Stop at the closure, read every instruction, and do not cross the barrier. Check the responsible land manager’s current notice or ask staff whether an official diversion or another open area is available. If no safe, permitted route is clearly identified, turn back to an open place and change your plan.
Closures can protect visitors from unstable ground, flooding, repairs, wildlife activity, erosion, events or damage to fragile archaeology. A nearby path, an old map line or other visitors’ behavior does not override a sign, fence or staff direction. The land manager’s live instructions control access.
The closure sign is the authority on the ground
Treat a locked gate, tape, fence, warning board, digital notice at an entrance or direct instruction from a ranger as a real access restriction, not a suggestion. National Trails guidance for England and Wales says trail conditions can change because of erosion, repairs, land management, local events, seasonal safety concerns or wildlife protection, and tells visitors to follow local signs. Read the entire notice before deciding what to do.
Natural England and Natural Resources Wales state: “You should always follow local signs on the trail.” Their National Trails preparation guidance, published 24 June 2026, applies to National Trails in England and Wales. Natural Resources Wales gives the same practical direction: “You should always follow any instructions given by signs or local staff including any trail diversion signs.” See its visitor-safety guidance.

A closure may affect a short segment rather than the entire destination. Do not infer the scope from the first sentence you read: identify the stated start and end points, the reason, the date or duration if provided, and any route marked as an official diversion.
What to record from the notice
- Which path, access point, building, excavation or viewpoint is closed.
- Whether the restriction is temporary, seasonal, weather-related or indefinite.
- Why the closure exists and what hazard or conservation concern it addresses.
- Any named diversion, reopening condition, permitted viewing area or alternative entrance.
- Which agency, park, landowner or site operator issued the instruction.
Confirm what remains open before moving
Once you have stopped, verify the current status through the responsible agency’s site page, closure map or staff. Natural Resources Wales warns that mobile signal may be unreliable and recommends checking the destination page before setting out. Download the relevant notice or map while you have a connection, and carry offline directions rather than relying on a live webpage at the barrier.
For a National Trail in England or Wales, use the official trail map and diversion or closure updates on the National Trails preparation page. If the sign appears misleading or does not match the online information, the same service provides a way to report trail problems. Reporting a discrepancy is useful, but it does not authorize you to continue past the closure.
Questions to ask a ranger or site manager
- Is the whole route closed, or only the section beyond this point?
- Where does the official diversion begin, and where does it rejoin the route?
- Is the diversion suitable for the same users, such as walkers, wheelchair users or families?
- Can another entrance, exhibit, viewpoint or trail be visited legally today?
- Are there weather, tide, river-level or daylight limits that affect the alternative?
- When and where will the next status update be posted?
If nobody is present and the current notice is unclear, remain on the open side while you seek confirmation. Ask at a visitor centre, contact the land manager using the number on the sign, or consult the official destination page. Do not treat a social-media comment, an old guidebook or a passing hiker’s assurance as current authorization.

Use an official diversion—or turn back
An official diversion is a route deliberately selected and signed by the land manager. Follow its signs in order, verify that you are still on the marked route at junctions, and allow for a different distance, surface or elevation. If the diversion exits the property or uses a road, follow the additional instructions about gates, crossings and permitted access.
A nearby footpath shown on a map is not automatically an acceptable substitute. It may cross private land, be closed for a different reason, be unsafe in current conditions or fail to reconnect with the destination. Likewise, an old map line does not defeat a present-day closure. Use an alternative only when the land manager identifies it as open and lawful, or when you have independently confirmed its current status with the responsible authority.
| What you find | Appropriate response | What not to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clear signs point to a named diversion | Follow the marked diversion and monitor signs at every junction. | Cut across the closed segment to save time. |
| The notice closes one section but lists an open entrance or area | Confirm directions and visit only the stated open area. | Assume the rest of the site is open without checking boundaries. |
| A barrier is present but no alternative is described | Ask staff or consult the current agency notice; if unresolved, turn back. | Climb over, go around or follow an unmarked track. |
| Other visitors are entering | Continue to follow the official restriction and seek clarification. | Use other people’s behavior as permission. |
| Weather or a hazard is worsening | Move toward a safe open area, using the safest known route. | Press on because the destination is close. |
When the diversion is not practical
A signed alternative may be longer, steeper, rougher or unsuitable for your group. Ask the manager whether another open route exists; do not modify the diversion by entering closed ground. If the only approved route cannot be completed safely with your time, equipment or mobility needs, return to the last safe point and choose a different activity or postpone the visit.
National Trails guidance specifically advises visitors to be prepared to turn back as conditions change. Turning around is the correct outcome when no route is both safe and permitted.

Archaeological sites require stricter boundaries
Archaeological places can be damaged by a single step, touch or removed object. Stay outside fences, ropes and marked excavation areas, even when the feature looks unattended. The Archaeological Institute of America’s tourist guidance says to follow rules set by site managers and tour operators, not enter excavation areas and leave objects where they are. Its guidance is available in Tourists: Visiting an archaeological site can be.
Do not move pottery, stone, metal, bone, soil, plants or other material to improve a photograph or take home as a souvenir. Do not probe the ground, climb walls or handle structures unless the site explicitly permits it. A closure may be intended to protect the evidence itself, not merely to keep visitors away from a hazard.
Can you visit another part of the site?
Possibly, but only within the area the manager identifies as open. Ask whether the open section has a separate entrance, viewing platform, museum, marked path or guided access. Confirm where the closed boundary begins and ends; archaeological sites can contain less visible exclusion zones around an excavation or unstable structure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGrand Canyon National Park illustrates why access categories must not be generalized. Its Archaeological Site Etiquette Policy for 2025–2026 classifies sites under that park’s own management system and states that Class IV archaeological sites are closed to visitation. Those class labels apply to Grand Canyon National Park and its relevant operators, not to archaeological sites elsewhere. At another destination, use that site’s own signs, map and staff instructions.

Handle hazards and emergencies correctly
If the closure is associated with falling rock, floodwater, fire, unstable structures, wildlife, extreme heat or another active hazard, increase your distance from the boundary and follow the safest route back. Do not wait beside a barrier in a narrow ravine, on an exposed slope or near rising water while deciding what to do.
If someone is injured, lost, trapped, cut off by water or in immediate danger, call the local emergency number. In England and Wales, National Trails guidance directs visitors to call 999 and request the appropriate service, such as coastguard, police, mountain rescue or lowland search and rescue. Emergency numbers and rescue arrangements differ by country, so use the number for the country where you are.
Information rescuers need
- Your exact location, using a trail name, grid reference, coordinates or a nearby sign.
- The nature of the emergency and the number of people affected.
- Injuries, medical conditions, clothing and equipment.
- Weather, visibility, water levels and any hazards around you.
- A phone number that can receive a callback and whether the battery is low.
For a non-emergency problem—such as a missing sign, damaged gate or confusing diversion—use the land manager’s reporting channel after you are safely away from the hazard. Do not enter a closed area to investigate or photograph the problem.

Closure decisions are easier when you have offline information and a flexible plan. The National Trails guidance recommends carrying a map, guidebook or directions because internet access may be unavailable on the trail. A destination-specific paper map is useful for orientation and for locating confirmed alternatives, but it never grants permission to cross a closure.

- Check the official destination page on the day of travel. Look for closure notices, diversion maps, weather warnings and access restrictions.
- Save the information offline. Download the map or print the notice, including contact details for the land manager.
- Mark a return point and backup activity. Choose an open viewpoint, museum, trail segment or nearby destination that can replace the closed objective.
- Tell your group the rule. Everyone should know that barriers and staff directions are mandatory, including when the detour is inconvenient.
- Carry basic navigation and safety equipment. Bring the appropriate map, charged phone, power reserve, water, weather-appropriate clothing and any mobility aids required for the approved route.
- Recheck at the entrance. A route that was open when planned may close before you arrive.
How to judge an offline map
Use the map to understand where you are, not to overrule a current notice. Check its publication date, scale, access symbols and whether it marks temporary diversions. Keep the official closure page or printed notice with it so that permanent map information and temporary instructions are read together.
A quick decision process at the barrier
Use this sequence when you need to make a decision quickly:
- Stop. Stay on the open side of the barrier and keep the group together.
- Read. Identify the closure limits, reason, date and any diversion.
- Verify. Check the responsible agency’s current page or ask authorized staff.
- Choose. Take only a confirmed, permitted alternative.
- Turn back. If the route is unclear, unsafe, unsuitable or unapproved, return to an open area.
- Escalate. Contact emergency services for immediate danger; report ordinary access problems later through the official channel.
This process also answers common questions such as “Is there a detour if this trail is closed?” and “Where can I check whether the site is open?” The answer is destination-specific: look for the land manager’s current notice, closure map or staff at the site. No universal map, app or visitor custom can replace that authority.
Quick Recap
What a responsible visit looks like
- You stop before the barrier rather than searching for a way around it.
- You use current information from the agency that manages the trail or site.
- You follow a signed diversion exactly, including its access and safety instructions.
- You keep out of excavation areas and leave archaeological material undisturbed.
- You turn back when no safe, legal route is available.
- You call the local emergency number when a person faces immediate danger.
- You report misleading signs or damaged infrastructure only after reaching safety.
