Open the system update screen. Motorola’s general path is Settings > (System > Advanced) > System updates > Check for updates. The path may differ on your phone. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen instructions. Motorola explains how to check for updates and why availability varies.
- Retry over Wi-Fi and ensure the phone has enough battery. Motorola recommends Wi-Fi because updates can be large, and its user guide advises having enough battery to complete the installation. Motorola does not specify one battery-percentage threshold that applies to every model. Motorola’s update guidance and Motorola’s user guide cover these precautions.
If no update is available, check rollout timing
A missing update does not necessarily mean the phone is broken or that the installation failed. Motorola says Android releases are tested across phone models, regions, and distribution channels, and may depend on carrier or partner certification. As a result, rollout dates can differ even for users in the same region. Check update information for your exact model and carrier rather than repeatedly trying to force an update. Motorola describes the factors that affect update availability.
Choose between another phone update attempt and Rescue
Motorola distinguishes a standard over-the-air (OTA) update, which applies specific parts of the phone’s software, from Software Fix Rescue, which runs a full software update. The two routes differ in equipment, scope, and data risk:

Use Motorola Software Fix Rescue only after backing up
Rescue is a computer-based fallback if the OTA route continues to fail. Motorola describes Software Fix as a PC client that connects to the phone over USB and can run a software update and hardware tests. The Rescue process requires a Windows PC, USB cable, and internet connection. Motorola lists Rescue’s requirements and scope; its Software Fix page provides the official PC client information.
Important: Rescue erases personal data. Motorola says Rescue updates Android to the current version and resets the phone to factory defaults. Downloaded apps, photos, text messages, and other personal data will be removed. Back up what you need before starting, and make sure you know the Google account previously used on the phone: Motorola says that same account must be used during initial setup after Rescue. When to contact Motorola or your carrier
If Rescue is unavailable for your phone, fails to complete, or the update problem continues, contact Motorola support or your carrier with the model, carrier, current software version, and exact error wording. Motorola notes that some problems require hardware repair, so a full software update may not resolve every issue. Motorola’s troubleshooting guidance addresses when further support may be needed.
