If a used PC suddenly shows a rental-company lock, do not pay a demand or enter a password into the screen immediately. Photograph the message, preserve your sales and payment records, and contact both the seller and the named company through independently verified channels. Ask each party for a written explanation and documents supporting its claim to the computer. In the United States, the outcome depends on the sale, any prior rental or financing contract, and the law of the state involved.
A rental-company lock is not automatically proof that the seller owned the computer, that you owe the company money, or that the screen is Microsoft’s Find My Device feature. Treat the lock as evidence of a disputed device-management claim until the parties establish what happened.
What a rental-company lock can mean
Some rent-to-own and rental businesses have used software that can disable a computer remotely. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) described this capability in a 2012 enforcement action, saying software licensed to rental stores had a “kill switch” that could disable a computer reported stolen or associated with late payments. The FTC’s complaint against J.A.G. Rents alleged that PC Rental Agent could disable a rented computer when it was reported lost or stolen, when a customer was late, stopped communicating, or otherwise violated a rental contract. Those were allegations about named respondents and their software, not a finding about every rental company or proof about your particular PC. Read the FTC’s 2012 account.
Recommended Free Tools
The same complaint alleged undisclosed monitoring features, including keystroke logging, screenshots, webcam photographs, and fake registration prompts that collected contact information. In 2013, the FTC approved final orders involving the named companies and software provider. Those orders restricted monitoring and undisclosed location tracking and barred deceptive information-collection methods. They do not establish that a current lock is lawful or unlawful, and they do not determine who owns a used computer. See the FTC’s final-order announcement.

Clues that the lock is tied to rental or asset-management software
- The screen names a rental, lease-to-own, or equipment-finance company and displays a case number or account reference.
- It asks for a payment, a return of the computer, or contact with a particular store before Windows can be used.
- The message appears before the normal Windows sign-in screen or remains after a restart.
- The serial number or asset tag is shown, suggesting the message is linked to a device record rather than only to a Windows account.
These clues identify the type of claim being made, not its validity. A seller could have sold a device without clearing a prior account, a company could have an outdated record, or the message could be fraudulent.
Why this is different from Microsoft Find My Device
Microsoft documents Find My Device as a feature for locating and remotely locking the owner’s own Windows 10 or Windows 11 device. It must have been enabled beforehand, and the owner signs in with a personal Microsoft account while using an administrator account. Microsoft’s instructions do not describe a way to remove a third-party rental-company lock. Compare the screen with the documented workflow at Microsoft Find and lock a lost Windows device. If the message identifies a rental company, use that company’s verified dispute process rather than assuming Microsoft support can clear it.

- Capture the lock. Photograph or screenshot the entire message, including the company name, phone number, web address, payment demand, error text, case number, and any displayed serial or asset number. Record when and where the lock appeared. Do not rely on files stored only on the locked PC.
- Assemble the transaction record. Save the listing, invoice or receipt, payment confirmation, seller profile, messages, shipping and delivery records, serial number, and any bill of sale or transfer paperwork. Export conversations if the marketplace allows it, and keep copies in cloud storage or on another drive.
- Do not enter credentials into the prompt. Avoid Microsoft, email, banking, payment, or other passwords on an unverified lock screen. Do not call only the number shown in the message or click only its link. Historical FTC records describe fake registration prompts used on some rented PCs to collect personal information; that history warrants caution, but does not prove that every current prompt is malicious. Review the FTC complaint.
- Check the hardware identity. Compare the serial number in the lock message, BIOS or firmware screen, chassis label, original listing, and receipt. A mismatch may indicate a mistaken record or a substituted machine. Photograph the labels without removing security seals or opening the case.
- Keep the computer in its current state. Do not wipe the drive, reinstall Windows, replace the storage device, or attempt a bypass while the ownership dispute is unresolved. Such actions can destroy evidence and may violate a contract or interfere with an investigation. If you need files for work or safety, ask a qualified professional about a documented, non-destructive method and keep a record of what was done.
- Write a timeline. Note when you bought the PC, when it was delivered, when you first used it, when payments were made, and when the lock appeared. Include every contact attempt and response. A dated timeline helps distinguish a seller’s misrepresentation from a later account event.
Ask the seller to prove the right to sell the PC
Contact the seller in writing through the marketplace, email address, or other channel used for the sale. Keep the tone factual. Ask for information that can establish the ownership chain:
- Where and when did the seller acquire the computer?
- Was it ever rented, leased, financed, or supplied under a rent-to-own plan?
- Was the original account paid in full, and is there a release, payoff letter, or transfer document?
- What is the exact serial number and asset tag associated with the sale?
- Was any management software or account supposed to be removed before transfer?
Give the seller a copy of your receipt and the lock photograph, but redact unrelated personal information. Request a written refund or a documented cure if the seller cannot establish that the computer was free to transfer. Follow the marketplace’s dispute deadline as well as any payment-provider process; do not let a conversation with the seller cause those deadlines to expire.
A used sale does not automatically erase a prior rental or financing claim. Whether a buyer obtained good title, whether a company can demand return, and whether a seller breached a warranty are questions that require the contracts, payment history, transaction facts, and applicable state law. Do not state as a certainty that the seller committed fraud or that the company has no rights until those facts are reviewed.

Contact the named rental company safely
Find the company’s official website, published customer-service number, or registered mailing address independently. Use contact details from a verified business record or prior contract, not solely the locked screen. Ask for a case or reference number for every conversation and follow up by email or letter so there is a written record.

- Does the company’s records contain this serial number or asset tag?
- What event caused the lock, and on what date was it applied?
- What contract, account, or report gives the company a claim to this specific device?
- Is the claimed balance a rental payment, purchase option, damage charge, or another amount?
- What document would show that the account was paid off or that the device was released for resale?
- What process is available to review proof of purchase and remove the lock if the sale was authorized?
- Will the company preserve the device record while the ownership dispute is investigated?
Provide the serial number and proof of purchase through a verified channel, but do not send passwords, full banking credentials, or identity documents unless you have confirmed why they are required and how they will be protected. Do not agree to pay another person’s rental balance merely to make the screen disappear. First obtain the company’s written basis, check the sales and rental documents, and consider advice from a consumer-law professional in your state.
Understand the contract and payment history
The FTC explains that rent-to-own and lease-to-own arrangements are governed by contracts and that missing a payment can result in losing the item and money already paid. Its guidance recommends keeping the contract and payment records. Read any document you have for terms about title, late payments, repossession, default notices, assignment of accounts, and the conditions for transferring or selling the equipment. Read the FTC’s rent-to-own and lease-to-own guidance.

A later buyer may have different rights from the original renter. For example, a seller might have had permission to resell a paid-off unit but failed to clear the management record, or might have sold a unit while a contractual claim remained. The lock itself cannot answer those questions. Gather the original listing, the seller’s representations, payment evidence, and any company correspondence before relying on a legal conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the right escalation route
Direct contact is often the fastest way to learn why a device is locked, while a government complaint creates an independent record. These routes have different purposes and are not guarantees of a particular result.
| Route | Best use | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seller or marketplace dispute | Request a refund, replacement, or proof of title from the party that sold the PC | Uses the sales record and may fit a payment or marketplace deadline | The seller may be unreachable or deny knowledge of the prior rental |
| Named rental company | Confirm the serial-number record and ask for release or an ownership review | The company can explain its own lock and identify the relevant account | It may insist on contract terms or require documents you do not possess |
| State consumer-protection office or attorney general | Report deceptive sales, unfair practices, or an unresolved business complaint | Independent intake and possible referral to the business | It is not a substitute for individualized legal advice and may not obtain a specific remedy |
| Consumer-law attorney | Analyze title, contract rights, demand letters, damages, or litigation options | Advice can be tailored to your state and documents | Fees and availability vary; no particular paid provider is required by the facts |
| Law enforcement | Report evidence of theft, identity fraud, or an intentionally deceptive transaction | Appropriate when facts suggest a crime rather than only a contract dispute | Police generally do not decide private title disputes on the spot |

For a bad rent-to-own business experience or suspected scam, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the company name, the lock message, purchase records, dates, and copies of communications. The FTC complaint process does not guarantee that your computer will be unlocked or that you will receive money, but reports help authorities identify patterns.
If you already entered a password or personal information
Use another trusted device and secure the accounts whose information you entered. Change the password anywhere it was reused, starting with your email account because email can be used to reset other accounts. Then review sign-in activity, revoke unfamiliar sessions, enable multifactor authentication where available, and contact your bank or payment provider if financial information was submitted. Preserve the suspicious prompt and messages before deleting them, because they may be useful to the seller, company, marketplace, or authorities.
What not to do
- Do not pay an unverified caller, text message, cryptocurrency address, or gift-card demand.
- Do not install a remote-support tool at the instruction of an unverified lock screen.
- Do not provide a one-time code, password, recovery key, or complete identity document merely to “unlock” the PC.
- Do not attempt to defeat the management software, alter firmware, crack an account, or access the rental company’s systems.
- Do not publicly post unredacted receipts, addresses, serial numbers, or identity documents.
- Do not assume that a factory reset proves ownership or removes a hardware- or account-linked restriction.
A bypass can erase evidence, damage the computer, expose you to malware, or create a separate legal dispute. The safer objective is a documented release, refund, or formal resolution based on the transaction and contract.

Use Microsoft’s support and account-recovery routes when the problem is a Microsoft account, Windows activation, or a Find My Device lock on a device that was configured by the signed-in owner. The documented Find My Device feature requires prior setup, a personal Microsoft account, and administrator access. A screen naming a rental company falls outside that published workflow, so contact the seller and the named company first and preserve their responses. Microsoft’s instructions are available at Find and lock a lost Windows device.
A practical decision checklist
- Photograph the lock and copy every transaction record to a separate device.
- Verify the serial number and the rental company’s identity independently.
- Ask the seller in writing for the ownership chain, payoff status, and a refund or cure if needed.
- Ask the rental company in writing for the account basis, dates, contract clause, and release procedure.
- Keep all contracts, payment records, messages, and responses together in a dated folder.
- Escalate to your state consumer-protection office, attorney general, or the FTC when direct contact fails; seek a consumer-law attorney for advice specific to your state and documents.
- Secure any accounts whose credentials or personal data were entered on the locked PC.
The central question is not whether a rental company can display a lock; historical FTC cases show that remote disablement has existed. The decisive questions are who had the right to sell this particular computer, what contract or account the company relies on, and what remedies your state provides for the documented transaction.
