If an AI chatbot gives a teen harmful advice, first find out whether they are in danger now or have acted on it. Stay with them if it is safe, listen without judgment, and bring in qualified human help. In the United States, call 911 for immediate danger or call or text 988 for crisis support. A chatbot is not a clinician, and its response should not be treated as reliable mental-health advice.
1. Check whether your teen is safe right now
Ask plainly and calmly: “Are you safe right now?” and “Did you do anything the chatbot suggested?” Find out whether there has been an injury, overdose, or other immediate threat to your teen or someone else. If there is immediate harm or danger, contact emergency services. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline advises calling 911 in an immediate emergency (988 contact instructions).
If you are in the United States and your teen needs urgent emotional support but is not in immediate physical danger, call or text 988, or use the Lifeline’s chat service. The service says it offers free, confidential, judgment-free care; a counselor listens, asks about safety, and may share resources (what to expect from 988). Outside the United States, use the local emergency number for immediate danger and find the crisis service available in your area; 988 is not a worldwide number.
If someone may be in immediate danger, do not leave the teen alone if it is safe for you to stay. If you cannot safely remain with them, get help from another trusted adult or emergency responders.

2. Talk without blame or interrogation
Thank your teen for telling you. Keep your voice steady and focus first on what they need, not on taking away a device or deciding consequences. You might ask:
- “What did the chatbot say?”
- “How did that answer make you feel?”
- “What would help you feel safer right now?”
- “Is there someone else you trust who you want us to contact?”
Listen without judgment and take the teen’s concerns seriously, even if the chatbot’s response seems obviously wrong to you. OpenAI’s caregiver guidance recommends asking about immediate safety, listening without judgment, and helping a teen contact a trusted person, qualified professional, or crisis helpline (APA guidance for parents about teens and chatbots). The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren guidance also encourages caregivers to ask whether a chatbot has said something creepy or false and to stay engaged with children’s AI use (HealthyChildren guidance on AI chatbots).

3. Connect them with qualified human support
When chatbot advice involves self-harm, suicide, serious depression, or another mental-health crisis, seek help from a licensed mental-health professional promptly. A family doctor or pediatrician can help assess what is happening and connect your teen with care. The American Psychological Association’s parent guidance advises seeking help from a licensed mental-health professional immediately in these situations (APA guidance for parents about teens and chatbots).

Singapore’s Ministry of Health says AI chatbots are not designed to address mental-health issues or provide treatment and may give misinformation or inappropriate responses in serious crises (Singapore Ministry of Health statement). The APA also cautions against relying on chatbots for mental-health support in its health advisory on chatbots and wellness apps.

4. Preserve details and report the response if it is safe
Once immediate safety is addressed, note the chatbot service, date, and relevant details of the harmful response. If it is safe and lawful, retain the relevant conversation so the provider can identify what happened. Then use the service’s feedback or reporting controls and check its current family-safety settings. Reporting does not guarantee a particular response or outcome.
Do not assume that parental controls let you read a teen’s conversations. OpenAI says its ChatGPT parental controls do not allow caregivers to read or monitor teen conversations (ChatGPT parental controls). Meta says its AI directs teens who suggest possible self-harm or suicide toward crisis helplines and encourages them to reach out to a parent or another trusted adult; it also announced alerts for parents using Instagram supervision tools (Meta’s announcement about teen distress conversations). These are provider descriptions, not guarantees that every harmful response will be caught. Features and controls differ by service and can change.

5. Decide what support is needed next
The next step depends on urgency, the kind of help needed, and where you live:
- Immediate danger: Contact emergency services. In the United States, the 988 Lifeline says to call 911 for immediate harm or danger.
- Urgent emotional crisis in the United States, without immediate physical danger: Call or text 988, or use its chat service.
- Serious or ongoing mental-health concerns: Contact a licensed mental-health professional, family doctor, or pediatrician.
- Outside the United States: Use local emergency and crisis services; check availability in your country or region rather than assuming U.S. numbers apply.
Keep the conversation open after the first response. Ask your teen whether anything else has happened and whether they want help talking with another trusted adult or clinician. The goal is to make sure a real person who can support them is involved, not to settle the issue through the chatbot.
