Pause before you act. Treat a confusing, contradictory, or alarming answer from an AI health assistant as unverified information—not a diagnosis, prescription, or clearance to delay care. Do not change a medicine, start a treatment, or ignore symptoms because a chatbot sounded confident.
Write down what the assistant said, gather your symptoms and medicine details, and contact a qualified clinician or pharmacist. If the situation could be urgent or is getting worse, use your local urgent-care or emergency service instead of asking the AI more questions.
Take these steps before doing anything the assistant suggested
1. Stop the proposed action
Do not follow an AI recommendation that involves changing a dose, stopping or starting a medicine, combining products, delaying an appointment, or deciding that a symptom is harmless. If you have not acted, simply pause. If you already acted and are worried about the result, tell a health professional exactly what you did and when.

Ask whether the person is severely unwell, deteriorating quickly, or may need immediate assessment. A possible overdose, a serious reaction after taking something, rapidly worsening symptoms, or an inability to stay safe should be handled through your local urgent-care or emergency route. Do not wait for another chatbot reply. Emergency pathways and telephone numbers differ by country, so use the service your local health authority designates.

3. Save the answer and the context
Copy the complete conversation, including the question you asked, any warning the assistant displayed, the date and time, and the exact recommendation. Screenshots are useful if the service later edits or hides the exchange. Keep the wording intact; a short paraphrase can remove a qualification that matters to the clinician.
4. Contact a qualified professional
For a non-urgent question, contact the person’s doctor, nurse, clinic, or pharmacist. Explain that an AI tool gave advice you cannot safely interpret and ask what to do next. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises contacting a health care provider before following medical advice found online; an AI-generated answer deserves the same caution.
Choose the right care route
| Situation | Best next route | What to provide | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| The answer is unclear, but symptoms are stable and no treatment change is pending | Routine or prompt appointment with a clinician or pharmacist | The AI wording, your symptoms, timing, medicines, and the question you want answered | The professional—not the AI—decides whether the advice is appropriate |
| The answer could cause a medicine error, treatment delay, or unsafe combination | Contact a qualified professional before taking the next dose or making the change, unless local emergency guidance tells you otherwise | Product name, strength, amount, time taken, other medicines, allergies, and relevant conditions | Do not use a second AI answer as a “tie-breaker” |
| Symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or potentially life-threatening | Local urgent-care or emergency service now | Current symptoms, onset, location, medicines or substances involved, and the saved AI exchange | Do not wait for an online consultation or another chatbot response |
| You are in England and need urgent advice but the situation is not an immediate emergency | NHS 111 by telephone or NHS 111 online | Answer the service’s symptom questions and follow its routing instructions | NHS 111 online is for England and does not provide a diagnosis |
Outside England, use the equivalent government or health-system urgent-advice service in your location. A service’s availability, hours, and authority vary; do not assume that an England-specific option applies elsewhere.

Prepare a useful handoff for the clinician
A clear handoff lets a professional spend time assessing the health issue rather than reconstructing an incomplete chat. The NHS explains that patients can send symptom information to a GP surgery for review, and the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology recommends checking record details such as symptoms and medicines.
- Describe the main problem in one sentence. For example: “I developed a new rash two hours after taking the second dose, and the assistant told me to take another tablet.” Use ordinary words and identify the person affected.
- Give a timeline. Include when symptoms began, whether they are improving or worsening, what happened immediately beforehand, and every dose or product taken. Use clock times and dates when possible.
- List medicines and relevant health information. Include prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, supplements, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding status when relevant, and important conditions. Record the name, strength, amount, and last time taken rather than just “painkiller” or “antibiotic.”
- Show the exact AI exchange. Include the assistant’s answer, not only the sentence that worried you. Point out contradictions, missing assumptions, or instructions you do not understand.
- Ask a specific safety question. Examples include “Should I take the next scheduled dose?”, “Do these symptoms require assessment today?”, or “What information should I monitor while waiting?” Let the clinician set the plan.
- Confirm the plan before ending the contact. Repeat the agreed action, timing, warning signs, and who to contact if the situation changes. Ask what to do if you cannot reach the usual clinician.
You can keep these details in a paper notebook or a simple symptom-tracker journal. It organizes information for an appointment; it does not verify the AI response or replace medical assessment.
Why a confident AI answer can still be wrong
Language models are designed to produce plausible text, not to establish that a medical claim is true for a particular person. The World Health Organization warns that large language models can produce responses that appear authoritative and plausible but may be completely incorrect or contain serious errors, especially for health-related questions. Its statement is available in WHO’s 16 May 2023 guidance on safe and ethical AI for health.

Fluent wording, a long explanation, or a list of medical terms does not demonstrate that the system considered your age, examination findings, test results, allergies, kidney or liver function, pregnancy status, or interactions between medicines. A chatbot may also misunderstand a misspelled product name or infer a condition from incomplete symptoms.
Warning signs in the wording
- It gives a precise diagnosis without examining you or asking enough questions.
- It tells you to start, stop, split, double, or combine a medicine without confirming the product and strength.
- It uses absolute language such as “definitely safe,” “nothing to worry about,” or “you do not need care.”
- It gives conflicting instructions in different messages or changes its answer when you restate the same facts.
- It ignores a symptom, medicine, allergy, or condition that you included.
- It supplies a dosage or treatment duration but no reliable source, professional review, or explanation of who the instruction applies to.
These signs do not prove that every statement is false. They do show that the answer is not a safe basis for a consequential decision.

Handle medication and treatment decisions conservatively
Medication advice has a narrow margin for error. Until a qualified professional reviews the situation, do not make an unscheduled change solely because an AI assistant recommended it. Keep the packaging, label, prescription instructions, and dispensing information available so you can read the exact name and strength to the professional.
If you took the wrong amount, used someone else’s medicine, mixed products, or stopped a prescribed treatment, report the product, dose, time, and symptoms promptly through your local urgent-care or emergency channel. Do not attempt to “correct” the mistake with another AI-generated instruction. If the person is deteriorating, seek emergency help immediately.

Software that offers clinical decision support can fall under specific regulatory considerations, but regulation of a software function is not a guarantee that a particular consumer chatbot is clinically safe or regulated. The FDA’s clinical decision-support guidance describes how intended functions may be considered; it should not be read as approval of every health assistant.

Use urgent services correctly
England: NHS 111
In England, NHS 111 provides an urgent-advice pathway by telephone, and NHS 111 online can direct people based on symptoms. The online service is England-only and explicitly does not provide a diagnosis. Use the service’s questions to describe what is happening, then follow its routing advice. If the person appears to be in immediate danger, use the emergency route rather than waiting for an online assessment.
Other countries
Health systems use different names and thresholds for nurse lines, same-day clinics, poison advice, and emergency departments. Find the official urgent-care instructions for your country or region. A general-purpose AI cannot know which service is open, which medicines are stocked, or which legal and clinical rules apply where you live.
Protect sensitive health information
Before pasting a medical record, photograph, or identifying detail into an AI service, understand how the service stores, uses, and deletes data. WHO warns that an application may not adequately protect sensitive information users provide; its technical guidance on large multimodal models is available here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Remove names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, record numbers, and unnecessary dates of birth.
- Do not upload a full medical record when a short, de-identified description is enough to ask a general question.
- Never share passwords, insurance credentials, payment details, or someone else’s information without permission.
- Check whether the service uses conversations for training, how long it retains them, and whether you can delete them.
- Tell the clinician if the AI saw information that you did not include in the handoff, such as an uploaded image or document.
Privacy settings reduce exposure but do not turn an AI conversation into a confidential clinical record. Use the health service’s secure patient portal or established communication channel for personal medical details when available.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer fix |
|---|---|---|
| Asking several chatbots until one gives the desired answer | Different systems may repeat the same error or produce false reassurance | Save the conflicting answers and ask a clinician or pharmacist to resolve them |
| Removing the AI’s uncertainty before showing it to a professional | Omitted caveats can change the meaning | Share the complete transcript or screenshots |
| Using a symptom journal as proof that a diagnosis is correct | Tracking records observations but cannot interpret their cause | Use the log to support a professional assessment |
| Waiting because the assistant said the issue was probably minor | The model cannot examine you or monitor deterioration | Use the appropriate urgent-care route when symptoms worsen or seem serious |
| Posting identifiable details to improve the answer | Health information can be sensitive and may not be protected as expected | Minimize, de-identify, and use secure clinical channels |
A compact decision checklist
- Have I paused the recommended treatment or medicine change?
- Are symptoms severe, rapidly worsening, or otherwise potentially urgent?
- Do I know the exact product, strength, amount, and time involved?
- Have I saved the full AI conversation?
- Have I contacted the appropriate clinician, pharmacist, or local urgent service?
- Have I removed unnecessary personal information from any AI conversation?
- Do I understand what to do next and when to seek help if the situation changes?
The safe role for an AI health assistant is limited to helping you formulate questions, organize information, or explain general terminology. Decisions about diagnosis, treatment, medication changes, and whether urgent care is needed belong with qualified health professionals and the local services responsible for your care.
