If a government service rejects your Aadhaar authentication, first record the exact message or error code, then verify the Aadhaar number and details you entered. Check whether your Aadhaar or biometrics are locked, and retry the permitted method carefully. Fingerprint failures often improve with correct finger placement, suitable pressure, a clean finger and scanner, or another enrolled finger.
If the same biometric problem continues over time, ask an Aadhaar update centre about updating your biometrics. When the failure is caused by the portal, network, policy or a limitation that you cannot fix, contact the requesting department or scheme operator with the error details and ask which exception-handling or alternate identity process it currently accepts.
Follow this order before trying repeatedly
- Capture the failure reason. Write down the displayed wording, error code, date and time. Take a screenshot if the service allows it without exposing information unnecessarily.
- Recheck the data. Confirm every digit of the Aadhaar number, the name or demographic details requested by the service, and the mobile number receiving an OTP. Correct any entry before submitting again.
- Check lock status. An Aadhaar lock and a biometric lock have different effects. Resolve the relevant lock through UIDAI’s official controls if it is the reason shown.
- Retry the appropriate modality. For a fingerprint attempt, use the placement and cleaning steps below. For an OTP, request a fresh code and enter it within the service’s validity period.
- Escalate with evidence. If the request still fails, ask the government department or scheme operator what alternate or exception process applies to that specific service.
Do not keep sending identical requests without reading the response. Repeated attempts can waste time while leaving a data-entry, lock or service-side problem unchanged.
Read the error message and identify the failure category
The failure reason determines the next action. Common categories include a technical or network problem, a mismatch between submitted demographic information and Aadhaar records, a fingerprint or other biometric mismatch, an invalid OTP, an incorrect Aadhaar number, or a lock on the Aadhaar or biometrics. UIDAI technical guidance provides correction and retry examples for these situations.

Data-entry or demographic mismatch
Check the Aadhaar number digit by digit. If the service asks for a name, date of birth, address component or another demographic value, enter it exactly as the service expects. A mismatch does not by itself establish that Aadhaar is invalid; it means the submitted value did not match the record or the service’s validation rules. Correct the entry and submit again.
OTP validation failure
Use the newest OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar or the number specified by the service. Enter it carefully and request a new OTP if the earlier one expired or was superseded. If several fresh OTPs fail, record the message and stop repeating the same attempt; the requesting service may need to investigate its validation or connectivity problem.
Technical or network error
A timeout, unavailable authentication server, gateway error or similar message can be temporary. Check your connection, reopen the service session and retry once after a short interval. If the service continues to fail, provide the department with the exact code rather than describing it only as “Aadhaar not working.”

Check whether Aadhaar or biometrics are locked
UIDAI distinguishes between locking Aadhaar authentication and locking biometrics. A locked Aadhaar prevents authentication using the Aadhaar number, UID token or Virtual ID (VID) across biometric, demographic and OTP modalities. A biometric lock prevents fingerprint, iris or face authentication, while other permitted modalities may have different results depending on the service.
Use UIDAI’s official Lock/Unlock Aadhaar and Biometric Lock/Unlock services to view or change the relevant status. The biometric lock and unlock service requires access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, as described by UIDAI. Follow the current on-screen verification steps and keep the confirmation message or reference details.
If you discover an Aadhaar lock
Unlock it through an official UIDAI channel, then return to the government service and use the modality that service permits. If you cannot complete the unlock because the registered mobile number is unavailable, tell the requesting department that the authentication route is blocked and ask what documented exception process it offers while you resolve the mobile-registration issue.

If only biometrics are locked
Do not continue sending fingerprint, iris or face attempts until the biometric lock is removed. Unlock through the official UIDAI process, then retry the biometric method. If the service supports OTP or another method, ask whether you may use it instead; acceptance is controlled by the service, not guaranteed by the existence of an Aadhaar modality.

For a single fingerprint mismatch, UIDAI advises a careful physical retry rather than immediate escalation. Small changes in placement, pressure or cleanliness can affect the capture.
- Clean and dry the finger. Remove dirt, excess oil or moisture without irritating the skin.
- Clean the scanner surface if the operator permits it and the equipment is designed for routine cleaning.
- Place the enrolled finger flat and in the position indicated by the operator or scanner. Do not twist or slide it while the image is being captured.
- Use suitable, steady pressure. Pressing too lightly or excessively can produce a poor image.
- Try a different finger that was enrolled in Aadhaar, if the device or operator allows another attempt.
- Wait for the result and keep the resulting error code if it fails again.
Dry, worn, injured or changed skin can make a genuine fingerprint difficult to read. A single failed capture is therefore not proof of identity fraud or an invalid Aadhaar record.
When repeated biometric failures require an update
If fingerprints continue to fail over time, across more than one attempt or device, approach an Aadhaar update centre and ask about updating your biometrics. The centre can explain the current capture and identity requirements. Bring the documents and identification the centre requests, and retain the acknowledgement or update reference so you can check the result with the government service later.
An update is a remedy for a recurring biometric-capture problem; it is not a substitute for correcting an incorrect Aadhaar number, an OTP problem or a service-side outage. Diagnose those causes separately so you do not make an unnecessary trip.

UIDAI advises service providers to maintain alternate identity or exception-handling processes for technological and biometric limitations. The route is scheme-specific. Depending on the rules, a service might support another biometric modality, OTP or time-based one-time password (TOTP) where feasible and admissible, or a documentary or physical Aadhaar-letter QR verification in certain benefit-scheme situations.

These possibilities are not universal entitlements. One department may permit an alternate modality while another may require an in-person check, a manual review or a later retry. Ask the operator exactly which option is available for your application, location and deadline. Do not assume that a QR check, OTP or paper letter will be accepted merely because another scheme uses it.
What to include in your request
- Your name and the service or scheme application reference.
- The date and time of each failed attempt.
- The exact error text or code, including capitalization and punctuation where shown.
- The modality used: fingerprint, iris, face, OTP, demographic or another option.
- Whether you checked Aadhaar and biometric lock status and what result appeared.
- A screenshot or printout with unnecessary Aadhaar digits and OTPs masked.
- Your deadline and the practical consequence, such as a benefit, certificate or payment being held.
Ask the service to confirm the next step in writing or provide a ticket number. UIDAI’s regulations state: “In case of authentication failure the requesting entity should, in clear and precise language, inform the resident about the reasons of authentication failure.” A clear explanation and an appropriate referral are part of the service’s handling responsibility.

| What you see | Likely issue | First action | If it persists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incorrect Aadhaar, demographic mismatch or invalid details | Number or submitted information does not match the record or service validation | Re-enter the number and requested details exactly | Give the code to the concerned service and ask it to check the record-matching rule |
| OTP validation failure | Expired, superseded or incorrectly entered OTP, or a service-side validation problem | Request a fresh OTP and enter the latest one carefully | Report the exact message and application reference to the service |
| Fingerprint or other biometric mismatch | Poor capture, changed skin condition, device issue or biometric mismatch | Clean the finger and scanner, use correct placement and pressure, and try another enrolled finger | Ask an Aadhaar update centre about biometric updating; ask the service about an alternate modality |
| Authentication blocked across methods | Aadhaar authentication lock | Check status and unlock through UIDAI’s official route | Contact the service if registered-mobile access or another account issue prevents unlocking |
| Fingerprint, iris or face attempts blocked but other methods may work | Biometric lock | Check and unlock biometrics through UIDAI, using the registered mobile access required by that service | Retry the permitted method or request the department’s exception process |
| Timeout, gateway or unavailable-service message | Technical or network failure | Check connectivity, start a fresh session and retry once later | Submit the code, timestamp and screenshot to the operator |
Security and privacy precautions while troubleshooting
- Use only the government service’s official site or application and UIDAI’s official channels. Avoid links sent by unknown callers or messages.
- Never disclose an OTP, full Aadhaar number, VID, PIN or authentication credentials to a person claiming to “fix” the failure.
- Mask unnecessary Aadhaar digits and all OTPs in screenshots or email attachments.
- Do not install an unapproved fingerprint scanner, browser extension or remote-access application on the promise that it will authenticate directly with UIDAI. Consumer-owned hardware cannot be assumed to provide a valid government authentication path.
- Keep the service ticket, error code and submission receipt until the benefit or application is completed.
What a 2020 government answer does—and does not—tell you
A Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology answer to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1352, answered on 22 September 2020, grouped Aadhaar-related technical glitches into categories such as network, demographic, biometric and OTP problems. Those categories remain useful for troubleshooting, but the answer does not establish that a particular department currently accepts a particular fallback or that an outage exists today. Current availability must be confirmed with the service handling your application.
When to escalate urgently
Contact the requesting department promptly when a deadline, payment, admission, pension, subsidy or certificate depends on the authentication. Explain that you attempted the prescribed method, provide the error evidence and request an exception or manual review before the deadline. If the department sends you back to UIDAI, ask it to state what information or confirmation it needs from UIDAI; this avoids an unproductive loop between two help desks.
If UIDAI’s lock or update process itself fails, retain its transaction or error reference and report that reference through the official support channel. If the government service fails while UIDAI status and your data are correct, the service operator remains the party that must explain its matching, connectivity and exception rules.
Bottom line
Start with the displayed error, verify the Aadhaar number and requested details, check both lock types, and retry the matching method correctly. Clean and reposition a finger or try another enrolled finger for a biometric mismatch; seek a biometric update when failures recur. If the problem is technical, policy-based or not resolved by these steps, the requesting department must tell you which alternate or exception process applies to that specific service.
