First identify which symptom you have: a PS5 with no power or an unusual power indicator, a powered console that shows no picture, or a console that starts but cannot get online. Those are different faults with different checks. Note any indicator behavior (brief light, blinking, or going dark) and write down the complete error code before changing settings. Then follow the matching branch below.
Choose the right troubleshooting branch
A console that will not power up is dependent on the wall outlet, power cable, and the PS5 itself. A console that displays a network error is already receiving power, so the likely dependencies include the router, modem, Wi-Fi path, internet provider, or PlayStation Network (PSN). A blank screen sits between those cases: the PS5 may be running even though the television receives no usable video signal.

If the PS5 won’t turn on
1. Check the basic power path
- Confirm the wall outlet is working by testing it with another device you know is operational.
- Push the PS5 power cable firmly into the console and the outlet. Check for visible damage; do not use a damaged cable.
- Press the console’s power button once and watch the indicator. Record whether it lights briefly, blinks, stays lit, or goes dark. This behavior determines which PlayStation indicator instructions apply.
- Disconnect the PS5 from power for three minutes, reconnect it, and try again when the indicator guide’s power-off behavior applies. This is a specific power-cycle instruction, not a universal repair for every hardware fault.
If the console remains completely unresponsive after these checks, use PlayStation’s issue-specific power diagnostic and Repairs route. Persistent no-power faults should be evaluated through that official process rather than by opening the console or replacing parts based on a guess.
2. Separate no power from no picture
If the indicator shows that the PS5 starts but the television stays black, treat this as a display-output problem rather than assuming the console is dead. Verify that the television is on the correct HDMI input and that the HDMI cable is seated at both ends. If you can, test a different HDMI input or a known-good cable. These checks establish whether the display path is involved; they do not prove which individual component has failed.

PlayStation’s Safe Mode includes Change Video Output options specifically intended to help troubleshoot a blank screen. Use that route when the console appears powered but produces no image.
3. Handle an abnormal startup or SU-101337-5
For the startup behavior covered by PlayStation’s guidance, including error SU-101337-5, unplug the PS5 for five minutes and then try starting it again. If the abnormal startup continues, follow the official Safe Mode system-software instructions. If Safe Mode will not start or the problem remains after the prescribed recovery, the console may need repair.
How to start PS5 Safe Mode safely
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is on, press and hold the power button until it shuts down.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. A wireless connection is not used for this step.
- Press the controller’s PS button and follow the Safe Mode menu instructions.
Safe Mode is a recovery environment, not a guaranteed fix. The available choices have different effects. Changing video output is aimed at a blank-screen symptom, while system-software update or reinstall actions address software-startup problems. Read the description of the selected option on the screen before confirming it.

“Some Safe Mode options will result in the loss of data.” Back up saved data where possible before selecting a reset or system-software reinstallation. Do not jump directly to a factory reset simply because the console failed to start once; first complete the power, indicator, display, and less-destructive Safe Mode checks.
If the PS5 won’t connect to the internet
1. Capture the exact error and check PSN status
Open the PS5 network test or error screen and record the full code, including every hyphen and digit. Then check the PlayStation Network status page for an outage or scheduled maintenance. A service interruption can produce a connection failure even when your console and home network are working normally.
For WS-116414-7, PlayStation’s guidance is to check service status, restart the console, restart the router after waiting five minutes, and try again later if the service is busy or unavailable. Do not assume that this code proves the PS5’s network hardware is defective.

2. Restart the console, then run a wired comparison
- Power off the PS5 normally and start it again.
- If available, connect the console temporarily to the router with an Ethernet cable you already own.
- Run the PS5’s internet connection test over Ethernet.
If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi fails, the comparison points toward the wireless link, signal conditions, or Wi-Fi configuration. It does not identify a precise failed component, and a successful wired test does not by itself prove that the router’s wireless hardware is faulty. If both wired and wireless tests fail, continue with service-status and router/modem checks.

3. Improve the Wi-Fi path
- Move the PS5 closer to the router for a test.
- Remove substantial obstructions between the console and router where practical.
- Temporarily reduce nearby sources of wireless interference and test again.
These are low-cost diagnostic changes. If moving the console changes the result, placement or radio conditions are contributing to the failure, even though the test does not quantify the effect or identify one specific source.
4. Restart the modem and router correctly
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Leave both devices powered off for at least five minutes, as specified in the PlayStation guidance for the cited network error.
- Turn the modem back on and wait for it to finish connecting to the ISP.
- Turn the router back on, wait for its normal status lights, and retry the PS5 connection test.
If your home uses a combined modem/router, power-cycle that single device and wait the full interval. Check the router manufacturer’s firmware instructions or contact your ISP if the device reports an update, authentication failure, or service problem.

5. Reconfigure the PS5 network settings
On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings and select the option to set up the internet connection again. Select your Wi-Fi network and re-enter its password, or choose the wired connection when an Ethernet cable is attached. Re-running setup can correct a saved password or configuration mismatch.
Do not treat static IP addresses, custom DNS servers, or port changes as routine first steps. Use advanced settings only when the exact PlayStation error instructions call for them and you understand the requirements of your router, network administrator, or ISP. A change that is harmless on one home network can make another network harder to troubleshoot.
6. Retry when the failure is temporary
If PSN reports an outage or maintenance, wait until service is restored and test again. If the official error guidance says the connection may be temporarily busy, retry later rather than repeatedly changing console settings. Keep the recorded error code so you can return to the matching official article if the problem comes back.

Use the exact error code to narrow the cause
PlayStation publishes separate instructions for startup, power, and network codes. Enter the code exactly as displayed in the official PS5 error-code index and follow that article’s sequence. Codes can represent different conditions: a temporary service-availability problem, a recoverable software state, or a fault that needs repair. Applying instructions for a similar-looking code can send you down the wrong path.

What not to do
- Do not open the PS5 or replace an internal power component before the official diagnostic identifies a hardware issue.
- Do not factory-reset or reinstall system software as a first response; those Safe Mode choices can erase data.
- Do not infer a PSN outage from one failed connection test without checking service status.
- Do not infer a defective Wi-Fi radio solely because Ethernet works; the result only isolates the wireless path for further testing.
- Do not make advanced DNS, static-IP, or port changes unless the exact error guidance and your network support context justify them.
When repair is the right next step
Use PlayStation Repairs when the PS5 remains unresponsive after the outlet, cable, indicator, and documented power-cycle checks; when startup recovery fails; or when Safe Mode cannot start. Repair is also the appropriate boundary when official troubleshooting identifies a possible hardware fault. Keep your error code, indicator observations, and the steps already attempted so the diagnostic process can start with useful information.
For an internet problem, escalate to your ISP or router manufacturer when other devices also cannot reach the internet, the modem reports a line or authentication fault, or router firmware/configuration requires administrator action. Escalate to PlayStation when PSN is available, your home network works on other devices, both connection methods fail on the PS5, and the exact PlayStation error article directs you to support.
