If your smart ring hurts, pinches, causes numbness, or is hard to remove, take it off if you can do so safely and address the fit before troubleshooting its data. If readings are missing or inconsistent, check the exact model’s fit and sensor placement, clean the sensors, then check battery, connection, and software. A single unexpected reading is not a diagnosis.
What to do first if the ring is uncomfortable
A smart ring should stay in place without feeling tight or restrictive. Do not keep wearing it through pain, numbness, pinching, or signs that circulation is restricted. Oura says a good fit is snug but comfortable, without constant pressure, pain, or numbness; persistent pinching or marks that do not fade shortly after removal are reasons to try another finger or adjust the size (Oura product safety guidance). RingConn likewise says its sizing ring should not be painful, restrict circulation, or be difficult to remove (RingConn sizing guide).
- Remove the ring if you can do so safely; do not force a stuck ring.
- Try another supported finger or hand only if the ring then sits securely and comfortably.
- If it is stuck, or you have significant swelling, pain, numbness, or circulation concerns, seek appropriate medical assistance and contact the ring maker for model-specific help. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal removal procedure for every ring or situation.
How to check whether the size is right
Smart-ring sizing is model- and generation-specific. An ordinary jewelry size—or the size used for another smart ring—may not match. Use the sizing kit for the exact model and generation: Oura says sizing differs by generation (Oura size guide), and RingConn notes that its sizes differ from standard ring sizes (RingConn sizing guide).
- Try the sizer on more than one appropriate finger and, if useful, both hands.
- Wear the exact-model sizing ring through normal activity and sleep for at least 24 hours, as both Oura and RingConn recommend.
- Check that it stays in place without rotating freely or leaving a gap, yet can be removed comfortably.
- If the actual ring fits differently from the sizer or remains uncomfortable, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming another size will solve it.
Finger size can change with time of day, activity, temperature, hydration, meals, and sleep, according to RingConn’s sizing guidance. Consider how the fit feels across ordinary day and night conditions, not just at one moment.

How to troubleshoot missing or inconsistent readings
Check contact, orientation, and cleanliness
A loose fit or dirty sensors can contribute to gaps in heart-rate data, according to Oura’s troubleshooting guidance. Confirm that the ring is snug and follow the orientation instructions for your specific model. For Oura Ring 4, Oura says to align the sensors against the palm side of the finger; its heart-rate guidance also says the LED sensors should be beneath the finger for overnight data. Oura recommends washing the ring with soap and water and drying it thoroughly with a soft cloth if sensors are dirty (Oura fit and safety guidance; Oura heart-rate troubleshooting).
Oura also lists cold fingers, movement, and a sleeping position that restricts circulation as possible reasons for gaps. These are Oura-specific instructions and examples; use another brand’s own orientation and troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the same sensor position or thresholds apply.

Check charge, phone connection, and updates
For missing Oura blood-oxygen data, Oura advises checking that the ring fits snugly, its sensors face the underside of the finger, and it has at least 30% charge before bed. It also recommends making sure the app and firmware are current, Airplane Mode is off, and Bluetooth is enabled for syncing (Oura blood-oxygen troubleshooting). Do not apply Oura’s 30% threshold or settings to another brand unless that maker specifies them.

Check the manufacturer’s current known-issues page: a software problem can affect the app even when the ring itself is functioning. Oura’s known-issues page, consulted with issue status dated October 1, 2026, lists current issues and workarounds; its contents can change (Oura known issues).

Use the maker’s reset and support steps
Oura’s heart-rate troubleshooting recommends checking fit and sensors, then performing a soft reset if needed. It suggests wearing the ring for 24 hours afterward to see whether daytime heart-rate data collects and syncs; if it does not, contact Oura Support (Oura heart-rate troubleshooting). That 24-hour check is Oura’s workflow, not a universal guarantee or required step for every smart ring. Follow the reset instructions for your own model.
How to interpret readings that vary
A single unexpected value does not show by itself that a ring is defective or that a health condition is present. Oura says overnight SpO2 can be influenced by fit, orientation, movement, sleep position, environmental and physiological factors, and hardware or algorithm changes. It also says small night-to-night differences are expected, so review trends and the maker’s explanation for the specific metric rather than treating one reading as decisive (Oura SpO2 guidance).

Its guidance says the ring is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent medical conditions or illnesses (Oura SpO2 guidance).
