If your Samsung phone has finished flashing but remains on “Downloading…Do not turn off target” or Odin Mode, hold Volume Down and Power/Side together for about seven seconds, until it restarts. If it immediately returns to Download Mode, remove the case and check for a stuck button. For a failed update, use Samsung Smart Switch’s Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization when the phone is recognized; otherwise, arrange Samsung service rather than repeatedly attempting an unverified flash.
First, determine whether the flash is still running
Download Mode is Samsung’s service and software-installation environment. The screen commonly says “Downloading…Do not turn off target,” and Samsung also refers to it as Odin Mode. Seeing this screen does not automatically prove that a firmware write is still in progress. A phone can enter the mode accidentally, or remain there after a flash has completed or failed.
Do not force-restart the phone solely because the screen contains the warning. If a technician or flashing program is actively writing firmware and the progress is advancing, interrupting the process can make the software state worse. First check whether the computer is still performing the flash, whether a progress indicator is moving, and whether the flashing tool reports completion or an error.

The restart procedure below is for a phone that has finished flashing, reported failure, or has stopped with no active progress. If the screen is actually Android Recovery, a Samsung boot logo, or another error screen, use the instructions for that screen instead; the Download Mode key combination is not universal for every Galaxy model.

Force-restart a completed or failed flash
Samsung’s general support guidance in the United States, Australia and Korea uses the same basic action. The Australian instructions specify seven seconds, while the Korean instructions say at least seven seconds.
- Disconnect the phone from the flashing computer and any other USB device.
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power (called the Side button on many newer Galaxy phones) at the same time.
- Keep holding both buttons for approximately seven seconds, even if the screen does not change immediately.
- Release the buttons when the phone vibrates, the display goes dark, or the Samsung logo appears, then allow it to boot normally.
Button layouts differ by model and region. If your Galaxy uses a different physical arrangement, consult the manual for that exact model instead of substituting another key combination. This restart only exits Download Mode; it does not reinstall firmware or repair a damaged software installation.
If the phone goes straight back to Download Mode
Remove anything pressing a key
Take off the case before trying the restart again. Samsung specifically identifies contact with a button, including pressure from a poorly fitted case, as a reason a phone can return to Download Mode. Check that Volume Down and the Power/Side button move normally and are not wedged, sticky or continuously depressed.

Test once, then stop if a button appears faulty
After removing the case, perform one more seven-second restart. If the phone still enters Download Mode and a button feels damaged or does not spring back, arrange service. Repeating forced restarts cannot correct a mechanically stuck switch and can make it harder to determine whether the original flash succeeded.

Do not remove a sealed battery
Some older phones had user-removable batteries, but most current Galaxy models do not. Samsung’s general recovery material includes battery-removal steps for models designed for that procedure; do not pry open a sealed phone or disconnect its battery unless Samsung’s model-specific documentation explicitly permits it.
Use Smart Switch when an update failed
Samsung Smart Switch provides an Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization workflow for supported emergency-recovery cases. It is the appropriate official computer route when an update did not complete and Smart Switch can identify the device. It is not a guarantee for every phone that was manually flashed with third-party or model-mismatched firmware.
Open the emergency recovery workflow
- Disconnect the Galaxy from the computer.
- Close and restart Smart Switch on the computer.
- Reconnect the phone with a USB data cable that fits the Galaxy’s connector.
- In Smart Switch, open MORE, then choose Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.
- Select the device listed for recovery and follow the on-screen instructions.
Samsung’s Korean support instructions describe this path for a phone that remains on “Downloading” for a long time or reports that an upgrade did not complete. The exact screens can vary by Smart Switch release and device, so use the device that Smart Switch actually lists rather than selecting a different model.

If Smart Switch cannot see the phone
- Retry the recovery or update once after reconnecting the cable.
- Use a different USB port on the computer; a direct port is preferable to an unpowered hub.
- Reinstall the Smart Switch device driver when Smart Switch offers that option or reports a driver problem.
- Try a known-good USB data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry the connection Smart Switch needs.
If recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, Samsung documents using the emergency recovery code on another computer. Record the code exactly as shown, move to the second computer, install or open Smart Switch there, and use the emergency-recovery option with that code when prompted.
Smart Switch recovery can change or erase software on the phone. Samsung’s guidance does not promise that personal data will be preserved in every failure state, so do not assume that emergency initialization is a data-safe operation.
Choose the next step based on what the phone does

Do not start another random firmware flash
Download Mode makes firmware installation possible, but it does not make every firmware package safe or interchangeable. Samsung warns that installing unsupported software through Download Mode can damage the device, may affect warranty coverage, or leave it susceptible to hacking.

Do not choose another Odin package merely because its file name resembles yours. A responsible manual reflash requires the exact Galaxy model, region or carrier variant, bootloader/binary compatibility and a firmware package from an authoritative source. Those details are not available from a Download Mode screen alone. The general Samsung instructions support the restart and Smart Switch recovery paths; they do not establish a universal manual-reflash recipe.

If the phone boots, check whether it reaches Android normally, shows the expected model and software version, and can connect to essential functions before attempting any further change. If it cannot boot or immediately returns to Download Mode, stop experimenting and move to official recovery or service.

Escalate to Samsung service when the phone repeatedly returns to Download Mode after the button restart, when a physical button may be faulty, or when Smart Switch emergency recovery fails. Samsung’s US and Korean support guidance both recommend service inspection for a persistent Downloading screen.

Give the technician as much precise information as possible:
- The complete model number, including regional or carrier suffix.
- The country or carrier version of the phone.
- What you attempted to flash and whether the process reported completion, failure or an error code.
- Whether the phone was connected to a computer when it entered Download Mode.
- Whether removing the case changed the behavior.
- Every message shown by the flashing program or Smart Switch.
Do not claim that a particular recovery sequence will preserve data. The outcome depends on the model, firmware state and whether the storage can still be initialized. If the phone contains irreplaceable data, tell the service representative before authorizing an initialization or board-level repair.

Practical checklist
- Confirm that the display really says Downloading or Odin Mode, not Android Recovery.
- Do not interrupt a genuinely active firmware write.
- When flashing has finished or failed, hold Volume Down and Power/Side for about seven seconds.
- Remove the case and check that no button is held down.
- For a failed Samsung update, try Smart Switch’s MORE → Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.
- If the computer cannot detect the phone, retry the cable connection, use another USB port, reinstall the Smart Switch driver, or use the documented recovery code on another computer.
- Do not install an unverified package simply to escape Download Mode.
- Use Samsung service when the phone loops back to Download Mode or official recovery does not resolve it.
Bottom line
For a Samsung phone that is no longer actively flashing, the safe first move is a seven-second Volume Down plus Power/Side restart. A return to Download Mode points you toward a pressed or faulty button, while a failed official update points toward Smart Switch emergency recovery. If those steps do not work, stop improvising firmware procedures and have Samsung assess the exact model and software state.
