Act immediately: save the order and agent records, ask the seller and agent platform to stop or cancel fulfillment, notify your bank or card issuer, and revoke the agent’s purchasing access. Tell each party exactly whether you gave no permission, gave limited permission that the agent exceeded, or authorized the purchase and now want to return it. That distinction affects which remedies and deadlines may apply.
Do not wait for the parcel to ship or for a formal deadline. Keep copies of every message, case number and form, and treat any exposed account or payment credential as a possible security incident.
First 30 minutes: contain the transaction
Work through these steps in order, but do not delay the payment-provider call while waiting for a seller response. A pending authorization, posted charge, shipped parcel and delivered item can each require a different remedy.

Save the full agent conversation, your original instruction, any spending ceiling or other condition, the payment notification and the platform support case number. Preserve the records before deleting a conversation, closing an account or resetting the agent.
- Contact the agent platform and seller. Say that the order was not authorized, or that it exceeded the authority you gave the agent. Ask the seller to stop fulfillment and cancel the order or issue a refund. Ask the platform to document the incident and give you a case number. Cancellation is not guaranteed after processing or shipment, so request written confirmation of what happened.
- Contact the payment provider. If the transaction is pending or posted, tell the bank, card issuer or wallet provider that the order was unauthorized or outside the agent’s authority. Ask how to open a dispute, what evidence is required and whether the card, token or account should be frozen or replaced. Follow the provider’s written procedure and deadline.
- Cut off further agent spending. Revoke purchase permission, disconnect saved payment methods and shopping integrations, and disable automatic checkout. Change the agent-account password if takeover is plausible, sign out other sessions and turn on available multifactor authentication and transaction alerts.
- Continue in writing. Send the original instruction and transaction details through the provider’s secure message system or another traceable channel. Keep copies of correspondence, dates, submitted forms, decisions and promised refund dates.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s practical advice is direct: “Contact your bank or card provider immediately if you suspect an unauthorized debit or charge.”

Identify which kind of problem you have
Use accurate wording. Calling an in-scope purchase “fraud” can weaken a legitimate return request, while describing an unauthorized transaction as a simple change of mind can delay security action.
No purchase permission was given
Tell the seller, platform and payment provider that you did not authorize the order. If someone accessed your agent, shopping account or payment credential, describe it as a possible account-compromise incident and ask for protective measures immediately. Do not approve a replacement order while the investigation is open.
The agent had permission but exceeded a limit
State the exact delegation: for example, a maximum price, a particular item or seller, a quantity limit, or a time window. Explain how the completed order breached that condition. The original instruction, the agent’s confirmation and any authorization log can help establish what the agent was allowed to do. Payment providers and emerging agent-commerce contracts increasingly treat consent, scope and records as relevant evidence.

That is normally a cancellation or return request under the seller’s terms and applicable local law, not an unauthorized-payment claim. Ask the seller about cancellation, return shipping, restocking charges and refund timing. Do not tell the issuer that a validly authorized purchase was fraud simply because the item is unwanted.
You do not recognize the charge or any agent order
Treat it as possible payment-account compromise. Report it to the issuer promptly, ask whether the credential must be replaced, review recent transactions and secure connected shopping accounts. An unexplained charge may have no connection to an AI agent at all.

Stop fulfillment and request cancellation
What to send the seller
Use a short, factual message containing the order number, transaction date, amount and your authority statement:
I did not authorize order [order number]. The agent was permitted to [limited instruction, if any], but this transaction exceeded that permission because [specific difference]. Please stop fulfillment, cancel the order if possible, and confirm the outcome and refund method in writing.If the order is already shipped, ask whether delivery can be intercepted, refused or returned. Keep the tracking number and follow the seller’s return instructions. Do not assume that refusing delivery automatically creates a refund; obtain the seller’s written process.

What to ask the platform
- Which agent action initiated checkout and at what time?
- What instruction, approval or spending rule did the platform record?
- Can purchase permission, tokens and connected stores be disabled immediately?
- What is the support case number and escalation route?
Request an export of relevant logs if the platform offers one. A platform’s internal terms may allocate responsibilities differently from your card agreement, so keep both sets of records.
Dispute the payment without overstating the facts
Tell the issuer the transaction status (pending or posted), payment type, date, amount and why it was unauthorized or outside the agent’s authority. Ask whether a provisional credit, payment stop, chargeback or other dispute process applies. Submit the order record, your original instruction, the agent transcript, seller correspondence and the platform case number when requested.
Credit card
If only the credit-card account number was stolen, CFPB consumer guidance says the consumer generally has no liability for unauthorized use. If the physical card was lost or stolen and used before notice, federal law limits liability to $50 in the described circumstances; many card agreements provide stronger protection. These are U.S. rules tied to the facts of the transaction, not a worldwide guarantee. Report the event immediately even when you expect zero liability.

Debit card or another electronic transfer
Ask the bank which electronic-transfer rule applies and follow its notice instructions. Under a CFPB regulation, one tier uses a two-business-day notice period after learning that an access device, such as a debit card, was lost or stolen. Another specified situation uses a 60-day period after the statement showing the unauthorized transfer was sent. Late notice can affect liability for later transfers. The two-day and 60-day figures are U.S.-specific examples and depend on the instrument and facts; they are not universal deadlines.

Digital wallet, prepaid card or other method
Contact the wallet or issuer through its official dispute channel and ask for the applicable policy. The cited U.S. card rules do not automatically cover every wallet balance, prepaid product, bank transfer or buy-now-pay-later arrangement. Ask whether the wallet token can be suspended while the investigation proceeds.

Secure every connected account
An accidental checkout can be a software error, but it can also reveal a stolen session, leaked token or compromised shopping account. Take containment steps even when the seller agrees to cancel.
- Revoke the agent’s authority to buy, place bids, subscribe or reorder.
- Remove saved cards, bank accounts and wallet tokens from the agent and connected stores.
- Change passwords for the agent, shopping account and email account if compromise is plausible; use unique passwords.
- End unfamiliar sessions and review recent sign-ins, API keys, browser extensions and connected applications.
- Enable multifactor authentication, login alerts, purchase alerts and low transaction limits where available.
- Check for new orders, subscriptions, address changes, gift-card purchases or saved recipients.
There is no single universal platform procedure for these controls. Menu names differ, so use the platform’s current security and payments settings and obtain help through its official support channel.
Build an evidence file that proves authority and timing
Create one folder containing the original instruction, the agent’s response, checkout confirmation, payment alert, seller terms, cancellation request, support transcripts and issuer correspondence. Record the date and time of every call, the representative’s name or reference number, and the promised next step.

Preserve context, not just the final message. A spending rule such as “up to $100,” “one unit,” “only this seller” or “buy today” may show that the agent acted outside its scope. Conversely, an explicit approval screen or confirmation may show that the purchase was authorized. Do not edit screenshots; export native logs when available and keep the original files.
Keep delivery evidence, too: tracking events, photographs, refusal records and return receipts. If the seller issues a partial refund, note the amount and date and dispute only the unresolved balance.
What U.S. timing rules do—and do not—mean
The CFPB’s 2020 regulation page gives the two-business-day and 60-day notice examples described above. They apply to specified electronic-transfer situations, not every unauthorized AI-agent order. The CFPB’s 2024 consumer answer describes the $50 maximum federal liability for the particular lost-or-stolen physical credit-card scenario; it does not make every payment dispute a $50 case.
Contact the provider as soon as you learn of the problem rather than waiting for the outer limit. Ask for the exact deadline in writing, especially if the charge is recurring, the account is prepaid, the payment was made through a wallet or the transaction crossed borders. A provider may impose contractual steps in addition to statutory requirements.

The U.K. Competition and Markets Authority’s research describes consumer-facing agents as early and bounded, with limited authority and frequent human escalation. Its business guidance published 9 March 2026 says: “But if an AI agent you use does something illegal, you are responsible.” That sentence is business guidance and context, not a universal rule that every consumer must pay for every unwanted agent order.

Payment arrangements are also unsettled. Stripe service terms allocate certain unauthorized-agent-transaction responsibilities between Stripe and platform users and call for auditable records of customer consent and authority; those are contractual terms for service participants, not automatic consumer rights. American Express has described future protection for eligible purchases involving registered agents and authenticated purchase intent. Its information stated that some specifications were available as of 14 April 2026 while agent-registration and cart-context specifications remained under development. Confirm current eligibility directly with your issuer.
The Reserve Bank of Australia reported that stakeholders still viewed chargeback liability and proof of agent authority as unresolved issues. Your country’s consumer law, card network rules, platform terms and seller policy may therefore produce a different result from a U.S. example.
Escalate when the first response fails
- Reply through the issuer’s stated complaint or reconsideration process, attaching the original decision and missing evidence.
- Ask the seller or platform for a supervisor review and a written explanation of the authority record used to approve checkout.
- Contact the relevant consumer-protection or financial-ombudsman body in your country if the provider’s internal process is exhausted.
- For a material loss, cross-border transaction or disputed authorization record, obtain advice from a qualified local consumer or payments lawyer.
Keep escalation factual: identify the transaction, the permission you gave, the exact deviation, the dates of notice and the remedy requested. Avoid threatening language that obscures the evidence.
Prevent the next unauthorized agent order
Once the incident is contained, redesign the agent’s authority instead of granting unrestricted checkout access.
- Use a low spending ceiling and require human approval above it.
- Limit purchases by item category, quantity, seller, delivery address and time window.
- Require a final confirmation that shows the item, total, taxes, shipping and recurring terms.
- Use a dedicated payment token or virtual card with a low limit when your issuer supports it.
- Turn on instant transaction and login alerts and review connected apps monthly.
- Keep agent logs and approval records long enough to cover the seller’s return period and the payment provider’s dispute window.
No verified official statistic establishes how many unauthorized orders AI shopping agents create. Forecasts about the growth of agentic commerce should not be presented as an incident rate. The practical protection is controlled authority, visible confirmation and a preserved audit trail.
