If an AI detector flags your writing, don’t treat its score as proof of misconduct. Check the policy and deadline that apply, ask for the report and the specific passages at issue, preserve genuine records of how you wrote the work, and request a human review. A detector result can be mistaken; the institution’s policy and review process determine what happens next.
What to do first

Check the applicable policy and deadline
Read the course syllabus, academic-integrity policy, assignment instructions, workplace procedure, or publisher policy. Look for the review or appeal steps and any deadline, and note it immediately. Procedures differ by institution and setting; there is no single appeal deadline that applies everywhere.

Request the report and the passages at issue
Ask which detector was used, for a copy of its report, which passages it flagged, what its score represents, and what evidence—if any—supports the concern beyond the detector result. If the report is from Turnitin, distinguish its AI writing report from its similarity report: Turnitin says the AI percentage is independent of the similarity score. Preserve records that already exist
Keep the submitted version, drafts, document version history, notes, research records, assignment instructions, and relevant communications. Do not create or alter records to strengthen your account. If you used AI assistance in a way the rules permit or require you to disclose, describe that use honestly and retain relevant records you already have. You can ask what information is necessary before sharing sensitive account or personal data.

Respond calmly and factually
State that you believe the flag is inaccurate, explain your actual writing process, identify authentic records you can provide, and ask how to submit them. Ask who will review the concern and what the next step and deadline are. Keep a copy of your message and any reply.

Use the formal review or appeal route
Follow the procedure named by the institution or organization. If the first decision is adverse, check whether there is a further appeal level or support available in your setting, such as a student advocate, union representative, or ombuds office. Availability varies.

Why a detector flag is not proof
AI detectors can misidentify human-written text. Turnitin cautions that its model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text, and says its result should not be the sole basis for adverse action. It describes the report as one data point for a reviewer to consider alongside other information, the reviewer’s knowledge of the student’s work, and the applicable policy. In its educator guidance, OpenAI reports that its own experimental detector labeled some human-written works—including Shakespeare and the U.S. Declaration of Independence—as AI-generated. It also notes possible disproportionate effects on some multilingual learners and on formulaic or concise writing. A 2023 study by Weber-Wulff and co-authors evaluated 12 publicly available tools and two commercial systems, including Turnitin, and concluded that the tools tested were neither accurate nor reliable; it also found that obfuscation reduced performance. That evaluation describes the tools tested at the time, not the performance of every current detector or version. Read the 2023 study.
How to interpret a Turnitin AI score
Turnitin describes its AI percentage as the share of qualifying prose in a submission that its model identifies as likely AI-generated, or likely AI-generated and then modified by an AI paraphrase tool. It is not a probability that a particular student cheated. The score is separate from the similarity score.

Turnitin says its AI writing detection is intended for qualifying prose in long-form writing and does not reliably cover non-prose such as poetry, scripts, or code, or short-form and unconventional writing such as bullet points, tables, and annotated bibliographies. Those limitations are specific to Turnitin’s report and should not be generalized to other tools.
In current Turnitin reports, a result above zero but below 20% is displayed with an asterisk rather than a precise percentage or highlighted passages. Turnitin says its testing found more false positives in the 0–19% range. Reports generated before July 8, 2024 may still show a numerical score in that range. This is a Turnitin-specific reporting threshold, not a universal detector error rate; product behavior may change. Turnitin’s guide to the report describes the current display.

What to say when you ask for a review
Keep your message concise and adapt it to the facts. Do not deny AI use if you used it, and do not claim that records exist if they do not.
Hello [name], I understand that the report raised a concern about [assignment or document]. I wrote the work myself [or briefly and accurately describe any assistance used]. Could you share the detector report and identify the passages at issue? I can provide [authentic drafts, version history, notes, or source records] to explain my writing process. Please let me know the applicable review or appeal procedure and deadline, and whether a person can assess the work alongside the detector result. Thank you.

What not to do
- Don’t treat the score as a verdict. Turnitin says its report is not definitive in isolation, and the applicable reviewer makes the misconduct determination under institutional policy. Its guidance on a high AI percentage likewise directs users to consider the report in context: Turnitin’s guidance on a high percentage.
- Don’t manufacture or edit evidence. Use genuine records that already exist and explain what they show.
- Don’t rely on a detector contest. Results from several public tools do not establish who wrote a text, and tools may disagree. Focus the review on the exact report, the relevant policy, your process, and the evidence a human reviewer can assess.
- Don’t share more private data than necessary. Ask what records are needed and how to submit them before providing sensitive account information or private conversations.
