If a RYOBI dual charger will not charge both packs, first identify the exact charger model and battery platform. On the RYOBI PCG005 18V ONE+ Dual-Port Simultaneous Charger, check the outlet and battery seating, allow a hot or cold pack to reach a normal temperature, and test each battery separately. The result of that one-at-a-time test tells you whether the battery or charger is the likely fault.
Do not apply the PCG005 LED meanings to another RYOBI dual charger without checking that charger’s manual. “Dual charger” is a general description, while charging sequences and indicator codes are model-specific.
1. Identify the charger before troubleshooting
Read the model number on the charger’s label. RYOBI support uses that number to provide the correct operator manual, parts information, warranty guidance and repair options. The model number is usually printed on the charger label.

The instructions below are specifically for the RYOBI PCG005 18V ONE+ Dual-Port Simultaneous Charger. RYOBI lists PCG005 as compatible with RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries and capable of charging two packs at the same time. A different charger may use different LEDs, battery platforms or fault procedures.

2. Start with the simple checks
Verify the outlet and plug
Plug another device into the same outlet to confirm that it is energized. Make sure the charger plug is fully inserted and that any power strip, extension cord or switch in the circuit is on. For a PCG005 that does not start charging or appears to stop early, the manual directs you to check that the charger is properly connected to an energized outlet.
Reseat both batteries
Remove each battery and inspect the charger slots and battery contacts for visible dirt, moisture or damage. Reinstall the packs firmly according to the charger manual. A pack that is not fully engaged may not be detected, even when the charger has power.
Confirm platform compatibility
Check that the packs are RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries when using PCG005. Do not force a battery that does not fit the platform, and do not assume that a battery from another RYOBI voltage family is compatible merely because it has a similar shape.
3. Check for a temperature delay
A battery that is unusually hot after use, or very cold after storage, may not begin charging immediately. On PCG005, a flashing red LED with the green LED off can indicate that temperature protection is delaying charging.

Move the battery to a dry location at ordinary indoor temperature and wait for it to cool or warm naturally. Do not put it in a freezer, oven, on a heater or in direct sun. The PCG005 manual says charging begins automatically when the pack reaches the appropriate temperature, so no bypass procedure is required.
4. Read the PCG005 LED indicators
The following meanings apply to PCG005 only. They are not a universal RYOBI code for every dual-port charger.

5. Test one battery at a time
Testing both packs together can hide which component is failing. Use the following isolation sequence:

- Insert one compatible battery into one charging port and observe its indicator.
- Allow enough time for a normal charge or for the LED to show a repeatable error. Record what happens rather than relying on a brief flash during insertion.
- Remove that pack and repeat the test with the second battery. If the charger has two ports, test each pack in the other port as well when the manual permits.
- If one pack charges while the other repeatedly produces an error, the problem follows the battery and that pack is the likely fault.
- If both packs fail in the same way, test a known-good compatible battery if one is available. A second battery that also reports an error makes the charger the more likely suspect.
The PCG005 manual specifically says to try another battery when the first will not charge. If the second battery charges, return the original pack for evaluation. If another pack also does not charge, the manual directs you to return the charger and battery pack or packs for service evaluation.

6. Interpret the isolation result
The error follows one battery
When one pack fails in either port while another compatible pack charges normally, stop treating the charger as the primary suspect. The affected battery may have an internal fault or may be outside the charger’s acceptable condition. Do not open it, short its terminals or attempt an improvised “jump-start.” Contact RYOBI about warranty coverage. For an out-of-warranty battery, RYOBI identifies Home Depot as the replacement route; verify the exact battery platform and current retailer terms before buying.
Both batteries work elsewhere but not on this charger
If compatible packs charge on another approved charger but neither works on PCG005, the charger is implicated. Repeat the outlet, seating and temperature checks once, then follow RYOBI’s service route rather than disassembling the unit.
The fault appears in only one port
A failure limited to one port can indicate a charger-side problem, but do not assume that conclusion from a single insertion. Test each battery in both ports and note whether the error follows the pack or stays with the port. If a known-good battery fails only in one port, seek charger service.
The LEDs show a repeating red-and-green error
For PCG005, flashing red and green together means an error. Remove and reinstall the pack once to repeat the test. If the same indication returns, try another compatible battery. A repeatable error with a second pack is a service signal for the charger; a repeatable error with only one pack implicates that battery.

7. What not to do
- Do not bypass the charger’s temperature or error protections.
- Do not connect battery terminals to another battery, power supply or homemade leads.
- Do not open the charger or battery to repair a suspected electrical fault.
- Do not continue charging a pack that is swollen, cracked, wet, unusually hot, leaking or producing a burning smell.
- Do not use LED meanings from an online post or another RYOBI model when your label identifies a different charger.
Disconnect the charger and move a visibly damaged battery away from combustible materials without handling it unnecessarily. Use RYOBI’s battery recycling or service guidance for disposal.
8. Use RYOBI’s support and warranty path
Once the basic checks and one-at-a-time test are complete, gather the charger model, battery model numbers, purchase information and the exact LED behavior. RYOBI’s support system provides model lookup, manuals, replacement parts, service-center information, warranty assistance and recycling information.
For a battery that is still under warranty, contact RYOBI customer service before purchasing a replacement. If the charger and packs were purchased together and the fault cannot be isolated, ask the service center to evaluate the complete set. The PCG005 operator manual states: “If the charger does not charge your battery pack(s) under normal circumstances, return both the battery pack(s) and charger to your nearest repair center for electrical check.”

- Model confirmed: You read the charger label and obtained the manual for that exact model.
- Power confirmed: The outlet is energized and the plug is seated.
- Compatibility confirmed: Each pack belongs to the charger’s supported battery platform.
- Seating confirmed: Each battery is fully inserted and contacts are visibly clean and dry.
- Temperature ruled out: A hot or cold pack has returned to normal indoor temperature.
- Isolation completed: Each battery was tested alone, preferably in both ports.
- Service decision made: The fault follows one pack, follows one port, or affects multiple compatible packs.
If the fault follows one battery, pursue battery warranty or replacement. If multiple compatible batteries fail on the same charger after normal checks, pursue charger service. If the model is not PCG005, stop at the model-identification step and use that charger’s own instructions.

10. Why both batteries may not charge simultaneously
“Dual-port” does not by itself guarantee identical behavior for every battery condition. A charger can delay an individual pack for temperature protection, show an error for a particular pack, or stop charging when a pack reaches its completed state. The PCG005 is specifically listed as a simultaneous two-battery charger, but that capability does not eliminate the need to identify which pack or port is producing the problem.
Testing packs separately also distinguishes a charging problem from a battery state problem. If one battery is full, its steady green indicator is normal rather than evidence that the second port is malfunctioning. If one pack is above 80 percent, PCG005’s fading green indication means it is ready for use, not that charging has failed.
11. When replacement is appropriate
Replace or seek evaluation for a battery only after the failure follows that battery through the isolation test. Choose a replacement that matches the exact RYOBI 18V ONE+ platform and confirm warranty status first. Replace or service the charger when more than one known-compatible battery produces the same error, or when a known-good pack fails in one charger port but works in another approved charger.
Do not buy a replacement merely because both packs did not start at the same moment. A temperature delay, loose seating or unpowered outlet can affect both simultaneously and is resolved without replacing either component.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a flashing red LED always mean the PCG005 is broken?
No. Red flashing with the green LED off can be a hot-or-cold battery delay. Red and green flashing together indicates an error and requires the reseat-and-isolate test.
Can I use these LED codes on any RYOBI dual charger?
No. The codes listed here are for the PCG005. Read the model number and use that charger’s manual for other models.
What should I do if two batteries both show an error?
After confirming the outlet, seating, compatibility and temperature, try a known-compatible battery. If another pack also errors, follow RYOBI’s repair or warranty route for the charger and packs.
