Recover the Google Account linked to the channel first. A hijacked YouTube channel is an account-security problem: every channel is associated with at least one Google Account, and a compromised owner or manager account can control channel content and settings. Changing channel details before securing that account can leave the attacker in control. If you can still sign in, change the Google Account password and secure it immediately. If you are locked out, use Google’s official account-recovery process. After access is restored, remove unauthorized users and content, repair channel settings, handle any strikes correctly, and harden access for every owner and manager.
This guide follows YouTube’s current recovery guidance. Support and cleanup-tool details can change, so use the linked YouTube Help pages when a step depends on a current eligibility rule or interface.
How to recognize a likely hijack
Investigate promptly when you see changes that nobody on your team made. YouTube lists these warning signs:
Recommended Free Tools
- A profile picture, channel name, description, handle, or banner has changed unexpectedly.
- The Google Account email settings or the channel’s AdSense association are different.
- Messages were sent from the account that the owner did not write.
- Videos or live streams appear that no owner or manager uploaded.
- Unknown people or permissions appear in channel or Content Manager settings.
These signs warrant an account-security investigation; no single change proves who made it. Malware and deceptive phishing messages are possible causes. Do not give anyone your password or download software offered as a “recovery” tool. Start with YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery instructions and Google’s own sign-in screens.

Before changing anything, note the time you noticed the problem and save screenshots, unfamiliar video URLs, altered email notices, and permission entries. Keep a copy of legitimate branding, scheduled uploads, and monetization records if you have them. Documentation helps you explain what happened to YouTube and distinguish an attacker’s changes from routine work by a team member. Do not delay account recovery while trying to build a perfect incident file.
The recovery order that prevents further damage
- Secure or recover the associated Google Account. This is the controlling credential for the channel.
- Secure other owners’ and managers’ Google Accounts. One compromised team member can reintroduce unauthorized access.
- Restore the channel. Remove unknown users and uploads and reverse altered settings.
- Resolve strikes, claims, termination, and support requests. Use YouTube’s investigation or appeal route instead of taking an action that could make enforcement harder to reverse.
- Harden the account and team. Replace shared sign-ins with channel permissions and stronger verification.
Do not promise yourself or a client that recovery will succeed or that a particular response time is guaranteed. YouTube may not be able to identify every remaining session or attacker.
Step 1: Recover the Google Account
If you can still sign in
Open the Google Account security controls, change the password to a long, unique password that has never been used on that account, and review the account’s security activity. Remove unfamiliar recovery details, devices, sessions, and third-party access. Then continue to channel cleanup while you are still signed in.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChanging only the YouTube channel name or deleting one video is not enough. The attacker may retain a Google session, recovery address, app authorization, or manager account that can restore the hijack. Check recent security events for password changes, new sign-ins, recovery-address edits, and newly authorized applications. Revoke anything you cannot identify, and repeat the check after cleanup.
If the account controls other Google services, review those services too. An attacker who obtained the account may have accessed email, Drive files, payment settings, or saved browser credentials. Secure the account without clicking links in suspicious messages; type the official Google address or use a trusted bookmark.
If the password or email was changed
Use Google’s official account-recovery flow from a device, browser, and location you normally use. Answer the ownership questions as accurately as possible, including older passwords or approximate account details when requested. If Google restores access, immediately set a new password that has not previously been used on the account and review every security setting again.
Recovery is not guaranteed, and no legitimate helper can bypass Google’s ownership checks. Avoid people who request your password, one-time code, backup code, remote desktop access, or payment in exchange for “instant” recovery. Do not create a new Google Account and assume it will restore the original channel; the channel remains tied to its existing account and permissions.

Ask each person with channel access to check their own Google Account. A channel can remain vulnerable when the primary owner recovers but a manager’s account is still compromised. Each person should change their password, remove unknown sessions and applications, verify recovery phone and email options, and enable stronger sign-in protection before you add or retain their channel permission.

Use a private, trusted communication method to coordinate this work. Do not send passwords or verification codes in a team chat. If you cannot confirm that a person still controls their account, temporarily remove their channel access after the controlling account is secure and restore only the least privilege they need.
Step 2: Clean up the channel after account recovery
Only begin channel restoration after the controlling Google Account is secure. YouTube provides a Studio cleanup tool to eligible channel owners and managers when its systems detect unusual activity. The review notification appears only when YouTube has detected such activity; it is not a general-purpose audit button.
Use the Studio cleanup tool when it appears
- Sign in to the recovered Google Account and open YouTube Studio.
- Open the cleanup notification or the cleanup-tool entry shown in Studio.
- Review each detected change, including uploads, users, permissions, and channel details.
- Reject changes you recognize as legitimate and select the actions needed to reverse unauthorized changes.
- Submit the review and save the tracking link YouTube emails you.
- Use that tracking link if you need to edit the review before the date in the email. YouTube’s guidance says this is generally about 30 days after submission, but confirm the current notice because the timing can change.
The cleanup tool is limited to channel owners and managers. YouTube advises making requested changes within a few hours, so do not leave the review pending while the attacker may still be active. Read every proposed change: an attacker may alter a legitimate upload or permission alongside obvious spam, and accepting all suggested actions without checking can remove work your team intended to keep.
If the cleanup tool is unavailable: perform a manual audit
Record what you find before deleting or changing anything if you may need an enforcement review. Then inspect the following areas in YouTube Studio and the related Google Account controls.
| Area | What to check | Action for an unauthorized change |
|---|---|---|
| Users and permissions | Owners, managers, editors, viewers, invitations, and Content Manager users | Remove unknown people, cancel unaccepted invitations, and confirm that each remaining person still needs that role. |
| Channel identity | Name, handle, description, profile image, banner, links, and contact details | Restore the intended information and check that links do not lead to phishing pages. |
| Uploads and live content | Videos, Shorts, live streams, thumbnails, titles, descriptions, and schedules | Preserve evidence where appropriate, then follow the strike/claim decision below before deleting. |
| Visibility and comments | Public, private, and unlisted settings; comments and moderation filters | Restore intended privacy, remove abusive changes, and review pinned comments or links. |
| Playlists and subscriptions | New playlists, reordered items, subscriptions, and followed channels | Remove additions you did not make and restore important playlists from your records. |
| Monetization | AdSense association, payment-related settings, and monetization status | Undo unknown associations and check the related Google payments or AdSense account for unauthorized changes. |
| Content Manager | Assets, ownership, policies, users, and delegated access | Remove unrecognized users or policy changes and involve the relevant rights administrator. |
Also check the Google Account’s recent security events, signed-in devices, recovery options, and connected applications. A clean-looking channel does not prove that all account access has been removed. Review notification and forwarding settings in the account email as well, because a hidden forwarding rule can expose future recovery messages.
How to handle videos uploaded by the attacker
YouTube distinguishes between unauthorized uploads with no associated enforcement and uploads that have a strike or claim:
- No Community Guidelines or copyright strike or claim: YouTube says to delete the unauthorized video.
- Community Guidelines strike, copyright strike, or copyright claim: Contact YouTube to start an investigation. Do not assume deletion is the only or safest response.
Keep the distinction attached to each video. Deleting content with an enforcement record can remove information YouTube needs to investigate, while leaving a malicious public video online can expose viewers and the channel to additional harm. Capture the video URL, title, upload time, and enforcement notice before taking action when possible.
Step 3: Deal with termination, strikes, and support
If YouTube terminated the channel
Recover the associated Google Account before submitting an appeal. YouTube warns that an appeal may not be accepted when account recovery is incomplete. After access is restored, use the appeal information sent to the account’s inbox and describe the unauthorized activity accurately. Do not create a replacement channel to evade a termination while the appeal is pending.

Creator Support eligibility
Eligible creators can contact Creator Support after recovering the Google Account. If that team is unavailable to you, YouTube directs creators to @TeamYouTube on X. The current hacked-channel recovery guidance limits potential hacking incidents handled through this support route to the previous nine months because of data-retention limits. That is a support window, not a statement that an older incident is certainly unrecoverable; older cases may simply fall outside the assistance YouTube can provide.
Use only the contact paths shown in YouTube Help or inside your recovered Studio account. Paid “recovery” companies and unsolicited social-media accounts cannot grant Google ownership, and giving them credentials can create a second compromise. Keep copies of case numbers, submitted descriptions, and YouTube’s replies.
YouTube’s official recovery pages do not publish a prevalence rate or a recovery-success percentage. Treat any third-party percentage as a separate claim that needs its own evidence.
Step 4: Confirm what you can—and cannot—confirm
After cleanup, compare the channel with records such as scheduled-upload lists, brand assets, permission rosters, and monetization reports. Check the Google Account’s sessions and security events again after a short interval and ask every owner or manager to do the same.
There is no definitive “attacker removed” indicator for every case. YouTube states: “It’s not always possible for us to determine that the hijacker has been removed.” That uncertainty is why account recovery, permission review, session removal, and stronger authentication all matter. Continue monitoring alerts, uploads, live streams, billing notifications, and permission changes for several days rather than treating one clean audit as proof of safety.
Step 5: Harden the channel so the same path is harder to use
Use channel permissions instead of shared credentials
Give each person their own Google Account access through YouTube’s permissions system. Assign the least privilege needed for the job, remove people who have left, and review the list on a schedule. Never distribute one shared password among a production team. A separate email address used only for channel administration can reduce exposure from unrelated services.
Document who is responsible for ownership, publishing, moderation, monetization, and rights management. That roster makes it easier to spot an unexpected invitation and prevents teams from granting broad owner access simply because a temporary contractor needs to upload a video.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a stronger second factor
YouTube recommends 2-Step Verification with a passkey as its strongest protection against phishing. A passkey is stored on a compatible device or credential manager; it is not the same thing as buying a physical key. A FIDO security key is an optional physical 2-Step Verification method that also provides strong phishing protection, but purchasing one does not recover an already hijacked account.

| Method | Phishing resistance | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | YouTube describes passkeys as the strongest option against phishing. | Requires a compatible device or credential manager and a recovery plan for lost devices. |
| Physical security key | Strong phishing protection. | Requires carrying the key; keep a securely stored backup if your policy allows. |
| Google Prompt | Stronger than a password alone, but dependent on the protected phone. | Convenient for users who keep a signed-in phone available. |
| Authenticator app | Provides time-based codes without relying on text messages. | Requires backup planning when a phone is replaced or lost. |
| Phone code | More exposed to phishing and phone-number attacks than passkeys or security keys. | Useful as a fallback, not an ideal sole protection for a high-value channel. |
| Backup codes | They are emergency access codes, not a daily sign-in method. | Store them offline and never send them to another person. |
The availability and security characteristics above follow YouTube and Google guidance; your organization may require a particular method. Whichever method you use, add and test recovery phone and email options and store backup codes safely. The core recovery process is account-based and does not require buying a product; a security key is an optional prevention expense, not a recovery service.
Reduce malware and phishing exposure
Scan computers used for channel administration with current antivirus software, remove suspicious browser extensions, and keep operating systems and browsers updated. YouTube recommends Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome as an additional protection against deceptive sites. Treat unexpected sponsorship, copyright, verification, and strike messages as untrusted until you open YouTube or Google directly rather than following their links.
Do not install cracked editing tools, unofficial browser add-ons, or “verification” software from a message. Malware that steals browser sessions can bypass a recently changed password until the infected device and sessions are secured. Run scans on every computer and phone used by owners or managers, not just the device where the suspicious upload appeared.

What if my channel was terminated?
Recover the Google Account first, then appeal using the information YouTube sends to the account inbox. An appeal may not be accepted while recovery is incomplete.
How do I know if the hacker is gone?
You cannot always know with certainty. Review sessions, permissions, uploads, and settings repeatedly; YouTube says it cannot always determine whether the hijacker has been removed.
Will YouTube ask for my password by email or phone?
No. YouTube says it will never ask for your password, email address, or other account information in an email, message, or phone call.
Does recovering a hijacked channel cost money?
The recovery and cleanup process is account-based and does not require buying a product. Optional tools such as a physical security key can improve future protection, but they cannot restore an account that is already hijacked.
What is the difference between a passkey and a security key?
A passkey is stored on a compatible device or credential manager. A security key is a separate physical 2-Step Verification device. YouTube describes both as strongly resistant to phishing, but neither replaces Google’s recovery process.
What if the incident happened more than nine months ago?
YouTube’s current hacked-channel support guidance says it may be unable to recover potential hacking incidents outside the previous nine months because of data-retention limits. That does not establish that every older case is unrecoverable; use the official recovery flow and current Help instructions.
Can a manager’s account keep the hijack active after the owner changes the password?
Yes. Any compromised owner or manager account can reintroduce unauthorized access. Have every account holder secure their Google Account, remove unknown sessions and apps, and review permissions.
The Bottom Line
Account recovery comes first: secure the Google Account, then clean up the channel, address enforcement through YouTube, and replace shared access with individually assigned permissions and phishing-resistant 2-Step Verification.
