Act immediately and keep everything in writing. Save the order, listing, delivery promise, payment record and every message; then use the resale platform’s official support channel before the event. If a ticket is rejected at the gate, obtain the reason and incident details while you are still at the venue. The remedy—replacement, refund, or a payment dispute—depends on the platform’s guarantee, the event’s status, your country and how you paid.
Your first response: preserve evidence and open a case
Time matters because a platform may require notice before the event, and a card-dispute deadline can run from the statement date rather than the event date. Create one folder for the transaction and save:
- The order confirmation, order number, seller or listing details, seat, section, row and ticket type.
- The promised delivery method and deadline, including mobile transfer, download, electronic delivery or collection instructions.
- The payment statement, total price and a breakdown of fees shown at checkout.
- Emails, text messages, in-app chats, transfer notices, screenshots and any cancellation or error message.
- Venue correspondence, gate information and the names or reference numbers of staff who refused entry.
Take screenshots with the date and time visible where possible. Do not delete a listing after it disappears; save the URL or a screen recording if the platform allows it. If the venue refuses entry, ask for a written reason. A note stating that the barcode was invalid, already used, canceled, restricted or not found is more useful than a general statement that you were turned away.

Do not buy a second ticket, accept an off-platform replacement or send extra money to the seller until support explains whether that action affects the buyer guarantee. If you must purchase another ticket to attend, preserve both receipts and ask the original platform in writing whether it will consider the additional cost; do not assume it will.
Identify the failure before choosing a remedy
The event itself was canceled
A canceled event is different from a ticket problem. Check the organizer, original issuer and resale marketplace notices for the event status and whether a new date has been announced. Ticketmaster says that, for events it handles, a canceled-event refund normally goes to the original payment method after the organizer sends the funds and that no action is required in the ordinary direct-purchase process. Its help guidance also warns that different rules apply to resold or transferred tickets, so follow the order-specific email rather than assuming the direct-purchase procedure applies.
StubHub UK’s FanProtect terms state that a canceled, non-rescheduled event receives a full refund under that guarantee. Read the terms attached to your order, because a postponed or materially changed event can be handled differently from a cancellation, and the country of purchase can change the process.

The ticket was never delivered
Check the delivery method first. A mobile transfer may arrive in a separate issuer account, while an electronic ticket may require a download or app login. Verify the email address, phone number and account used at checkout, but do not repeatedly alter delivery details after opening a claim without asking support.
Ticketmaster UK’s Ticket Exchange policy tells buyers to contact its Ticket Exchange Help Portal if tickets have not arrived five days before the event, or five days before departure when travel is earlier. Escalate before that point if the promised deadline has already passed. The same policy says buyer-caused failures—such as incorrect delivery information or failure to download a ticket—can remove refund eligibility, so document that your details were correct and that you followed the stated download steps.
The ticket was wrong, fake or invalid
Compare the delivered ticket with the listing and confirmation: event date, venue, section, row, seat, ticket type, age restriction and any “restricted view” or transfer condition. Ticketmaster’s help guidance says the only way it can authenticate tickets is when they are bought directly from Ticketmaster or the venue box office; it cannot verify third-party tickets. That warning does not by itself decide a marketplace claim, but it explains why the venue or issuer may be unable to validate a resale barcode in advance.

You were denied entry
Ask the gate staff for the precise reason, time, entrance and any issuer or incident reference. If the ticket showed as already used, request that the venue record the scan result. Photograph the ticket screen and your location, and keep evidence of the event time. Open the marketplace’s guarantee claim immediately, describing what happened and requesting either valid replacement tickets (if entry is still possible) or the promised refund. A verbal complaint weeks later is harder to prove than a case opened from the venue.
How to work with the resale platform
- Use the official account. Sign in to the account that placed the order and select the order’s help or contact option. Avoid links sent by an unknown seller.
- Describe the failure in factual terms. Include the order number, event, scheduled start, delivery promise, what you received and the exact remedy requested.
- Attach concise evidence. Include the confirmation, listing, delivery messages and venue record. Keep original files in case a later reviewer needs metadata.
- Ask about deadlines and next steps. Request a written confirmation of the claim deadline, whether you should attend the venue, and whether buying a replacement would affect eligibility.
- Escalate once, clearly. If the first reply is automated or incomplete, reply in the same case with the missing facts and ask for a supervisor or formal guarantee review. Keep a timeline of dates, names and promises.
Never send a password, one-time authentication code or full payment-card number to a seller. A legitimate platform can identify the order without those secrets.
Refunds, replacements and event changes

When a platform offers a choice, compare the practical value of a replacement with a refund. A replacement is useful only if it arrives through a verifiable transfer and still permits entry; a refund may be safer when the event’s authenticity or restrictions remain uncertain.

Using a credit-card dispute in the United States
For US credit-card purchases, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says a billing error can include a charge for goods or services that were not received or were not delivered as agreed. This is a federal consumer-credit process, not a guarantee that every ticket dispute will be decided for you.
- Send written notice to the card issuer’s billing-error address—not merely the address used for ordinary customer service—within 60 days after the statement showing the charge was sent to you.
- Identify the merchant, transaction date and amount, explain that the ticket was canceled, never delivered or rejected, and state the amount you dispute.
- Attach the order, your platform case, cancellation or venue evidence and any promised remedy. Keep copies and proof of delivery.
- Pay all undisputed amounts and continue making required payments while the issuer investigates. Do not withhold the entire statement balance unless your issuer’s instructions and applicable law clearly permit it.
The CFPB guidance is US-specific. Debit cards, bank transfers, digital wallets and cards issued in other countries use different rules and deadlines. Ask your issuer which dispute category and documentation it requires, and continue pursuing the platform claim in parallel.
Complaints and escalation in the United Kingdom
Citizens Advice warns that resale buyers can encounter fake tickets, refusal of entry and restrictions that cancel resold tickets, with weaker refund rights than a direct purchase. Its 2018 guidance recommends checking the seller’s identity, ticket restrictions and terms and paying by card where possible. It also notes that buyer fees are usually around 10% of face value and resale fees commonly run about 10% to 15%; those are typical figures from that guidance, not a universal cap.

If a UK business does not resolve your complaint, Citizens Advice can explain the relevant route and help you report potentially misleading information or unfair practices to Trading Standards. A private social-media or auction seller may offer little contractual protection, so preserve the seller’s profile, messages, payment details and any identity information. Suspected fraud should be reported through the appropriate national service and to your payment provider.
Recent enforcement shows why the all-in price matters. The Competition and Markets Authority said in 2026 that more than £590,000 had been repaid to over 50,000 customers and that StubHub UK was fined close to £900,000 over mandatory fees added late in checkout. In a separate 2026 matter, the Federal Trade Commission announced a $10 million settlement alleging that StubHub did not clearly disclose mandatory fees upfront. These actions concern fee transparency and do not automatically decide an individual invalid-ticket claim, but your screenshots of the checkout total can support a complaint.
If you must buy a replacement ticket
Do not choose solely by the headline price. Before paying, compare the following facts for the replacement platform or official exchange:

Use an official issuer or venue box office when available. If you use a secondary marketplace, pay with a method that provides a documented dispute process, keep communication on-platform and verify the transfer in the issuer’s app before traveling.
Common mistakes that weaken a claim
- Waiting until after the event to report a missing transfer when the platform required pre-event notice.
- Deleting the listing, emails or chat because the seller says a new ticket is coming.
- Arguing that a ticket is “fake” without recording the venue’s actual rejection reason.
- Accepting a replacement with a different date, section or restriction without written agreement.
- Assuming a canceled, postponed and rescheduled event have identical refund rules.
- Filing a card dispute without first documenting the merchant complaint or without meeting the issuer’s written-notice deadline.
- Disputing a full statement balance instead of paying amounts that are not related to the ticket.
What determines your legal or contractual right
No single worldwide rule guarantees a refund for every resale-ticket failure. The result can change with your country or state, the event organizer, the original issuer, the resale platform’s buyer guarantee, the seller’s status as a business or private individual, the event’s cancellation or postponement status, venue restrictions and your payment method. Consumer guidance from Citizens Advice is primarily for England and Wales, while the CFPB billing-error guidance applies to US credit cards. Treat platform terms and order-specific emails as controlling for the contractual remedy, and obtain local advice if the amount is substantial or fraud is suspected.
